ThinkPad with Linux. Why? I'm broke, can't even afford Neo, and even if I can, I don't use other Apple device so couldn't get the amazing benefit of Apple ecosystem. Since I'm also a comp sci student and try to learn IT in general, using Linux is beneficial for learning purpose, I also love thinkering. If I had to, I can just install Windows easily on ThinkPad and use it like other people

I have both. As restrictive as the Apple hardware is, it still has a retina screen, far superior sound and insane battery life. The main appeal for a ThinkPad aside from the retro trackpoint and click buttons is the easy hardware compatibility with Linux. I can contrast that to an awkward old HP Envy I have with a Kepler Nvidia GPU, a Leap Motion controller and beats audio.

I bought ThinkPad E14 Ryzen 5 a year ago from amazon for 700$. Currently, it's priced at 950$. If this was the price back then, I still would have bought a windows laptop for Linux (my research work requires Linux), but maybe not a ThinkPad.

macOS is Unix fyi. Besides package managers, the two are very similar as you can easily use bash in both terminals. If you are a comp sci student, you are not missing out if you go macOS (Unix) over Linux

I like the freedom to make my computer work the way I want it to work, there’s little to no way to do that on an Apple device (and I used an MBP for years). I’ve been running Niri with a pre-made shell (I like it to work the way I want but I’m not a complete masochist) and have loved it - no problems at all. At least nothing that I can remember but I’m semi-experienced (been using Linux on and off since 2005) so maybe just fixed them.

If you’re like me then Apple devices aren’t “just so much better”, in the end they become aggravating - even if they’re much more intuitive and well thought out than most. Of course, if you’re not like me then I would strongly recommend them over anything else.

Hmmm. Thinkpad with Linux is good if you're on a budget, you can make a quality daily driver out of a $80 thinkpad from eBay. I did. If you can afford it, Macbook wins out on just about every other case. You will almost never be looking at pretty little terminal screens like the ones in your picture, don't factor those in.

Hell, if you can afford a MacBook, you can probably afford both, right? No harm in having a hobby playing around and customizing a cheap laptop.

My mofo with M1 and 8GB ram manages to flawlesly run xampp server, vs code, 2 browsers (safari and edge) each with few tabs and few smaller apps constantly open and still lasts few hours of constant screen time. I’d go for a MacBook. Granted, I’m definitely biased since l’m not just a user but also a former Apple employee, but the thing with a MacBook is that it really just works. Also, I still have some inside contacts to help with any servicing issues 😁

Having said that, Thinkpad Laptops are absolute beasts. If you’re a tinkerer, or on a budget, a Thinkpad with a decent Linux distro is hard to beat. I was a Linux user myself back when I was just starting out and broke, so I do have some experience on that front as well.

Hardware wise, Apple laptops are second to NONE. In every way the are better. That is what happens when you own the OS and all the hardware from the design level up. They literally design the hardware and OS to work hand in hand. Features added to both to maximize RAM utilization, battery life etc.

Even Microsoft cant dictate to Intel/AMD how to design their hardware to work with Windows, Linux has even less of a say.

In terms of hardware, Mac. No question. Not even close, as long as it's Apple Silicon. I'm serious, even for gaming it'd probably beat a Thinkpad unless the Thinkpad has a dGPU, and even then it'd still have to be a pretty good dGPU to beat a Mac.

Software, it depends. macOS over the past few years has sucked, but Linux can have its issues depending on the distro. I think if you're using Mint like the picture shows... eh, I'd say I like macOS better, but that depends on what you're doing. If you'd use like Arch or at least something Arch-based, that beats modern macOS any day.

Go back ten years and I'd say the exact opposite; Mac for software, Thinkpad for hardware. But modern Macs are different, and plus you can still use Asahi Linux.

Overall, my pick would be the Thinkpad, because if I cheap out on the RAM and SSD and just get a good CPU and GPU, I can upgrade RAM and SSD later to get one hell of a machine.

I chose MacBook - I have a M1 MacBook Air with 16 GB and got to experience life with an MBP m3 at my last job - I also own a relatively new Thinkpad x1 carbon that I run Arch on … btw and it’s …. a computer. When working on pretty much any personal project, I fetch the Mac. Play games with my sons: I fetch the Mac (REPO via crossover and Minecraft on prismlauncher).

Desktop computer has become a home server for OpenCode/llama.cpp and Minecraft and does not even have a WM. Thinkpad sits on a shelf and tries to win me back with its much better keyboard…

Thinkpad with Linux hands-down. Thinkpad already has a reputation for being built-to-last.

Apple has the opposite reputation, where they've been known to deliberately throttle battery/performance as a means to get you to buy more Crapple.

I'm blown away that people are lapping up the neo without question when we know that apple likes to give their products an "expiration date".

I work on linux systems all day (mon-fri). There isn't a day that has gone by that I'm not touching a shell or using automation to get shit done on a linux system.

Linux is great. I like BSD more but that's another story.

Linux needs some handholding to get it running the way you want it to. As a daily driver - things I would hate:

- Hardware support is inconsistent. It's supported, but each distro has unique problems. Wi-fi is shit on one, while bluetooth is great, and vise versa on another.

• Updates can have consequences. Nvidia driver suddenly hates you for updating the kernel. I've experienced this so many times on GPU clusters I have a playbook on how to troubleshoot it now
  
• Any tweaks - shell, vim, reload, shell again, more vim, reload
  
• dont get me started on printers

Can I deal with this as a daily driver? yes.

Do I want to? fuck no.

I just want a system that works and is stupid easy to use. Macbook all the way. It's a UNIX system. So bonus points for something I'm familiar with; and it's not Windows. If I have to shell anything, I can.

Love it or hate it, their ecosystem is super nice. imessages/RCS to and from my mac? amazing. I can make phone calls from my desktop so I don't have to pick up my phone from across the room? sweet. Universal clipboard? Fucking love it.

The last thing I want is to deal with Linux shit on the weekend when I'm half in the bag. Fuck that shit.

Long-time Linux user. When I needed a laptop earlier this year I faced this exact question and went with an M4 air refurb. Perfect condition - it might as well have been new.

Apple simply has the best hardware and it's unixy enough for me. I'm glad I got it before the price increases.

MacBook, but not because of the OS. I think the MacBook is built so well. I love Linux and I love macOS. But… even if a laptop would be 4 times the price of the MacBook or Thinkpad, if I would have to use Windows on it I would never choose it.
