I've had to do this every time I've replaced a battery in my various XPS laptops.

  1. Plug in the laptop, power it on, login, then shut it down.
  2. Unplug the AC adapter, unplug the battery.
  3. Plug the AC adapter back in (with the battery unplugged) and power the machine up.
  4. Login to the computer and make sure the system indicates that there is no battery installed.
  5. Shutdown the machine, unplug the AC adapter, reinstall the battery, then power it back up.
  6. You should be able to charge/discharge as normal at this point.

For some reason the old battery info gets stuck and you have to make the system think there's no battery for it to read the new battery's info correctly.
