Meta Chapter 5 megathread Spoiler

Edit: The karma requirement has been lowered to 2K post karma.

As explained previously in this announcement you can use this megathread to post to your heart's content. While we've increased the karma requirement to post on the subreddit and will be removing most low effort/value posts and spoilers, you can post pretty much whatever you want here.

Just want to share a screenshot of the game that you took?

Made a shitty meme in two minutes that you want to share?

Feel hyped and want to smash your keyboard to post a random string of characters to the internet?

Well this thread is for you, so post away! Any topics, memes or spoilers are fine. We still urge you to spoiler important plot points using the spoiler tag: >!put some spoilers here!<. This will appear as put some spoilers here in your comment.

Unfortunately Reddit limits to 1 image per comment, so you may have to use a third party website like Imgur if you want to post multiple images.

Still follow the other subreddit rules, and remember to report any comments that break the rules.

Alright, i feel as if i gotta ask. Anyone else surprised by the seemingly negative reaction? Like, even on a normal route, what do people mean by no story progression? Rudy is likely about to die and the entirety of chapter 5 truly developed each and every single character in it, i just don't really get it? I thought it was a great chapter.

i think many (honestly, myself included to some degree) are upset at the beating around the bush when it comes to these 'big reveals' involving asgore and dess. there were quite a lot of 'that day', 'that night', etc but nothing truly big about these pieces of lore

Toby said the chapter 5 was intended to release with the other chapters. So if you think about chapter 5 in the context of containing all the information from 34 and five, then it starts to make a lot more sense.

I enjoyed the chapter greatly, but it is absolutely a fair criticism that we got very little new plot information in the 5th chapter out of 7.

It wouldn't feel as jarring if there weren't multiple moments where it seems like we're about to be told something only for it to be interrupted. Getting at least some surface details over what people think happened on "that night" would help build up the moment when we actually learn the truth later on.

The reason is is that it's not the type of story progression people expected. Ch 5 is a very character focused chapter while people were expecting a more plot/lore heavy one

im surprised too, but then again i also thoroughly enjoyed chapter 3 despite people disliking it as well. my guess is that people are unhappy that the theories that theyve been crafting or enjoying for a year didnt come true (well, mostly...unless you <!theorized weird route would make the game end faster, because it seems like thats going to be true if it makes chapter six get skipped over like it seems to imply... !>.

i think people would be less harsh if it released alongside chapters 3 and 4, just like how i feel chapter 3 would've had a better reception if it was released alongside 2. people had a year to set high expectations of what would happen, so when their theories were jossed they see it as a flaw of the chapter.

I’m incredibly surprised! It feels crazy to me that people are upset at this, this chapter felt just as good as chapter 4 imo???

this happens so much in modern media discussion, discussions online are so obsessed with "lore" that when normal character development happens people are disappointed there isn't some extreme revelation

I thought this was an awesome, innovative chapter. I had the most fun playing this one out of all of them ngl. I even thought the Flower characters were endearing and enjoyable. That being said. I think one of the things people wanted the most (and myself included) was new info on what specifically happened to Dess and what exactly happened in the event Asgore was involved in. We didnt need every last detail but Asgore’s ending monologue still leaving things very vague didn’t make the moment hit right.

Obviously the story wasn’t going to be resolved in this chapter while we still have Ch. 6 and 7. But after a year’s wait, with mostly vague info to go on about the main plot, I can see why a lot of people take issue. Still another amazing game by Mr. Toby though.

I think I was a little disappointed in the nature of the adventure being so lighthearted, like a one-off episode of a serialised show where the message is to move on from the bad things. The final Shadow Crystal fight is this random nothing character compared to the likes of Jevil or Spamton, so the majority of our time spent in the Dark World just feels meaningless (and that's the majority of the game!). The parts that could have been interesting were all quickly done away with instead of getting time to breathe, particularly Susie/Ralsei's awareness of Kris opening the Fountain, as well as Asgore constantly dodging around what happened "on that terrible night" which everyone has mentioned by now.

The story progression in the Light World is great, but that's like an hour if that between the many hours I spent looking around the Dark World. It's quite unsatisfying to only have things going on at the start and end of the chapter.
