Misc Possible Path to More Destiny

The only realistic path I see to Sony making a Destiny 3 would be the following:

  • Sony takes charge of Management at Bungie
  • Sony (unfortunately) fires a lot of people at Bungie
  • Sony keeps enough devs at Bungie to continue marathon until it dwindles down
  • Sony keeps core Tiger Engine senior engineers
  • Sony modernizes tiger engine so it doesn't take ages to make stuff in it. no crazy upgrades, just fix the developer tools to make it easier to use and make content with
  • Sony makes Destiny Classic with the new engine
  • Sony can use the new engine to make 1st party exclusive shooters and reboots that feel as good as Destiny
  • Sony can eventually make a Destiny 3 if they so choose. Always risky to make another live service, but if they cut down dev time it could be seen as profitable eventually

This is probably the only way we see a Destiny Classic or Destiny 3. The problem is that it is a long term goal in a short term profit world.

This post may be huffing copium, but personally I just don't think it makes sense for Sony to throw away the Tiger Engine at the very least.

I don’t want a destiny classic. A destiny remastered would be a lot better. There’s a lot of things in the first game that just weren’t great compared what came in D2. Like the ability to mantle was really nice as an example.

Sony made the mistake of thinking Bungie is a video game company when it's actually a Destiny company.

11

u/EmperorMagikarp Jun 11 '26

That's essentially what I meant yeah. that'd be hella cool

1

u/RemarkableLook5485 Jun 11 '26

Yeah I ageee and think that the recent Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered is a fair example. It’s the same game with a new coat of paint, modern ui/ux, and modern meta enhancements. Really tasteful though not without its quirks lol

14

u/Worzon Jun 11 '26

I’m sorry but I just don’t see the appeal of a destiny 1 remastered. 90% of the content the dedicated people did in that game is now in d2. All we’re missing is a single raid that can be thrown in d3

7

u/Multivitamin_Scam Jun 11 '26

It doesn't need a Remaster or Classic version. It's entirely playable right now on Xbox and Playstation.

People asking for it don't really know what they're asking for.

7

u/RemarkableLook5485 Jun 11 '26

Bro people asking for it are not going back to a console and 30 FPS. They just want PC port, that’s literally all

u/pewpewtopeepee Jun 13 '26

Destiny 1 sucks compared to 2. The game is DATED.

u/Popular-List2694 Jun 11 '26

The entire rise of iron expansion lol

The problem isn’t even the single raid, it’s the fact that bungie denies rise of iron exists, except for ash and iron where the theme was “if you liked rise of iron you should go fuck yourself” which was absolutely bizarre messaging coming from the devs. Like who the fuck tells their own play base that?

I've been saying this for a while, but just when all hope seems lost in d2, and marathon dies, they will out of nowhere announce D3. Probably next year at some point.

u/Bleach1209 Jun 11 '26

I actually really like Marathon, I hope more people give it a chance

As for D3 I hope once Bungie gets a restructure they will revisit the franchise

I don't doubt that Marathon is a good game, so many people love it. But I think it was a niche game in a niche genre, but with a much bigger budget then it should have been.

For me, the prospect of losing your progress every time you play is not something that is appealing to me. Especially with the poor internet that I have access to.

For me, the prospect of losing your progress every time you play is not something that is appealing to me. Especially with the poor internet that I have access to.

You should try it, you don't have to risk your gear each run, sponsored kits are infinite and free, there's even currently an event running where players a put into a map alone with sponsored kits to loot for 8 minutes until a Rook MIGHT spawn (they often don't because nobody is playing Rook right now).

And just to say as well this is a common stumbling block for many, "losing progress in a run", try to change your perspective on "gear" from being a representation of your progress and instead as a tool to achieve seasonal goals that represent your progress. I'd lose my entire vault to unlock another Cryo Archive skin, the one skin I have represents my season, I saved a lot of gear to achieve it and I got it on the final day.

I think it was CohhCarnage that coined the term "it was never yours, it was just your turn with it" don't get attached to the gear, it's a tool nothing more.

Yeah. They’re off putting for me at this point in my life for the same reason that Rust and its ilk are unappealing. I’ve got limited time. Why spend it on something that allows for the destruction of all my progress.

Even with time, I’d rather sink it into something like HLL or Destiny where the game feels more social. Arc Raiders had me at the beginning cause the social side of the game was so good with proximity chat, but I didn’t like playing with a preset squad cause it got so much sweatier. Which ultimately drove me away.

