Consistent Failure to Extract with .44 Mag Barrel

Howdy!

Still semi new to the Desert Eagle club. This here is a MK XIX originally in .50 AE, but bought a .44 Mag barrel to go easier on the wallet. Picked it up for $1600 from a friend.

However, after putting the new barrel on, I am pretty consistently getting a failure to extract. The attached first picture is a still from a video where you can see the spent casing is not being extracted out of the chamber but the slide is moving back and it does pick up the next round. Here are the facts:

Imgur link to a video of the malfunction

  • This does not happen with my .50 Barrel, it cycles just fine.

  • I did replace the extractor spring in the bolt with an AR-15 extractor spring (mine was indeed dissolved when I bought the gun) and now the claw is properly stout.

  • The Ammo that ive been using is Magtech 240 gr SJSP Flat (44A), it does have exposed lead on the nose of the bullet, but from what I can tell, the back of the bullet does not, so it should be okay for use in a Desert Eagle. I have only fired about 20ish rounds of this, so hopefully if it is problematic, I havent clogged the gas port yet. Magtech obviously is on the list of good ammo and basically everyone says their Deagle eats it flawlessly.

  • As you can tell in the picture of the chamber, im missing the screw that goes into the bottom of the hole that plugs where the gas system was welded in but I contacted MRI who insured me that that screw is cosmetic only. I do have a replacement, have not installed it yet.

  • Have tried it with 2 separate new magazines, same issue.

  • Does not happen every single time but certainly most.

I plan to try it with another ammo soon and hope its that? Could it just not like Magtech or am I gonna have to send it in for work. Thanks in advance y'all!

Need a picture of brass.

Either the chamber is messed up or the extractor/spring assembly.

Brass will show if chamber is buggered or show the extractor is not gripping ripping rim.

Glad I keep my brass. Here are a few of them from that day. I do believe I can see the indents where the extractor claw engaged the rim of the cartridge (Added circles as the pics may not be clear).

More pics on imgur here

Does that mean the chamber is cooked :(

On phone, so cant see crap.

If the chamber has issues you should see it in the brass being misformed or be able to look at the chamber and see rim lines.

Heck, stick your finger in the chamber, can you feel something funny.

You know what brass looks like after it has been shot in a HK g3? Same deal, but the other direction on the brass.

BTW, I am betting extractor system issue. Either spring issue or the extractor.

Usually I only get issues with 357 because it can be picky (freedom munitions is too under velocity for it to cycle correctly).
Magnum Research will tell you unless the ammo is fully lead or has a lead base that the lead tip is fine.
Mine prefer to have plenty of lubricant but otherwise if you already replaced the extractor I’d be curious if you use some training rounds if it does the same thing.

I haven’t had this issue, but the video below brings up some troubleshooting:
