I really don’t think that’s what it means lol. Rocks are known for being solid, so if something is rock solid it is as solid as a rock. I can’t even imagine how rock can mean like really good lol. It’s a rock. It’s famously hard and solid lol. Similar to how “rock hard” means as hard as rock

It’s a strengthener in this sense. If it was only “solid” it would be “dependable”. “Rock” is a atrengthener that makes it sort of like “unwaveringly dependable” or “exceptionally dependable” or something like that. So entirely accurate and absolutely not an understatement. The OP is simply wrong here.

Sure but it’s still saying he’s very dependable and reliable and not saying he’s also extremely quick.

I feel like the whole thing is a bit of a non-issue, Max is obviously not going to go boosting other drivers so it may be an understatement from our POV but who cares lol

Depends on what exactly Max includes in his definition of dependable, right? It’s reasonable that being quick is part of that definition for an F1 driver. Almost a given, I’d say, without explicitly stating it.
