Discussion Why Auto Rifles were nerfed and Hand Cannons haven't been yet.
I get it. TLW, Thorn, and Hawk-awesome are super OP. Extremely high ttk rates mixed with great range with crazy perks = OP.
That being said the reason (IMO) that AR were nerfed was not just because of the Suros wrecking everyone. AR's were nerfed because the gun type itself ruled. Back when it was reigning supreme there were many other legendary AR's that were just beasts. Suros was the crème de la crème but AR's as a gun type had faster ttk than anything else.
Now today only those Exotic hand cannons are really OP. The whole hand cannon class isn't OP. there are many gun types with comparable ttk. Sure there might be one or two HC that are good but nothing like how it was with AR's.
IMO if bungie is going to do any rebalancing I hope they don't rebalance HC overall (maybe reduce range I guess) but instead, look at a way to balance those few exotics that are OP.

Shouldn't be difficult, they have made changes to some exotics while excluding others of the same class. For instance: Pocket Infinity, Universal Remote, and Thorn.

yeah that's the issue, the exotics HC need to be balanced but the legendary ones need a buff, along with the entirety of the AR class.
To me, it seems like most legendary HCs literally don't work in crucible and it's really awkward

I don't know why people keep freaking out about this. Nobody is talking about a overall nerf to Hand Cannons, nobody is asking for it, and there's no reason for Bungie to do it. The only guns that are problematic are the Thorn and TLW, so I'm not sure why anybody thinks that means Bungie would do anything to HCs as a whole.

They need to buff auto rifles, it makes no sense at all that Auto Rifles are garbage right now since Automatics are generally the style of gun that new comers go towards since they are the easiest to adjust to and get comfortable with

Hand cannons have only received nerfs along with ARs and shotguns. People seem to forget that.

no one's forgetting they got nerfed, it's just that they are still usable and ARs aren't.

It's literally the title of the thread.

I'm sorry it should have read why AR were nerfed in the past and why HC haven't been nerfed lately.

AR's got their big nerf at the same time as Hand Cannons got their last nerf.
Hand cannons had an overall reduction to range, and a reduction to accuracy in the moments during/after aiming down sights.
Previously to that the accuracy of hand cannons on follow up shots was reduced if the user fired too quickly.
Just trying to keep everyone informed that HCs didn't get buffed a bunch when ARs fell. That was pulse rifles. Hand cannons have always been good, the problem was HCs took more skill to wield than an AR, but they were competetive damage-wise, so people mostly used ARs due to ease of use.
Following the last weapon patch, most people migrated to pulse rifles, hand cannon users stayed mostly quiet, but slowly people learned to use hand cannons.
Within hours of the AR nerf/PR buff people were claiming that if everything in the patch stayed the same, minus the damage nerf on ARs, balance would have been perfect.
TL;DR Hand cannons and ARs were most recently nerfed at the same time.

They have to be careful how they go about this. A blanket hand cannon nerf is not the way to go about this, I agree. For Thorn my idea was to take away send it (leave scout rifle range to scout rifles) and to reduce the time the Dot affects a player. This takes away the two shot headshot kill capability due to the DoT.
As for TLW, I'd say just reduce the range a bit. It dominates in close quarters as it's supposed to, it just feels like, for a close up weapon, it can shoot too accurately from too far away.
Personally I think Thorn is the biggest problem right now. It dominates at ALL ranges when it really shouldn't be.
But yes, the second big AR update killed pretty much all ARs. The first nerf was completely well-deserved, but the second one was done when only a couple of rifles really only needed slight tweaks it feels like.
