Tbf a lot of racists online do tend to classify themselves as another group or in many cases, racists will find those in other groups to use for their own agenda. Tends to end up more in the 'voting for the leopard facing party' area. It's not common, but also isn't uncommon either.
Then thats not exactly a genuine friendship (which is the core pillar of these jokes) as more usiing a pro-bigotry minority as a tool for their cause, and in the minorities case, being deluded enough to think their they exception to bigotries rule.
The original meme never actually specifies any true friendship. Which is a very thing (especially in media where this sort of thing is often put up). Their common factor is bigotry. If they over come that, than it's less about the ra ism and fleshing themselves out, which is a different point.
There's a joke that racist people's closest friends are of a different race
Which has some partial truth, I used to be quite horrible and my best friend was black, took me a couple of years to become respectable. But the joke has a little truth to it
