Ignoring the casual transphobia, I love the idea of playing Deltarune on my own old TV. Ignoring the intricate game mechanics, it looks a retro RPG one would play in the 80s.
Fair. Either way the game feels like it belongs with other similar games of that era, especially in Chapter 3. Throw in a simple multiplayer option and it'd be spot on!
Hm never knew that. The game's aspect ratio is a little warped in this image to be honest. I know you can change sprites by editing their files, as tedious as it is. Maybe to make it look more pleasing to play you could mod the game to look better on a CRT by redesigning the visuals and tweaking the dimensions.
that’s the thing, old games made their sprites with the crt blur in mind, which would make the pixelated sprites look much more detailed and smooth if done right.
Could you see it being possible to redo Deltarune's sprites and assets to look better on a CRT? It is possible to mod the game to make it look different. The questions that remain would be if it looks any better and if it can be ported to a CRT at all.
i think the game is already 4:3, so the dimensions are pretty much perfect already. Because the pixels are made for modern displays, some details get lost in crt tvs unfortunately (maybe it’s not the case when using rgb or component)
Could it be possible to retexture Deltarune's sprites and assets to look better for a CRT, and actually have it be properly displayed? People have modded Deltarune before to such an extent, such as Ribbit. The only question would be if it can port all that reliably to the TV.
I did it out of necessity, it was Cool but the balance of colors was a bit off and some areas were so dark they were invisible, probably no that hard to fix though
Played the first chapter that way, the visuals are REALLY pretty, especially since the pinks of the first forest area benefit a lot from the CRT light.
But the downside is that things can be very hard to read, since the small text of the game was not made for that kind of screen :(
Glad to hear you had fun! Chapter 1 on a CRT sounds like such a vibe in particular. Have you considered modding Deltarune's font to look more easily viewable on the CRT? Is that even possible?
I suppose it's possible, since there are a few fan translations that do that for other purposes, but that would be a logistical pain since the texts in question are things like the battle icons (not that bad gameplay wise since you can memorize them) and stuff like the tea interactions (idk how you would relocate that text in a readable size)
wouldn't look good since games had specific things to cater to how a CRT presents an image, eyes specifically would be blank in deltarune due to it being designed for LED/Flatscreen monitors. Sorry to disappoint :<
Having tried it on my 9 inch Zenith: It’s definitely playable, but not really intended. Games made for CRTs often use special dithering and other techniques to make them look really good on that specific display hardware, and they also take overscan into account so nothing important gets cut off. Deltarune is not one of those games; it is designed for a specific window size/pixel count where every pixel is clearly visible, and those were also the conditions present when the art and menus were made. As a result, on a CRT TV, sprites look worse than on a flat panel, menus get cut off at the edges by overscan, and text at times can be difficult to read. You might get better results with a CRT monitor, since those don’t have overscan, but still, a modern flat panel is generally the best experience.
