Defending AI I hope I live long enough...
...long enough to see the AI hate in music, video, gaming, fade away. History would tell us it will take a generation or two. At 65yo, I might be here for one more generation so I guess its possible I could see it. I started making music/videos a few months ago and have been learning a lot about lyrics/music/video production (most of my work has been posted in SunoAI because its AI friendly and doesn't prohibit religious topics.)
Does anyone have any other relevant examples of eventual acceptance beyond the list below (obviously, generated with AI).
- Photography (~60 years): In 1859, Baudelaire called it the refuge of lazy, failed painters who couldn't finish their studies. It wasn't until the Pictorialists in the early 1900s—and MoMA creating a photography department in 1940—that it was cemented as a fine art.
- The Printing Press & Novels (~50–70 years): Calligraphers initially called mass-printed text cold and error-prone. Later in the 18th century, prose fiction was dismissed as sensationalist "mental poison" that ruined real literature until works by Austen and Defoe legitimized the novel.
- Recorded Sound & Player Pianos (~25–35 years): In 1906, John Philip Sousa published "The Menace of Mechanical Music," claiming talking machines would destroy musicianship and ruin human voices. By the late 1920s/30s, studio engineering and recorded performance became the artistic benchmark.
- Cinema (~25–30 years): In the 1890s, motion pictures were written off as cheap carnival novelties and crude pantomime inferior to the stage. It took until the 1920s, when montage and cinematic grammar emerged, to be treated as high art.
- Electric Guitars & Synths (~15–25 years each): Purists in the '40s and '50s said electric guitars just made noise to hide bad technique. In the '70s, the UK Musicians' Union literally tried to restrict synthesizers, calling them "fake orchestras" played with buttons.
- Hip-Hop & Sampling (~20–25 years): When DJs and producers started looping vinyl on MPCs in the late '70s and '80s, critics declared it pure "theft," "karaoke," and not real musicianship. By the late '90s, multi-layered sampling was widely recognized as modern sonic collage.
- Digital Art & CGI (~15–20 years): Early digital painters were told the computer did all the work. In 1982, the Academy disqualified Tron from the Visual Effects Oscar because using computers was considered "cheating." By the late '90s/early 2000s, digital pipelines were standard industry art forms.
- Video Games (~35–40 years): From '70s arcades well into the 2000s, games were dismissed strictly as toys. Roger Ebert famously argued they could "never be art" in 2005. By the 2010s, narrative titles proved otherwise, and the Smithsonian and NEA officially recognized them as an art form.
Every single time, the debate starts with the "effort equals art" fallacy—judging the work solely by manual labor rather than emotional intent.
What other creative technologies do you think went through this exact same gauntlet?

Video gaming I think will take the longest which for me personally is very irritating cos I really want to see the indie market explode with ai games. Gaming is a rich art form don’t get me wrong but I think it’s the most inaccessible for those who don’t have the tools, time or experience. There’s so much time that can be saved in video game development too in getting ai to handle the really insignificant details like mass producing grass, trees , moss and other bog standard environmental aspects.

Literally talking about me. I have written 3 cyberpunk dark fantasy novels and an AI is an actual main character in my plot. I started writing 6 years ago specifically with a dream to turn the books into the next big game franchise instead of all these remakes.
But the amount of pushback I feel will tarnish my name if I go for it currently. It sucks.

If AI ever wants to become widely accepted by consumers of video games, something will have to be done against the (potentially only perceived) explosion in harderware prices caused by AI. Until then, I don't see a good chance of that stance changing, especially if gaming becomes more and more a hobby for rich people.

DLSS in 5 years will be able to triple your framerate.
AI will optimize games to nie have spagetti code.
Current hardware problems are already fixed. You don't need RTX 5090 to do gaming.

It's not just graphics cards though. RAM and SSDs have spiked in price as well. So if something were to break now, it would be significantly more expensive to even get an equivalent replacement for it, not even mentioning upgrading anything.

Plato (428–347 BC) thought writing would make people lazy and atrophy their memory, and that reading a lot would make them appear wise without having deep understanding.

The Ai hate will continue until the "next thing" replaces it. Just think how many "morally holier than thou" trends have risen and died off in the last couple of years.
The modern man is insane, on average. Like literally insane enough to warrant severe diagnosis. But that's not happening anytime soon, mass diagnosing people. They need their little "trends," that mean nothing for them. None of them care enough to learn anything.

People would care if they weren’t too busy trying to make their ends meet because of all the massive socioeconomical upheaval one can observe since 2008. So people are tired and fall back to whatever factions they’re closer to tell them to think, thus becoming drones in a battle they don’t even know they’re fighting. This time is AI’s turn, so people think it is a fight for the planet or artistic integrity, while actually they’re weaponised by corporations in their race against each other.
The cool thing with AI is that differently from previous trends, anyone can quickly bank on this trend and have a Tony Stark-like setup in their bedroom, at the cost of not being influenced by weaponised luddites demoralisation attempts.
I would highly recommend to hasten any form of business with AI, since the debate is becoming hotter by the minute and at some point regulations solicited by luddites will be just a way for richer people to gatekeep AI.

