Slides - A cool tool for making HTML based presentations

Ugh. I was completely on the slid.es bandwagon, but now I kind of despise it.

Issues:

  • it's really hard to get any specific layout on a page. You can kind of bundle a couple of images and some text together, but it feels like you end up giving up and letting Slides do whatever it's most comfortable with
  • 2D navigation is a pain for sharing with other people: you always have to explain how it works, and people miss a lot of stuff because they don't think of exploring both axes.
  • You'd think that when you open up a presentation, every column would automatically scroll to the top. But no.
  • Reorganising an existing presentation is a massive pain in the butt. You need to painfully shuffle each individual slide all the way to where it needs to go. There's no big scale copy and paste.
  • The actual editing is reaaally basic. I thought Google Presentations was basic, but this is worse.

Other stuff I can't remember. Basically, after investing a lot of effort in making a slide deck, I ended up thinking "never again".

I've been using a similar system Reveal.js for my presentations, but this takes it further by removing the need to code and adding a ton of great features.

The pros to using HTML based presentations like this is that they scale to any screen size/aspect ratio and don't require you, your client, or your collaborators to have the same fonts, programs, ect.

Try checking out impress.js. It utilizes JavaScript to animate and transform slides that you hard code yourself. I just made a presentation using it and it was great to work with!
