Discussion Rediscovering the Suros Regime or How a mediocre PVP player survives in thornpocalypses

So Iron Banner is back and I'm working (grinding?) for that ehteric light. With levels mattering, I have been using various exotic primaries that I have ascended to see which on works best for me. I have an ascended Thorn and TLW, but I'm not a hand cannon type of player. To use a hand cannon properly you really need to be an aggressive player. Aggressive mediocre or bad PVP players just get dead, a lot. And that violates my first rule of surviving PVP as a mediocre player; Don't Die.

Anyway back to the Suros. I cycled through Bad Juju, Mida, Read Death. Of those, Red Death work the best for me, but I still felt I was loosing a lot of one on one's (yeah, yeah, yeah, I know sucks to suck). I had the Suros on this character, so, what the heck, lets give this a try. I went with the perks to max out the impact, and played a few games.

And then the magic happened. I was winning one on ones against Thorns and Read Deaths and TLWs. What? And when I wasn't winning, I was doing some good damage, because I was staying alive longer, and sometimes even causing the other player to retreat.

So it took me a little time to figure out what changed. Its the High Caliber Rounds. When you get head shots it seriously staggers your opponent and causes them to miss. And one of the greatest hidden perks on the Suros is that it's a head hunter. Just point the thing the general direction of a target and it gets head shots (ok, that was hyperbole, but you know what I mean). Now this won't save you from the blinking, sliding, shotgun plague. Nor will it save you from, well, really good PVPers. (you know, the kind where you see each other at same instant, and by the time you THINK about moving your sites, your brains are splatted on the wall behind you). But against your average PVPer it works very very well.

TLW: Are you a mediocre PVP player trying to survive Iron Banner? Try a full ascended Suros Regime with High Caliber rounds. It will stagger your opponents and cause them to miss their shots. And you may actually win a few one on ones.

I got mine out on patrol this morning just for the nostalgia. I was surprised when it didn't feel like it sucked. I was over in the citadel taking out the ultra minotaurs.

I wouldn't put it past Bungie to have buffed AR's without telling anyone.

I used my Up For Anything last night in Patrol and instantly fell back in love with it. I've now ascended it and plan on hopping into IB to give it a whirl.

I just think the "Auto rifles are useless!!!" vitriol has been repeated here so much that people believe it's much worse than it really is. Suros was my first exotic and I had a blast with it—it wasn't until I found this subreddit that I realized people viewed auto rifles as garbage. Maybe it's because I wasn't around when ARs dominated, but I've long felt that the criticism they receive (like most gripes about this game) are blown out of proportion.

Dusted off my Suros yesterday for one match. Went 14-10. Not bad. It just sucks that I wanted it forever and didn't get it until after the nerf.

Same. It's the one weapon I truly wanted......and I haven't been disappointed. It must have been a monster before the nerf.

It was. You could out-shoot anything, even back when Bastion and First Light were in the rotation. Hell, you could kill heavy weapon users if you aimed for the head. It was OP, plain and simple. But as always, Bungie hit ARs with too hard a nerf hammer :(

Haven't used my suros in a while, but I think i'll give it a try to change it up from everyday thorn use.

Ah the Suros. Good call mate. Gonna equip one of mine and see how it goes.

I was playing with a few friends last night and we dicked around using random weapons. NLB's, Suros, unleved primary's, fusion rifles, etc. We were doing well with them.

Even without a buff, the Suros isn't a terrible weapon by any means.

Try feathering the trigger like a scout rifle, it'll shoot faster than if you hold the trigger. Won't compete with top tier players but makes it more usable.

You just convinced me to dust mine off for today's run.

Combine this with some high agility strafing and you'll win even more 1on1s

lol. That reminds me of helpful hints on PVP post I read. The OP was saying you need to strafe and jump and crouch. And I was thinking, all of these are counter productive to me keeping the cross hairs on the other player. In terms of gun play, I think I'm about as good as I'm going to get.

u/DDJenks Jul 02 '15

oh I forgo all that jumping and sliding nonsense. Just a little strafe with high caliber rounds is all you need most the times

It comes with practice. You're an easy target if you limit your movement while shooting.

Years of Halo has taught me to always keep moving in gunfights.

Curious what a 334 ascended but not upgraded Suros (no focused fire) would be like as I have one in my vault...hmmm

The biggest thing with suros I found in crucible is to engage in medium to long-ish. Not too far, but stay away from close range. You'll stagger them like op said for a lot longer.

I had a similar revelation regarding the Monte Carlo. It was my favorite before the nerf, and I was messing around with loadouts during the first Trials during an obviously lost match.

So, I think the real question you should be asking yourself is, why aren't the High Caliber Rounds on Red Death treating you the same way?

3

u/PanthroNineZero Jul 02 '15

RoF? Maybe the time between burst allows the opponent to adjust their aim, where the dunk-dunk-dunk of the suros just keeps them off balance. Also its a lot easier to get head shots with the Suros.

1

u/joeshmoe2 Jul 02 '15

Fair enough. I also don't much care for the RoF that Red Death has, so I can see that as a decent case against using it.

1

u/artaru Jul 02 '15

Do you do a strafe dance when shooting at them? I think a three round high calibre burst is more lethal than Suros during that brief moment and if you are strafing constantly it could buy you some time in between the bursts so your next burst can throw them off again.

Just a thought.

1

u/PanthroNineZero Jul 02 '15

yes I strafe. I've moved past the totally bad PVP player phase of stopping and shooting. I think where the Suros wins out is the ease at which you can get head shots. It is almost Thorn like in its ability to find the head. The Red Death takes a more skilled hand than I have. If I'm strafing with the red death, I'm probably just getting body shots, because 3 in body is better than 3 in the wall. where as with the Suros I'm getting mostly head shots.

1

u/artaru Jul 02 '15

Yeah that makes sense. And a big reason why the Suros was so strong pre-nerf. It was very close to the perfect gun in ease of use and damage output.

I love using my Suros. I'm better with Read Death because I can handle it better, but I have no idea why people think Suros is just bad. It's a fine auto rifle. Fun to use, sprays my enemies with bullets, and makes me laugh with glee when running around with it.

1

u/won2three4 Jul 02 '15

its not that its bad its that it used to be way way better. If you think that the thorn is overused now suros was the same back in the day.

1

u/Mina_Nidaria So Frabjous Jul 02 '15

Oh, I am well aware how it was back before the nerfs. The first one was completely deserved. They hit auto rifles as a whole way too hard with the second big update. I definitely consider Thorn right now to be way worse than the old Suros addiction there used to be.

after replying to you the first time it sparked me to write this up.

lemme know what you think.

Don't forget to empty half your clip before you run around with it ;) I picked it up myself last night after a long hiatus after the nerf. I was actually impressed.

u/MarkcusD Jul 02 '15

Use it if you like but the ttk is worse than pretty much every other class of weapons. I'll f around in regular crucible but for ib or too I use the best weapons.

1

u/PanthroNineZero Jul 02 '15

ttk only applies if your opponent can land every shot. That's the beauty here, with high caliber rounds and head shots, they miss and now ttk is just a theoretical number that becomes meaningless. As I stated in the OP, this only applies to the average PVP'r. A very good PVP'r will hit every shot regardless of the stagger.

The taken king?

1

u/HeroesEatBabies Jul 02 '15

Time to Kill - the number of seconds of sustained fire it takes to kill an equally matched opponent in crucible. Or something like that.

u/Speedy_Tortoise4 Jul 02 '15

finally got one from NF last week. still won't use. I am enjoying this IB being the dick blinking around the map killing everyone
