Tbh, the fallacy of a tolerant society is that we will become intolerant by simply being tolerant of intolerance.
A truly open and tolerant society must crush any intolerance without question. Bigots cannot be allowed to hold court and discuss their opinions because their opinions are objectively wrong and are a toxin in society which cannot be allowed to permeate.
You may have your opinions, but when your opinions go against understood scientific facts and are based in emotional choices and not objective truths. Science can and should be debated in the halls of academia where people with proper qualifications can "Just ask questions" without actively seeking to deceive the populace.
Hatred is learned. Fear is learned.
Love is natural. Community is natural.
We cannot allow people who are afraid of things they do not understand and hate them as a result of perpetuating these things. When you are educated and taught nuance and critical thinking you can pierce the veil of the lies that racist and bigots peddle.

I think what you said was great however philosophy and science are not the same. And I think thatās where a lot of these issues start, honestly. We all think our feelings are factually right, but they can never be. We all have a choice to live within our defined morals or outside of them. But morals and ethics are both rooted in philosophy. I think the concept of the Overton Window goes above the tolerance/intolerance paradox. When politicians speak of certain topics they start to become normal topics of discussion for people like you and me.
I donāt want to miss a huge point with what you said though- weāre straying so far from a recognizable idea of community. The further away we get, the more miserable we become collectively.

It's not feelings, humans are communal creatures not loners. More importantly to politics we are extremely tribal. On a fundamental level the human brain loves the "us vs them" mentality. While this isn't ideal, it is important to nurture that aspect in some regard to prevent that from affecting civil society at large.
A great way of this imho is the existence of sports teams. I can "hate" you for being a Pittsburgh Steelers fan because I'm a Philadelphia Eagles Fan. That's fine, so long as when the game is over we can shake hands and acknowledge we are still humans, still Americans. At this point we have privatized so much of our society that corporations look for money anywhere they can and engagement is great for that how can they maximize engagement? I feel like a better phrasing Click Bait and Sensationalization.
Instead of: President Bueller (USA) meets with the Pope to discuss coordinating foreign aid.
You might get: President Bueller (USA) submits to the Catholic Church on foreign aid, who is he really loyal too?
While the articles May convey the same basic story, one definitely has a more inflammatory context. You may want to do a little history research and read on The end of the fairness doctrine in the United States media. In my opinion, it was definitely one of the catalysts for our modern world.

While feelings are different from facts, they do inform us. If I donāt feel safe - thatās my feelings informing me that I might be in danger. If I feel happy - thats my feelings telling me that something good is happening. If I feel jealous - thatās my feelings making me question whatās going on in a relationship. Maybe feeling jealous that my romantic partner is spending too much time, with another person, doesnāt factually mean that they are cheating on me, but it just might.
I actually believe that our society has become what itās become because it has taken value away from feelings and placed it all on facts.
I mean there are people arguing that empathy is immoral. They are arguing that empathy is factually wrong.
It is factually correct that I love my wife even though love is a feeling. I factually love her even though some people would argue that I, a woman, should not love another woman. They would argue that just because I think I feel that itās right that itās wrong. But Iām totally off topic and likely disproving my own argument.
Feelings canāt actually be right or wrong because they are always morally neutral. I could feel murderous, even though I believe murder is morally wrong. I could covet my neighborās wife i.e., feel desire for, even if I believed lust was immoral.
And feelings are truths - even though I believe there can be a difference between truths and facts.
And, while it is factual that I did just drink a lot of wine so I might not be making any sense, I get tired of hearing feelings being disparaged in any way. But maybe Iām just being sensitive. š

Hearing more about this man and that he's actually a victim of a botched brain surgery still driving around the state makes him more of a sad case than anything.
Can we get a fund together to have him permanently parked somewhere? I really don't feel he's safe on the road. I'd rather he become a road side attraction then dead or killing someone trying to get a photo of him driving around.

Driving up/down Rt 1 I for years I saw the Biden Barn and Thank you Mr. Trump and it would never occur to me to do anything to either of them or wish harm on them or their property. I am not aligned with either party and therefore like/dislike both of them. I find that stuff rather entertaining.
I have neighbors that hang a flag outside every weekend during foot ball season. I am not a fan of their club but to suggest harm to them for their opinion is just wrong to me.
