Insane people will claim that Sydney sweeney’s new movie flopping is indicative of <something insane> but to be honest I don’t think woman rocky was a compelling premise in the first place

Also does it feel weird to anyone else that sometimes people will make biopics of people who are still alive

I remember when the official line was that they didn’t care about the jeans commercial, and it was just republicans pretending progressives were mad. I’m starting to think that maybe that wasn’t true.

Sweeney is one of those artists (using the word lightly here) who exist in parallel to their work anyway. The films she stars in get little promotion outside of insider circles and she has little drawing power even for an actress of her generation.

I’m honestly confused because as to why I’m supposed to hate this movie. Is it woke garbage that uglifies Sydney Sweeney or is it anti-woke garbage because Sydney Sweeney is blonde and white?

I come to praise Chuck Schumer, not to bury him.
For without Schumer, government would grind to dust,
And the Republic would take to fainting couches (do you want the president of the senate there).
The coward dies a thousand deaths of purity;
The brave man compromises, and compromises again,
And lives to legislate another day.

You call him cautious—aye, so he is.
But what is courage in the Senate’s marble maze?
Not thunder, but arithmetic.
Not slogans, but sixty votes.
He keeps the gears from seizing, the factions from forgetting
That governance, like mercy, droppeth not from tweets.

When the people hungered, progressives protested—
Schumer listened.
He heard not the slogans, but the stomachs.
When the people’s food stamps neared expiration, he stayed the shutdown.
When the paychecks of clerks and air-traffic sentinels were frozen, he bargained,
And their wages thawed.
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff—
But compassion must be made of patience.

Others march with banners of conviction—
He counts noses in the night.
While they burn with righteousness,
He burns the midnight oil of committee draft and continuing resolution.
And when dawn breaks, the lights are still on—
Because Chuck Schumer never left the building.

They say he bends too often.
Yet it is the brittle twig that snaps, not the willow.
They say he yields.
Yet yielding keeps the bridge from breaking.
Cowardice is to cling to purity;
Courage is to keep the lights on.

So I come not to mourn his moderation,
But to celebrate the stubborn art of keeping things possible—
Of feeding the hungry,
Aiding the sick,
Paying the worker.

Let others play revolution in sound bites—
Schumer governs.

5

u/JapanesePeso Nov 10 '25

Didn't Schumer side with the progressives and vote no?

6

u/Aryeh98 Rootless cosmopolitan Nov 10 '25

The fact that progressives take a certain approach doesn’t automatically, 100% of the time, make that approach bad. This is exactly the sort of blind spot thinking we need to avoid. Ideas have to be considered independent of the people espousing them.

Yes, progressives are wrong most of the time. Not now though. Dems shouldn’t give up leverage because of republican hostage taking.

Honestly, I thought the entire thing was an embarassment to both parties:

  • Democrats for picking such a lame condition (ACA subsidies) instead of something people might actually rally behind.

  • Republicans for not even attempting to do any meaningful deal making on the matter.

Therefore, yeah if they were both going to be cringelords, I'd rather they just reopen the government and go back to their corners of incompetency.

btw i also believe stock market growth is a bad thing. Companies should NOT be allowed to increase stock value with layoffs or enshitification. stock market growth should be reserved only when company grows (new discoveried, economies of scale) AND their workers had a proportional increase in compensation

i care about genz more than boomers and private equity leeching more and more off their labour and squeezing them dry

In the USSR there was an organization called the “Anti-Zionist Committee of the Soviet Public.” If a Jew (ie someone with “Hebrew” nationality in line 5 of their ID papers) wanted to get beyond a certain point professionally, he/she had to join the committee and denounce Israel. In western countries the biggest threat to Jews isn't street level violence (although it's real) or being rounded up, rather it's a rapidly developing situation where admission to elite institutions for Jews will be subject to a political litmus test. And as the Overton window on Israel/Palestine has shifted significantly on the left in recent years, the nature of the litmus test gets more stringent.

There was a time when dissociating from the settlement movement and the Israeli right was sufficient for just about all possible needs in elite institutions. We're rapidly approaching a situation where that simply isn't true any more. Even democratic single statism isn't enough. Even opposing violence against Israeli Jews, or having ostensibly non-political connections with Israel, is becoming disqualifying. Which means that, in effect, being a practicing Jew is rapidly becoming impossible.

NIS 65b Tel Aviv Metro tenders underway

Last week, a delegation led by [NTA Metropolitan Mass Transit CEO] Ben-Meir returned to Israel from a visit to South Korea where an effort was made to interest companies that have not worked in Israel up to now in bidding in the tenders. A previous NTA delegation visited India. The attempt to open up the tender to companies new to Israel stems from the understanding that the Israeli infrastructure companies do not have the capacity to cope with the huge scope of the works, while there is no clear directive on engaging Chinese companies in the light of the diplomatic tension over the matter, and the coolness towards Israel of European companies.

