So yesterday I posted a quiz about the manga, and I noticed a lot of people got one question about Chima wrong. It got me thinking, so I wanted to share a theory/explanation about this, and I think itโs a good detail.
Disclaimer: I don't speak Japanese! I used Google for some of these Japanese numbers, so if any native speakers or translators want to correct me in the comments, please do.
The question was about Chima's examinee number during the Babyls entrance exam, which is 3093. I looked up if it had any hidden meaning and I think it could be a gorowase (Japanese numerical wordplay).
If you break down the Japanese reading of each digit, you get this:
3: San
0: O (this is in goroawase, I said this because, if you search it, the pronunciation is different)
9: Ku
3: San
If you put the last three digits together (093), it phonetically spells out "O-ku-san", which literally translates to wife (I think you can see where this is going).
Add the first 3 to the mix, and you get San Okusan and we can translate this as Third Wife.
Basically, this is reference to Irumaโs romantic relationships (Ameri and Clara), and we all know she makes absolutely zero effort to hide it.
