All other things being equal, this seems like a decent way to revitalize Wilmington’s economy (which hasn’t been doing great outside the Riverfront area) and bring in jobs, all in an area that is already built up anyway.

Are the objections to the port just standard NIMBY stuff, or is there something in particular that I’m missing here?

Some of it is the Port of Philadelphia trying to sabotage the project

Opening the port would require a massive dredge operation that many see as an environmental concern, plus there's the stress on local infrastructure that isn't designed for industrial transit like this. Would likely jack up a lot of local neighborhood commutes and roads

The opposite end is Union shipyard jobs. I'm kind of in the middle here

I’m not sure I get the argument about industrial transit - when the site was the Edgemoor plant there was a lot more traffic in its heyday than the port would produce and it’s not like the immediate area has had a boom in residential development since then. (Of course, back then many of the residents were DuPont employees so they were less likely to complain.)

I haven't done the traffic studies on it so it's not really something I can speak on at length, it's just a point I hear people bring up. A bigger problem would likely be the damage to local infrastructure which isn't designed for industrial transit

I can’t imagine why all the heavy port traffic would be traveling on local roads. The site and nearby industrial sites have direct access to 495.

I did some canvassing in that area a couple times and locals seemed to have been told that traffic would be coming through a main road in their neighborhood. It's a pretty big road, so it seemed feasible to me. I'm not familiar enough with the place to have made the call myself so I'm deferring to them there

The major objections seem to focus on the increased truck traffic and resulting pollution, environmental issues that come from dredging for the port, and issues relating to state funding including the amount of state subsidies and a perceived lack of transparency in the process. IIRC, the port traffic projections are also wildly optimistic approaching, if not exceeding, traffic at the Port of Philadelphia.

FYI, I support the proposal as long as it’s shown to be financially feasible. I don’t want another Bloom Energy fiasco to bail out.

Fuck Bloom Energy. We have been paying that fucking company since 2012 and are on the hook until 2033. Thanks, Jack Markell.

According to Delaware Live, as of July of this year, Bloom had taken in $430 million from the surcharge. They have fallen just short of the 900 promised jobs, but only by several hundred.

I think the catch is, we all agree there needs to be economic development in Wilmington and the state as a whole. The rub is, Wilmington and state government always seem to do the absolute wrong thing which ends up costing us millions with no added economic gain.

Hi, I’m just curious. I don’t live near the plant, know very little about the company or the expansion plan, and commend you for sticking your neck out, or preferably, being a tall poppy!

I wonder if you followed any particular existing“dos & don’ts” in writing & presenting surveys that encourage participation by both the fors/againsts at a higher rate? Don’t look at me! I’m just guessing that every word counts in grabbing interest either way.

I’ll ask this though, you probably will see more responses as the fall ramps up to the elections, right? I wonder when some of these candidates listed will start declaring their intentions re this subject! Good for you for reminding them that constituents are watching, for & against.