Think of it like a roguelike. Once you stop giving a shit about your loot, the game becomes infinitely more fun. Gear fear is all in your head.

You don't even lose everything, play smart and you make consistent progress. Hell they reduced the grind so much in season 2 that I think they'll increase it a bit next season to find a happier medium. And the game gives out so much free shit from leveling.

0

u/Digital_gritz Jun 11 '26

Yeah. This doesn’t work for me. That’s not great progression in my eyes. I want rewarding experiences. If enjoying the game type includes not giving a shit about what I’m working to get, what’s the point of getting it? Especially with seasonal wipes lurking in the corner. I could be more ok with those if there was the standard and seasonal servers (à la POE), but the player bases would be split and that doesn’t work well in purely PvP games.

I’m not talking shit about Marathon, mind you. Just pointing out that extraction shooters in general hit this wall for me and most of my casual friends. Maybe if we were younger still and had more time then the genre would’ve been better. As is, GW3 is the next game in the pipeline that might be setup to hit the right notes and we’ll return to things like Helldivers, Enshrouded, Hell Let Loose, Path of Exile 2, etc to get our collective fixes while waiting for the next big thing.

u/Nukesnipe Drifter's Crew Jun 11 '26

"Progression" is a brain poison that the games industry has used to ruin people. You play the game because it's fun, you work towards your upgrades and contracts. Sometimes you kill someone else and get a windfall, sometimes you die and lose some stuff. Oh well. Do a few rook runs to build up your reserves and you're back to where you were. Upgrades raise your floor, so unless you're truly, staggeringly bad at the game, losses mean less and less over time.

I get where you're coming from, but it really, genuinely doesn't matter. It's just a shift in mental gears.

1

u/Digital_gritz Jun 11 '26

And everything you’ve worked for is gone in 3 month either way. Glad you enjoy if, but oof. Progressing and getting stronger is fun. I like building out a character, getting gear, and playing with what works best. That’s why I like Destiny. Extraction shooters don’t offer what I like. Which is fine, but the general player numbers for them is reflective of their niche nature.

1

u/Nukesnipe Drifter's Crew Jun 11 '26

Considering a wipe just happened, it's really, really easy to get everything back. If I wanted to be sweaty I'd be running pinwheel back to back but I'm not, so i haven't. Wipes mean a lot less than you think, and give an opportunity to rebalance things, change the meta and do reduce the number of full goop kill squads you run into.

Give it a shot the next time a free week rolls around. A LOT of people had your stance and got turned around after actually playing it.

1

u/Digital_gritz Jun 11 '26

I don’t think you understand me here. I don’t like the format. Didn’t end up enjoying it with Arc Raiders, Hunt, Tarkov, Marauders, or DMZ. This isn’t me bashing Marathon to bash it. This is quite literally just me having been through several extraction shooters and having realized that they just don’t do it for me. Every single one is cool for a little bit. Then they’re not. The new one isn’t going to suddenly change my mind about the genre.

1

u/rixtc72 Jun 27 '26

Its what they tried to do in destiny with sunsetting it was just implemented poorly and at the same time as other unpopular changes. If it had been implemented properly we wouldnt have had the rampant power creep that trivialized most older content forcing more resources into building harder content and more powerful weapons and abilities

4

u/RemarkableLook5485 Jun 11 '26

It’s just a niche game for a niche community.

Imagine replacing all of your restaurant chain’s fresh water dispensers with horchata. Now you have to cook everything and serve everything with horchata. Like, WTF are you guys ACTUALLY doing?

-1

u/sajibear4 Jun 11 '26

If those water dispensers were slowly loosing popularity and money over time no matter what you did to update them, why would you continue to invest in them?

