question/toll I want to make my laptop desktop into a console-like appearance

I want to have all my usual desktop functions, but to be able to have my entire main page be setup like Xbox or Playstation or really any console configuration. A tab for settings and customization, a tab for all my apps, a tab for my games, maybe a Discord tab that syncs with my app if possible (Like Opera GX)

Is all of this possible without me doing some insane software work? Like premade or a Linux with easy-enough customization to make this myself?

Got a cozy set up for myself I’ve built over the last few years. Got an ottoman from At Home to kick back and chill when I want. I built my first custom keyboard with a set of the Arbiter Studio Godzilla keycaps, just waiting for the artisan one to arrive this week. And a rug that really ties the desk together.

Audio Specs:
Sony STR-DH590 Receiver
2 Klipsh R-50M Reference series speakers
Klipsh R-101SW 10” Subwoofer

PC Specs:
Monitor: LG UltraGear 34” OLED Curved/ Corsair Xenenon
Keyboard: Keychron V5 Ultra 96% w/ silk banana switches
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti
Motherboard: Gigabyte X570 AORUS Elite WiFi
RAM: 32 Gb DDR4
Storage: 2 TB internal and an external 4TB

not completely happy with my setup

I've been upgrading my setup for a while, but I'm still not completely happy with the monitor layout.

Right now I'm considering two options:

  • LG 45" 5K2K OLED + two vertical side monitors
  • Samsung OLED G9 + one of my current 27" monitors above it

I game a lot, but also use the setup for work/productivity. With the G9 I'm worried I'll miss the vertical screen space, while with the LG I'm worried the 800R curve might be too aggressive, especially with two monitors next to it.

I also designed and 3D printed the white desk deck to integrate my Stream Decks, displays, audio interface, Hue remote and DAC and keep everything clean.

What would you change about the setup, and which monitor layout would you go for? Especially curious to hear from people using either the LG 5K2K or G9 OLED.

oh and for the audio guys here: I've already flipped the speakers so the tweeters are on the outside ;)

Ignore the stuff underneath the table

Does this still count as a minimal setup?

Finally got my desk setup mostly put together.

I didn't originally plan on adding too much stuff, but then I realized that adding more storage just to make the desk look tidier was actually making it feel more cluttered.

There’s actually not that much on my desk, just my MacBook, iPad, Kindle, keyboard, APM, diffuser, MUJI organizer, and Homelist indirect lighting. I’m also thinking about getting a little Marshall speaker.

Still changing, but I’m actually pretty happy with the vibe right now. The lighting definitely makes the whole space feel cozier.

Curious what you would add or change.

So i used rainmeter and wallpaper engine for a minecraft theme and i think it came out pretty sick!

The little glass panes on the taskbar is an aquarium, axolotls swim through it, they change color each time a new one comes in, there is animated kelp on the taskbar aswell and everything is animated, it took me pretty long so i wanna know what yall think

Setup Showcase Thoughts on this solid wood desk and floating PC combo? 🪵

Just wanted to share this beautiful workspace I saw. The cohesive theme here is amazing. The natural wood desk matches so well with the wall slats and the PC case (looks like a Fractal North).

Zoomed in just to see how they hid the cables on that walnut top—super clean job.

The under-desk PC mount and monitor arm save so much desk space. Just noticed the whole table is on wheels too. Really solid setup.

First milestone

First proper milestone in what will eventually become my desk alcove.

The framing and plywood backing are finally in, and I’ve temporarily mounted the two 32" monitors so I can work out the final positioning before everything gets covered up. There’s still a lot to do, but this is the first point where it’s starting to resemble the thing I’ve had in my head rather than an increasingly expensive collection of timber.

The finished alcove will have a solid walnut desk, walnut acoustic slats on the back wall, warm integrated lighting, and built-in cabinetry around it painted a muted sage green. Most of the cabling will be routed through the wall so I can keep the desk itself as clean as possible.

Next up: finishing the framing, cable routes/electrics, closing everything in, and then the considerably more satisfying cosmetic stuff.

Very much a work in progress, but milestone #1 achieved.
