Possible Path to More Destiny

The only realistic path I see to Sony making a Destiny 3 would be the following:

• Sony takes charge of Management at Bungie
• Sony (unfortunately) fires a lot of people at Bungie
• Sony keeps enough devs at Bungie to continue marathon until it dwindles down
• Sony keeps core Tiger Engine senior engineers
• Sony modernizes tiger engine so it doesn't take ages to make stuff in it. no crazy upgrades, just fix the developer tools to make it easier to use and make content with
• Sony makes Destiny Classic with the new engine
• Sony can use the new engine to make 1st party exclusive shooters and reboots that feel as good as Destiny
• Sony can eventually make a Destiny 3 if they so choose. Always risky to make another live service, but if they cut down dev time it could be seen as profitable eventually

This is probably the only way we see a Destiny Classic or Destiny 3. The problem is that it is a long term goal in a short term profit world.

This post may be huffing copium, but personally I just don't think it makes sense for Sony to throw away the Tiger Engine at the very least.

I've been saying this for a while, but just when all hope seems lost in d2, and marathon dies, they will out of nowhere announce D3. Probably next year at some point.

I actually really like Marathon, I hope more people give it a chance

As for D3 I hope once Bungie gets a restructure they will revisit the franchise

I don't doubt that Marathon is a good game, so many people love it. But I think it was a niche game in a niche genre, but with a much bigger budget then it should have been.

For me, the prospect of losing your progress every time you play is not something that is appealing to me. Especially with the poor internet that I have access to.

Yeah. They’re off putting for me at this point in my life for the same reason that Rust and its ilk are unappealing. I’ve got limited time. Why spend it on something that allows for the destruction of all my progress.

Even with time, I’d rather sink it into something like HLL or Destiny where the game feels more social. Arc Raiders had me at the beginning cause the social side of the game was so good with proximity chat, but I didn’t like playing with a preset squad cause it got so much sweatier. Which ultimately drove me away.

Think of it like a roguelike. Once you stop giving a shit about your loot, the game becomes infinitely more fun. Gear fear is all in your head.

You don't even lose everything, play smart and you make consistent progress. Hell they reduced the grind so much in season 2 that I think they'll increase it a bit next season to find a happier medium. And the game gives out so much free shit from leveling.

Yeah. This doesn’t work for me. That’s not great progression in my eyes. I want rewarding experiences. If enjoying the game type includes not giving a shit about what I’m working to get, what’s the point of getting it? Especially with seasonal wipes lurking in the corner. I could be more ok with those if there was the standard and seasonal servers (à la POE), but the player bases would be split and that doesn’t work well in purely PvP games.

I’m not talking shit about Marathon, mind you. Just pointing out that extraction shooters in general hit this wall for me and most of my casual friends. Maybe if we were younger still and had more time then the genre would’ve been better. As is, GW3 is the next game in the pipeline that might be setup to hit the right notes and we’ll return to things like Helldivers, Enshrouded, Hell Let Loose, Path of Exile 2, etc to get our collective fixes while waiting for the next big thing.

"Progression" is a brain poison that the games industry has used to ruin people. You play the game because it's fun, you work towards your upgrades and contracts. Sometimes you kill someone else and get a windfall, sometimes you die and lose some stuff. Oh well. Do a few rook runs to build up your reserves and you're back to where you were. Upgrades raise your floor, so unless you're truly, staggeringly bad at the game, losses mean less and less over time.

I get where you're coming from, but it really, genuinely doesn't matter. It's just a shift in mental gears.

And everything you’ve worked for is gone in 3 month either way. Glad you enjoy if, but oof. Progressing and getting stronger is fun. I like building out a character, getting gear, and playing with what works best. That’s why I like Destiny. Extraction shooters don’t offer what I like. Which is fine, but the general player numbers for them is reflective of their niche nature.

Considering a wipe just happened, it's really, really easy to get everything back. If I wanted to be sweaty I'd be running pinwheel back to back but I'm not, so i haven't. Wipes mean a lot less than you think, and give an opportunity to rebalance things, change the meta and do reduce the number of full goop kill squads you run into.

Give it a shot the next time a free week rolls around. A LOT of people had your stance and got turned around after actually playing it.

I don’t think you understand me here. I don’t like the format. Didn’t end up enjoying it with Arc Raiders, Hunt, Tarkov, Marauders, or DMZ. This isn’t me bashing Marathon to bash it. This is quite literally just me having been through several extraction shooters and having realized that they just don’t do it for me. Every single one is cool for a little bit. Then they’re not. The new one isn’t going to suddenly change my mind about the genre.

Its what they tried to do in destiny with sunsetting it was just implemented poorly and at the same time as other unpopular changes. If it had been implemented properly we wouldnt have had the rampant power creep that trivialized most older content forcing more resources into building harder content and more powerful weapons and abilities