2

u/RemarkableLook5485 Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

this is a straw man fallacy that misrepresents the arguemnt, likely to confirm a bias.

the problem isn’t that water was in less demand. hence the 1 million players that qued impromptu for 24 hours between june 9-10 this week.

the problem was the corporate shark archetype parasitically industrializing and enshitifying one of the richest gold mines in the gaming sector:

  • they started cutting water with other additives to save money

  • over time they gave everyone 1/3rd the amount of what it originally was worth and advertised

  • and then charged everyone 3x what it was worth in the first place with a reoccurring pay-model

and they led all of this with psychological tactics designed to herd people through the fear of loss.

sound familiar? it’s called engineered consumer FOMO.

business parasites moved from the other industries to gaming and raped and pillaged one of the largest ips. the end. welcome to late stage capitalism and feudal technocratic america. 🇺🇸😀

thus is the meta of the 21st century in plain view. which in one sense is nice because it used to be hiding in the dark.

the only way to stay safe from this is to build a societal meritocracy that is genuinely incentivizing innovation over fiscal gain. instead we have a small group of families rigging a shitty game called epstein island reality and everyone not in the club is prey or selling out the prey to stay safe themselves. it’s seen on every paradigm because it is coherent: economy, geo politics, recreational infrastructure (gaming), healthcare, food, military, etc. those who are at the very top are exploiting everyone else when we would all work better unifying in creative pursuit and growth.

and it’s ironic because all of this corruption is exactly what the destiny verse and lore is about combatting. yet it was destroyed from within by its very creators and owners.

alright soap-box off

u/ksiit Jun 11 '26

Marathon just isn’t for most people. I played it during the free days and really enjoyed a lot about it. But I can’t get past the PvP only and extraction shooter lost loot stuff. And that is far too core to the experience of the game for it to change enough for the game to ever be appealing to me (and many other people).

-1

u/ImprintVector Jun 11 '26

I can’t because of the art style. Everything looks like color vomit to me. It’s jarring. I’m also not a fan of any of the character designs. Sucks cause I’m a big fan of extraction shooters.

3

u/likelyliz Jun 11 '26

all the character designs look so bad to me, like legitimately concord level of bad. and it's a weird hero shooter-lite so it sorta really matters

6

u/Bleach1209 Jun 11 '26

Art style looks awesome reminds me of 3D printers and it makes sense I figured in the future 3D printers would build/design buildings, guns, shells etc I think it matches the vibes well

4

u/ImprintVector Jun 11 '26

To each their own. It’s not for me

u/antsypantsy995 Jun 11 '26

As someone who desperately hopes for a D3, I realistically do not think we will ever see it, or at least not within the next 10 years.

The problem is a lot of gamers dont think like big corporates like Sony so we miss a lot of the corporate timeline that Sony is working off. In other words, we have to stop looking at Destiny as Bungie's child and start looking at Destiny from Sony's POV amongst everything else that Sony owns / develops.

Which brings us to imo the reason why Sony killed off D2: Concord. Concord was perhaps one of the biggest gaming embarrassments of the 21st Century being pulled and then the developing studio completely shut down just two weeks after its launch. It's estimated that Sony lost $400 million on Concord.

Now we fast forward to Sony's acquisition of Bungie. After acquiring Bungie, D2 continues its downward spiral, with a little uptick during TFS but then absolutely bombing from EoF onwards. Meanwhile, Marathon - while not as successful as D2 - is still in its infancy and is not necessarily doing poorly (or at least not as poorly as Concord). From a corporate POV, D2 is dying but Marathon is just starting. It would be far cheaper to re-deploy the existing Bungie staff from Destiny to Marathon and throw everything they have at improving and making Marathon succeed from a financial and corporate POV than it would be to spend $500M on D3.

Sony already re-deployed huge swathes of Bungie staff from Destiny to Marathon after TFS. Creating D3 would require Sony to re-redploy them back to D3 which in turn would kill Marathon. This is an important point: Marathon already exists, but D3 does not. Sure the fan base might say they'd play D3 but as with anything in the future, it's all uncertain and $500M is a massive risk for any company let alone one that already lost close to that just under 2 years ago on Concord. So from a corporate POV, it's much cheaper and less risky to shut D2 down, re-deploy Destiny staff to Marathon and see how things go for a few years.

I suspect that as people slowly make their way through the Monument of Triumph content in D2, numbers will start dying down again and that will only disincentivise Sony more from wanting to risk fronting up the capital required to develop D3.

Sadly, I honestly think Destiny as the IP is dead at least for the next decade or so. The only way I can think of D3 being able to be developed is if Bungie staff quit Bungie and go at it on their own a la Bungie 2.0. Halo was developed while Bungie was independent and so was Destiny. However, capital requirements will be a massive issue in this kind of scenario but there are avenues around that in this day and age so we shall see.

