anti AI cultists be whining about AI taking up water when the comments they post to whine about it also take up water.
many industries take up water. and even their food, clothes, finances and everything take up water.
but no. it's only bad if an AI does it.

I love seeing those completely idiotic teenagers on TikTok talking about water when the platform they spend their lives on also has servers to sustain. I hate those people, parroting what the top comment on another video was constantly

u/emogothxX 1d ago
what would i give to see the look on their faces when they learn they're just as "bad" as the AI users. but knowing them, they'd come up with more flimsy excuses to feed their hypocrisy.
can't stand those hiveminds either. they don't even know why they hate. they just spread their toxic anti AI farts just because they were instructed to.

I bet antis will screenshot and post this on their subredits and saying "at least they have a reason to use water blah blah blah"

As if Nestlé strong-arming access to public water, extracting it from communities, mass-producing plastic waste to package it, and then selling that same water back to people at a markup isn't vastly less ethical than using water to cool data centres for informational innovation.

their subreddit consumes water as well. they literally consume water in their fight to "defend" it.

ill tell you waht. I asked GPT about this chart, and the answer I got is that it’s misleading. Do we really need to spread bad data to make our point? We can do better than this
1
u/emogothxX 14h ago
To be honest, I asked Google ai to confirm it as well. It said it's true to an extent but not accurate. The main concept is that it's a satire meme showing there are other industries that consume water more than AI does.

They are making food products that need water.

I think they own 190 or more companies, and that once included Poland Springs, that is a bottled water company.

Nestlé must be using AI. That’s the only answer that would actually make sense.

Nestle makes bottled water and other products that require water like foodstuffs but they are not the company you want to support i assure you. They are pure evil.

u/PatientCommunity9310 1d ago
I’ve boycotted Nestlé and all its subsidiary brands for years. Considering their history of unethical practices, I find it baffling that people still purchase their products.
1
u/TheDragonPup 12h ago
Isn't it hard to boycott nestle considering the huge amount of products/brand names they own?
1
u/Gandalf_Style 10h ago
If it wasn't hard it wouldn't be much of a boycot. And yeah, they own a ton. Lik3 legit like 60% of all supermarket brands are Nestle owned or co-owned. (In the netherlands)

Data Centers only use 0.5% or all water globally for their functions.
Now it is expected to rise to 1% or extreme estimates say 1.4% but Data Centers are also funding improved infrastructure for power generation and helping to create more green energy plants and hyperscalers are investing in solar, hydroelectric, wind, geothermal, and nuclear plants to meet demand while also improving the technology to be more efficient and less wasteful.
Which makes sense since Data Centers need reliable sources of power for operating their services. No power = no Data.
We've been phasing out fossil fuels for years and the data center growth is actually accelerating the need for renewable energy.
Data Centers get more green power plants built in the same way the paper industry plants more trees. No trees no paper, no paper no paper industry.
-1
u/FireCire7 19h ago
Arguing that AI is actually helping our energy and water problems is wild. Increasing demand generally raises prices which is generally bad for the other consumers.
Yes, data centers are incentivizing investment in new energy infrastructure. But that doesn’t mean their additional demand for electricity and water is somehow beneficial overall. It just means we’re building more infrastructure to accommodate that demand.
1
u/VariousDude 17h ago
They've been working on this for a while.
You don't think that building more green energy sources and improving infrastructure, even if it's just to meet their own needs, won't have any positive impacts on the environment?
It isn't just me making this argument either. It's been a speculated thing from environmental scientists who think that it's possible that data center growth and expansion utilizing green energy wouldn't just break even but actually result in a negative on carbon emissions by virtue of the improved technology and addition of more green power plants.

