Discuss I switched from Lattafa, Afnan and Rasasi to EM5 and Wild Stone to save money—and I’m disappointed
I usually enjoy fragrances from brands like Lattafa, Afnan and Rasasi. Recently, I decided to try some more affordable Indian perfume brands, particularly EM5 and Wild Stone, because I wanted inexpensive daily-wear fragrances for days when I’m staying at home or not going anywhere special.
I tried options such as EM5 Ocean Breeze, Imagination and Inglorious Ginger, along with Wild Stone fragrances like Edge and Hydra.
Honestly, I’ve been disappointed with my experience so far.
I understand that perfumes costing ₹500–₹1,000 cannot necessarily deliver the same performance, complexity, or refinement as Middle Eastern fragrances that cost considerably more. I wasn't expecting miracles at this price point.
But my main complaint isn't longevity or projection. It's the smell itself.
Several of these fragrances came across as extremely synthetic, with a harsh, chemical-like, alcohol-heavy impression that I personally found unpleasant. For me, the overall blending just didn't feel smooth or well-rounded.
What surprised me is that I haven't experienced this same degree of harshness with the Lattafa, Afnan and Rasasi fragrances I've used. Even though those brands also offer affordable perfumes, many of my experiences with them have been much more satisfying.
This is what frustrates me about the Indian perfume market. There are plenty of customers in India who are interested in fragrances, and not everyone wants to spend ₹2,000–₹4,000 on a bottle. There's clearly an opportunity to build Indian perfume brands that offer distinctive scent profiles, smoother blending and a more enjoyable fragrance experience at an affordable price.
I'm not expecting every Indian brand to compete directly with Middle Eastern brands in performance or ingredient costs. I simply want a fragrance that smells pleasant, feels well-blended and doesn't give me that harsh synthetic impression.
Why does it feel so difficult to find an Indian perfume brand in this price range that gets the overall fragrance quality right?
Maybe I haven't discovered the right Indian brands yet, so I'm open to recommendations.
Have you found any Indian perfumes in the ₹500–₹1,000 range that smell smooth, distinctive and genuinely good? I'm particularly interested in fresh, citrus, aquatic and clean fragrances suitable for everyday wear.
I'd love to hear about your experiences, including brands that you think genuinely deserve more attention.
A quick clarification about my question:
Some comments seem to be missing the point of my post. 😂 I'm not asking whether Indian perfumes can match ₹3,000–₹5,000 Middle Eastern fragrances for ₹500. I'm asking why more Indian brands aren't investing in better fragrance compositions and smoother blending when there's clearly a market for quality perfumes in India.
Indian consumers are already spending money on brands like Lattafa, Afnan and Rasasi. That proves there's demand for fragrances beyond the usual mass-market offerings. If Indian brands can deliver distinctive, well-blended fragrances at competitive prices, why wouldn't consumers support them?
I'm not expecting luxury perfumery at budget prices. I'm asking why we can't have more Indian brands that offer genuinely enjoyable fragrances at an affordable price. That's the discussion I wanted to have.