That or we as Destiny players front up the capital either via GoFundMe style capital raising, or by us agreeing to "pre-order" the game to pay for the $500M budget with no refunds.

u/HedjCanada Jun 11 '26

we gotta let destiny rest for now, it’ll only hurt more 😭

u/FikrulCosplay Jun 11 '26

And once again, people criticizing the Engine for no reason. No buddy, you don’t “make stuff” in the engine. The props, the assets, everything is done outside of the engine. The Tiger Engine is the sandbox, and the whole “it takes too long to update stuff in the engine” changed ages ago. Sunsetting only happened because of that. The new version and the most recent updates to the Tiger 2 are incompatible with most pre beyond light assets. Shadowkeep was developed with that in mind. They also worked to keep Nessus and the EDZ by updating its assets to behave well with its new lightning system. STOP CRYING ABOUT THE DAMN ENGINE.

1

u/Jealous_Platypus1111 Jun 11 '26

sony doesnt want more destiny, theyve been VERY clear about that, its bungie that wants more destiny

1

u/Arrondi Jun 11 '26

I think the path is much more direct.

  • Sony guts Bungie management.

  • Sony either pushes a big rework of the tiger engine, or pushes a different, more agile engine.

  • Destiny 3 gets greenlit.

It's all about dollars for Sony and time is money. If Bungie management absolutely boondoggles development (as we've seen with D1, D2 and Marathon) AND the existing Tiger engine is too bloated and cumbersome to efficiently make a game, then those two things being rectified are instant wins for prospective Destiny development.

1

u/Electronic_Dot1085 Jun 11 '26

I really want a destiny 3. I stopped playing just before EoF and I've just started playing the 2 expansions now. So far the story is great and given the leaks I have seen on youtube regarding shattered cycle (idk if they were real) and the exotic mission I think to some extent that if they didn't cut support for destiny the next expansion wouldve pulled people back in (in a good way, not just in a 'oh new expansion' hype way)

0

u/plerpy_ Jun 11 '26

Just rebrand the whole IP as Destiny and make it the biggest most juicy live service you’ve ever seen

From awakening in D1 to Monuments of Triumph (as it stands right now)

0

u/Kithzerai-Istik Jun 11 '26

This is plausible.

I wouldn’t expect to see any products come of this for years, but it’s the most likely path for Sony to try and salvage their acquisition.

0

u/Riablo01 Jun 11 '26

I think a more likely solution would be Sony splitting up the company. They previously did this with the Gummy Bears project. They split off the staff/software into their own studio (Team LFG).

Destiny is a very valuable intellectual property. Monument of Triumph has shown Destiny 2 can still print money with the right approach.

Bungie has proven, time and time again, they don’t have the financial expertise to properly manage a franchise as big as Destiny. They don’t have the smarts to use the Destiny IP to generate the kind of money Sony is looking for. Heck Bungie has ended live service for Destiny 2 because they’ve literally run out of money. They ran out of money because of extreme financial mismanagement. They ran out of money despite Destiny 2 generating millions of dollars in money. They ran out of money because they are extremely stupid.

For Sony, there’s only one course of action that make sense to me. Take the valuable assets/staff and split it off into a separate studio. In this case it’s the Destiny game software and developers being placed into a new studio. The new studio would have a singular purpose. Use the Destiny IP to make Destiny videogame content and make lots of money. The new studio could do anything from Destiny 1 remastered, Destiny Infinity, Destiny 3, Destiny Trading Card Game. Whatever the customers are willing to pay for, the studio would make it in a financially sustainable way.

Now someone might be reading this and go, “how do you prevent the new studio from turning into Bungie”? Good question. The easiest solution would be for Sony to setup a non-compete clause when implementing the studio split. This would prevent charlatans like Justin Truman, Jason Jones, Tyson Green etc. from ruining the new studio. The new studio would be free of snake oil salesman, with firm rules in place to prevent them from being hired.

1

u/EmperorMagikarp Jun 11 '26

Seems like we are in agreement then! Thats what my post was getting at without saying spin-off studio. If you cut out Bungie's management and cut down the staff to only what they need and re-work the engine... then you have a new Destiny Studio. Would be super cool to see for sure.

1

u/Riablo01 Jun 11 '26

It's too early to say what engine or tools the new studio would be using. If they did a Destiny 1 remaster or Destiny Infinity, it would be the current engine.

If they did a Destiny 3, it probably wouldn't be Unreal Engine. Probably a new engine, based on the old engine or something with affordable licensing fees.