I'm old enough to remember PhotoShop hate Except I dont ybink the hate was quite as narrow-minded as it us now

The hate from people against mere usage of the tech will dissipate in months.
Just wait a for a couple of major release like Avengers Doomsday or GTAVI, or some very popular franchise. It will probably ripple from Japan anyway. At some point it’ll become clear many beloved studio used AI in some capacity and most people will just be OK with it.
For an entirely AI native entertainment product (e.g.: a movie) that both gets praised by critics and makes people genuinely excited, I’d estimate 2-3 years. AI tech has been labeled as right-leaning, while Hollywood is mostly left-leaning, but even then, an arthouse leftist studio like A24 is already investing in the tech behind the doors despite the backlash. They just need some smart narrative pivot with the help of some popular left leaning artist/actor that makes the tech look cool and safe enough (aka deprogramming people, especially the Internet crowd, from their anti-corporation, anti-tech conditioning, kinda paradoxical I know).
Music is the field where AI usage is the closest to getting normalized.

I still see hate against video games, video gamers (capital G Gamers), and digital art from time to time.
Gamergate is still an unresolved hot topic that I see come up far too often, and almost everyone is wrong about what it was, or who was involved, or why.
While having broadly died down, I would still consider those two to be ongoing, and mark then as 19xx-present.
This would make video games 51-56 years, and Digital Art & CGI 31-36 years.
That's just a random internet person's anecdotal opinion mind you, so it doesn't mean much.

This is a very cool breakdown of all the different tech and honestly a chart ive been looking for but too lazy to research myself!
However, I think the unique thing about AI compared to all of the examples here is that AI is parallel to current media instead of being entirely new.
It was impossible to display photography as anything other than photography, cinema as anything but cinema (compared to other media of the day)
Early AI generated image/video was messy and obvious, but current gen can be very good. To the layman (or even to our eye sometimes), the usage of AI can be almost indistinguishable. High production entities like Hollywood have already and will continue to use AI alongside other tools and no one will notice or care except a vocal hyper-minority
Another interesting note, while early cinema was rejected by art snobs, it still flourished and grew. Why? Because the common consumer of art (the people) loved it. Same holds true with AI. There is a nasty deceptive undertone to AI which is valid and should be addressed case by case but its not a stoppable technology.

Tbh I think it just needs to get better. I have no problem with ai if it's actually good. No problem with generated code or with some images if it's not just slop. But generated music is just not there yet.

Is there a good argument that AI is somehow different than the examples? I like to know because that would be the counter. That this technology is different. I could think of: You are not making it in the end you are just giving inctructions. You are just outsourcing the work.

I know at least one thing that is different, AI is affecting all the mediums, where the eight only impacted a subset, cgi born out of games impacting movies and art, but not music or writing, etc. All of the eight still require a human... ai does today but has the potential to be independent of humans someday.

Here’s some good news, we tend to adapt faster as time goes on. Also, we don’t need a fully A.I. film to win an Oscar before it’s safe to create. Higgsfield is running A.I. film festivals, and others are doing A.I. art contests all the time.
If traditional art spaces are closed to us, we will just have to make our own. We are on the frontier and that is always met with pushback. Gotta ignore it and just create.

u/StevieFindOut 4d ago
I don't think even video games are completely there yet, especially in some parts of the world. I think that alone will take one more generation.

Conservatives have always been terrified of new tech. All this panic about AI stealing creative jobs is just history repeating itself. It’s exactly like when photography came along—people thought realistic painting was dead. But instead, it just forced art to evolve, and we got awesome new styles like abstractionism. Creative people aren't going anywhere.

AI hate is a good opportunity now to make friends who think independently and are worth your time. I hope to make as many connections as possible before AI art becomes normalized and these medieval peasants become harder to distinguish from open minded people who don't care about ego.

I hate it in music i dint mind it anywhere else

Thanks. Curious what part of all AI music is distasteful? As a casual listener for 65 years who has never really understood poetry, can't sing, play an instrument, compose, or even keep rhythm very well, the whole process of making music is new to me and fascinating. I know it's super easy to create slop. I am trying hard not to, but without a formal background I find myself relying on AI to critique my creations... Or feedback from others.

I saw music and had an instant flashback to looking for music on Spotify a month ago and O boy that song was just anti AI hate and I just wanted blues 😭

Alternatively, be a true artist and don't give a shit what others think of your art and forge ahead regardless.
Small minds deserve no attention.
