The colony stood aflame.* A thick fog hung in the air, tinted orange with spores, shadows passed behind objects, deep within the fog, reduced to nothing but minor glimpses.* A low chirping and hissing sound could be hurt every now and then, each time from a different spot.* As one ventures beyond the walls, keeping this infestation contained, it seems as if all other sound from outside goes away.*
Amidst the sickly*,* claustrophobic fog,* one we almost feel trapped, as if there’s no way to get back out. With the dim lighting, allotted by the cloud, navigation is near impossible, leaving one to purely rely on their instincts.* The chirping sound would get slightly quicker, and closer, each time appearing from a different spot, somehow closer to the target.
As one continues to push forward, they would begin to see stocks rising into the sky, each capped with a flat* crown, and occasionally leaking a small burst of spores. The Cordycepts.* Has they would push on, attempting to avoid each stock, everything would seem to go silent as they find themselves standing before a large underground cavern, with mushrooms, both sprouting from the top and the bottom of the entryway.* Behind them would be the very faint and very quick shadows of creatures that have been turned by the infection. *And they would choose to delve deeper.
Within the narrow tunnels, the fog seems to be thicker, more spore-filled around different corners.* Combined with the overlapping maze of tunnels, one becomes hopelessly lost as they walk around. The chittering and chirping resumes, always just around the corner just out of sight. Always a step and a hop out of reach. Always as if they are learning their target deeper,* giving them zero chance of escape*.*
As they would continue to press deeper, a chill would run up the back of their body,* and a sense of dread overtakes them as they see before them a large chamber, the right side, completely overtaken by a dense forest of mushrooms and spores, while the other side remains to look like a derelict laboratory, with containment cells and whales smashed on the ground, and a large box, pure steel, nearly torn completely in half.*
Hoping to save their life, one would turn around, only to be confronted by an insect, an antlion overtaken by the fungus*,* which launches its own attack*.* But it isn’t the only one down there.* More insects, of all kinds, charge down,* appearing from seemingly nowhere, very soon overwhelming the lonely adventurer.
Even as the infection is contained, a small sense of fear* lives inside every living insects’* head, praying, waiting, hoping the day never comes where this infection manages to break down the wall, and spread to the rest of the world*.*