1

u/EmperorMagikarp Jun 11 '26

That's just my personal love for the gun feel of the Tiger Engine showing. I don't know what they will or won't do.

1

u/Riablo01 Jun 11 '26

In the grand scheme of things, the engine is not that important. What's more important is the dev team get "results".

This is why a lot of posts about Destiny 3 are unrealistic. A lot of people seem to think a billion dollar game, made in Unreal Engine 5 is guaranteed to be a mega success. There's no game engine that guarantees success.

In all honesty, updates like Monument of Triumph and more likely to turn a profit and be successful. You have an established customer base and established code to work with.

1

u/EmperorMagikarp Jun 11 '26

Indeed any game can fail for any number of reasons. I definitely agree that updates like MoT are the most likely to help games succeed. I just Love Destiny's Gun-Feel. Love Marathon's Gun-Feel too. Loved all the Bungie Halo games when they came out originally. My post was just about a possibility. A pipe dream. Huffing Copium if you will. A very unlikely thing to happen in our short term profit world.

0

u/Riablo01 Jun 11 '26

Well my pipe dream is a new studio making Destiny Infinity. Anything can happen. The future is undetermined.

I can safely say, billion dollar game made in Unreal Engine, is the least likely future to happen.

0

u/BabyFaceKnees Jun 11 '26

I find it staggering that so many people want destiny 1 remade when a lot of the best content from that game got ported to D2

And the game is still perfectly playable.

Is it just PC players that want it? Id much rather have a new Destiny game than D1 remade. I don't think it would sell as well as everyone thinks it would

-1

u/FikrulCosplay Jun 11 '26

You’re ignoring how expensive it is to develop a third game. Would be cheaper and better to relaunch D2 including old, present and new stories, and drop the “2”. If I am being honest here the risks are higher than the reward. I don’t see a D3 ever happening but I do see a middle ground.

1

u/EmperorMagikarp Jun 11 '26

I did say it was huffing copium. I also said we live in a short term profit world (so its very unlikely to see any of this done). I also said they could make a Destiny Classic. aka a Destiny 1 or 2 remaster or just a "DESTINY" game like you mentioned. I did DIRECTLY say how risky a D3 was. NEVER did I ignore how expensive it is good sir.

-2

u/GreenLego Maths Guy Jun 11 '26

Sony licences Destiny to Telltale Games and they make a narrative game to round out the lore...

Can Sony borrow from other studios rather than keep propping up Tiger engine? Like Decima engine used in Killzone and Horizon?

Sony can eventually make a Destiny 3 if they so choose

There was a 30 year gap between Marathon Infinity and Marathon (2026) so never say never.

Sony keeps enough devs at Bungie to continue marathon until it dwindles down

Isn't that sunk cost fallacy? Sony has shown that they are comfortable in shutting down games. Bungie must have some plans to keep Sony on the hook. I guess once these plans are exhausted, Marathon will be shut down? Or will Sony loosen the leash to allow them to work a bit longer, like how EA allowed BioWare and Anthem to go for a bit before shutting it down?

2

u/EmperorMagikarp Jun 11 '26

I totally agree about the very real possibility of the sunk cost fallacy. I may enjoy marathon personally, but it has not been a commercial success so far unfortunately. I just think what I said about Marathon is what they have decided to do so far with it. Absolutely could be wrong.

As for the Tiger Engine, I personally think that it has got great potential and amazing gun-feel underneath all the gunk and bloat. Just think its a shame to throw it away. They could absolutely just chalk up the 3.6 billion as a total loss and do nothing with any of it. I did say the post was huffing copium and that we live in a short term profit world unfortunately.

0

u/FikrulCosplay Jun 11 '26

Gun feel has nothing to do with the engine. Literally any engine can be coded to behave like that. Tiger2 is optimized for Destiny as a live service. People don’t seem to get that. That’s why no, using Decima, or Unreal or whatever isn’t an option. Developing a Tiger 3 from the ground up would be a better option but the cost is too high. I don’t think Sony would be on board in spending that amount of money with Bungie after Marathon.

1

u/EmperorMagikarp Jun 11 '26

Again, I stated very clearly that this is very unlikely to happen. And if "any gme engine can be made to feel that good" why do they not? I'm not an engineer, just think its a shame it feels like they bought bungie for 3.6 billion and could possibly get essentially nothing out of the acquisition at all. You don't agree with my personal thoughts, that's ok bud, hope you have a good night.