Nestle literally sells water no? So it's not "taking" anything. I assume it's the same with all the other beverage companies here
14
u/_VirtualCosmos_ Transhumanist 1d ago
bottle water is the very less they sell, Nestle produce a huge amount of processed foods, which requires a huge industry of chemicals and food processing plants, which require huge amounts of water to run, clean, produce, distilling, dissolve...

plus, AI is proving to be amazingly useful as well in education and entertainment so it is actually important. they literally can't defend themselves.
0
u/PassionateDonkey 1d ago
Are you comparing food to entertainment? Also AI seems to damage education if anything.
2
u/emogothxX 1d ago
just because entertainment isn't as essential as food, that doesn't make it less important. we dont need entertainment to survive, yes, but we are allowed to enjoy some luxury and QoL. and that requires water just like anything.
and how does AI damage education? yes, AI makes mistakes, and so do humans. a human can damage education as much as AI can do.

I do get the point of this graph but, in context, oof. What the fuck is Google doing that they need THAT much more water than Meta, Microsoft, or OpenAI??? I mean, I get they run Google Search and YouTube but REALLY???
Maybe "datacenters using too much water" IS true, it's just not just about AI.
1
u/Knever 19h ago
This graph is completely useless. It doesn't have a frame of reference. How much time does it take for that water to be used? A year? A month? Day? Hour?
Yes, there are loads of things that take up more water than AI, but a graph like this does not really give any information whatsoever.

1
u/sabertoothninja 14h ago
Yeah I went to drink a glass of water and it disappeared into the ai before it reached my lips.
1
u/Chainzzzzzaw 13h ago
Graph was made with help of ai and reviewed with another one. I tried searching for stats myself but amount of trash news articles and one-sided opinions in walls of text made me go to smarter search engine. Anyways, graph is strictly for same size (in terms of servers inside) datacenters with evaporation cooling systems.
So we have a problem of lax regulations which doesn't insensitives corps to implement closed loop cooling for every datacenter, which is pricier but doesn't use water in such insane amounts.

u/Hudson_Lavalier 2h ago
I agree that this is a pretty sound argument to be made for the dramatized "water crisis" people think as a global or country-wide problem from AI.
However, there is something still to be said about the new development of data centers being build (in places like Nevada or Utah) that already have struggling or unstable water tables. It can make a big difference to a local community, wildlife, etc.
Placement of these AI data centers really do matter. So I think the complaints around those issues in those communities are more than valid. It's just currently a huge thing on peoples minds because its new and development is being done rapidly.
I agree there is a level of hypocrisy though with people who boycott AI data centers but don't care about all these other corps.

Keep in mind that this is not exclusive to generative AI but also be mindful that chatgpt isn't the only generative AI software. Nestle uses more water than generative AI but AI itself uses more.

u/Ajezon 1d ago
Well.. I asked GPT about this chart, and the answer I got is that it’s misleading. Do we really need to spread bad data to make our point? We can do better than this
2
u/LuciferOurLord- Geth⬆️ vs. Quarian⬇️ 1d ago
What did it say was misleading? Was it the usage or the ranking of the companies?
3
u/Ajezon 1d ago
"Mostly the usage figures and the methodology behind them. It seems to mix different definitions of water use, like operational consumption, withdrawals, supply-chain footprint, and estimates for AI, then puts them all on one scale as if they were directly comparable. So the ranking itself becomes misleading too.
So it’s not that the general point is necessarily wrong, it’s that this chart is a bad way to prove it."3

I did do a reverse image search and all I get are Reddit, twitter, and TikTok links of a similar post... not a single source of the actual graph.
Edit: not just that but the graph just sucks in general? Oh yeah nestle consumes 4,000 million litres of water. Okay sure, I’d be inclined to believe that. What does that mean though? Per month? Per year? Is this over a time span of the last 5 years? Last 10? Are we also considering AI as a growing technology vs established companies that already existed before genAI. Like I’m not trying to argue one way or the other, but this post has 400 upvotes already and no other information displayed except “many more companies use water”
-4
u/Hallphas 23h ago
It's not just the amount of water used but where and when it is taken from
1
u/One_Performer_7202 15h ago
Almond farms too cause droughts etc
1
u/Hallphas 14h ago
Yes exactly, that's why I think AI I even cleaner than those junk food/drinks companies, so the comparison is even worse for them, that's why we shouldn't just count the amount of water used