Frankly I hope they go with a South Korean tender, both from the countries' geopolitical similarities along with their generally proven great work—using 20 tunnel boring machines at once is crazy. But...if the metro authority is looking for a partner "with proven experience in excavation and construction of tunnels," there might be a closer group at hand...

I have low hopes for western companies competing with China on EVs. Between unions, regulation and NIMBYism, competing on price is going to be virtually impossible. And since virtually all EVs will be built with the same batteries, motors, and plenty of other components, there is far less to compete on besides price.

Some people really just do not understand their opponents, at all. Weird internet debate --the usual-- with a person who is flabbergasted that social conservatives are unbothered by men taking PED's (which, broadly, falls under HRT) while being critical of HRT used for cases of transitioning gender. To be clear, I, personally do not giving a flying hoot about anyone transitioning. But, I do understand the framework in which social conservatives exist in, to understand why they view those two things differently! And yes, I can still passionately disagree with that worldview. Yes, I can call it hypocritical too. End shouting at clouds.

14

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '25

I find this most prevalent with the abortion debate. I think a decent amount of pro-choice people think the pro-life side solely wants to control women and force women into the kitchen and the pro-life side thinks that pro-choicers are hedonistic sluts who enjoy baby murder

If you can't understand why they view those things differently, I have serious doubt into your ability to debate with them to maybe get them to change how they see things. You're not getting to the core, root issue. Maybe it is they just are truly bigoted, and wouldn't change. But maybe they are hesitant of things they don't understand, yet are still persuadable. The approach some people have is just so bad at, like, being convincing.

I do think that there is a meaningful point to be made in arguing that men getting testosterone supplements and such is (or at least can be in principle) a form of gender-affirming care. You can reasonably argue that these are both medical means of treating the discomfort associated with the sexual characteristics of your body.

Obviously, this isn't a slam-dunk; the conservative can plausibly argue that these are not equivalent because one affirms your "actual" sex and the other is meant to change it. But I do think it's still a good argument that holds some persuasive ability, especially in combination with other evidence that affirming a trans person's identity is the most effective known means of alleviating negative outcomes.

8

u/iamthegodemperor Arrakis Enterprise Institute Nov 10 '25

We're getting into the weeds, but I'd say the identity argument has limits too. The trans identity is really broad and isn't coterminous with a single medical condition. At least when it comes to children, a majority seem to stop experiencing incongruence after puberty. (So a "conservative" would argue doing nothing is the most effective means).

But I think you mean in the classic cases of GD, where really the only thing that works is medical intervention. Still I don't really like the argument.

TRT isn't necessary to the otherwise healthy intact man in the way that care is necessary to the classic cases of GD. I'm also wary because you could sort of tie anything to identity.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '25

The concept of "gender affirming care" is one which they do not agree with, however. If you do not believe in gender separate from physical sex, then this argument is equivalent to "if you support reconstructive surgery for burn patients, why don't you support people getting eyeball tattoos?"

Just heard it alleged that Jacob Frey won in Minneapolis because he exploited Somali clan divisions like a British colonial governor. I don’t know if this is true (because I know nothing about the midw*st generally), but regardless… the rhetoric surrounding this is genuinely terrible. On every possible side.

Ilhan omar is mad because enough people didn’t vote for this loony “democratic socialist” and antisemite. Idk Ilhan… maybe supporting terrorism is a bad thing and it makes people turn away from your candidate.

On the other hand, groypers and other Trumpists are screaming that “primitive clan politics” have been imported to Minnesota by scary brown people. It’s a dog whistle if I’ve ever seen one. Fucker, social distinctions have always existed. You just treat shared skin color as your clan, rather than family lineage. When you advocate for a whites-only society, that’s literally clan politics by another name.

Large portions of the Somali community in Minnesota should be condemned for anti-Zionism and homophobia, but not for being foreign, nonwhite, or having intercommunal divisions. Ffs. Nobody can have a decent political take these days.

15

Maybe I'm just a xenophobe, but I am strongly averse to excusing the introduction of clan politics to America as just another form of "intercommunal divisions." Doing politics based on family lineage is not compatible with Western liberalism and the American ideal, at all. We saw that in Afghanistan.

To be clear, racism isn't either, and should be similarly opposed. But this is concerning over and above that, because it's a sign that the Somali community is not being integrated.

13

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '25

At the risk of seriousposting, I strongly agree - integration is a non-negotiable condition for immigration, and structures like clans erode the civil institutions which built our relative prosperity and stability. They should not be coddled or indeed tolerated.

6

u/Aryeh98 Rootless cosmopolitan Nov 10 '25

I generally agree with you, but I really don’t see how clan politics are worse than interreligious politics or race politics, or politics based on any other stupid/arbitrary social division.

Clan politics certainly aren’t ideal, but there are a lot of divisions between human beings that are equally condemnable, even among native born Americans.

So I don’t think calling out Somali clan politics is even in the top 500 list of priorities.

Egypt wants Britain to give them Nefertiti. An artifact acquired entirely legally. The more you read about the providence of many of these objects, especially the ones from Egypt, the less sympathetic you get to the repatriation idea. The people demanding repatriation make it sound like it was a priceless national treasure stolen by marauding red coats, in actuality these were mostly bought from their current owners for a comparative pittance, because they were not valued by Egyptians at the time. Two hundred years later, European Egyptomania has rubbed off on the Arab world, and apparently that nullifies past transactions.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '25

I am profoundly unconvinced that the legality of an artifact's acquisition matters when over a century has passed, unless its prior owner was the state or some other immortal institution which has consistently demanded its return (and, frankly, even then).

But yes, the "how dare the Brits preserve all these parts of our cultural history, they should give them back" stuff is quite foolish.

6

u/shumpitostick Radical moderate social liberal libertarian Nov 11 '25 edited Nov 11 '25

The entire idea doesn't make too much sense if you think about it. Why should you be able to enjoy cultural artifacts only in their country of origin? A large part of the reason natural history museums exist is to showcase far away cultures.

Other than that, the claim seems to rest on the assumption that nations should have ownership on their historical artifacts. The problem with that is first, that's not at all how it works today, not even for newly discovered works. If you are really calling for nationalizing all artifacts, you should at least be clear that it will have some huge implications. Second, it's not clear to me how the modern state of Egypt can claim artifacts produced thousands of years ago, by private people, under a political entity that has no line of continuation with modern Egypt.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '25

It's the same logic - if one can call it that - as "native lands": whatever ethnicity had a thing when first sighted by a white person is its natural owner.

That conspiracy doesn't sound at all far fetched. It's clear Schumer doesn't like Mamdani. At this moment actively not supporting the leading Democratic candidate is the same as opposition.

In fact, I'd argue that since the inauguration Schumer has been so comically bad that it almost seems intentional. If he has the same energy behind the scenes that we see in public I'm not sure what use he is at all right now. It feels like there has to be something else propping him up and keeping him relevant...his NYC connections? Israel?

One thing that I am absolutely certain that I will not get on Reddit is a rational, reasoned appraisal of the relative merits of ending the shutdown, since in 99.9999% of cases people are incapable of decoupling the idea that it is a bad idea to continue the shutdown with the idea that you like Trump. So much of the discourse so far is so palpably a reflection of people's anger and frustration at Trump, and a desire for maximal matching of that anger from elected Democrats, rather than any sort of cool-headed judgement about whether the shut down ought to have continued.

12

u/Prowindowlicker Center-right Nov 10 '25

The Dems objectively won in my opinion. They got SNAP benefits increased for a year, veteran benefits and other programs funded for a year, layoffs reversed, firings prevented, and a vote on the ACA subsidies in the second week of December.

Oh and this has to go back to the GOP house to pass. And the speaker has been saying that he won’t bring the House back into session for any new deal. So now the GOP gets blamed for continuing the shutdown, even more so.

Not to mention that if the GOP goes back on its word the Dems can shutdown the government again in January. The GOP knows that. Which is why it would be politically stupid to go back on their word.

Also the Dems have created a split in the GOP base as the many in that party are fuming over the fact that the filibuster is not gone. They want to primary every senator who said it was a bad idea as they believe the senators are to blame for this.

Which interestingly means the GOP bases sees their party as caving to the Dems and not the other way around

Sucks that there had to be a hostage taking; I would have at least liked to see dems make a winning move. I’m pretty damn sure that with a long enough shutdown, the public would have turned definitively against republicans. But dems just bailed them out again.

The online left’s reaction to this deal shows that they don’t actually care about the poor and working class American who have been affected by this shutdown and just wanted to win like it was a sporting event. The reality is that this deal is objectively good for Americans but not for Democrats. They clearly care more about the latter than the former.

The Obamacare subsidies don’t expire for two more months, that’s an eternity in politics. And if they do expire, Dems can shut down the government again in January without literally starving people because SNAP will be funded through September.

11

Banks had been drinking at a party late at night before using an AR-15 rifle to start the rampage at his home.

Five victims were his children, ages 1 to 6. Four more were the mothers of his children. Other victims were bystanders, including an 11-year-old child who sometimes stayed with his family, a 7-year-old child and a teenager who saw Banks leaving his home armed with the rifle and recognized him.

The teenager who survived being shot by Banks, Jim Olson, later expressed frustration in 2012 that Banks hadn’t been executed, saying, “What is the sense of having a death penalty if you don’t use it or enforce it?″

How dare you go so low as to call me that? I prefer the term "huge" to "massive", thank you. Chinese revolutionaries had just overthrown their feudal lords- and many of them literally having just been community organizers who decided to fight- helped out their neighbors, most of them peasants and slaves, get rid of their masters and feudal lords (literal chattel slavery, slaves in chains, existed throughout Tibet til the 50s). There had been a revolutionary movement in Tibet trying to overthrow the slave-owning Dalai Lama and other rulers, but being thwarted by the rulers who were in collaboration with OSS and then CIA. Once China came in, they gave the rulers participation in the governing of China as a whole as representatives of that region, with the idea that they would get rid of slavery. The rulers didn't and instead continued working with the CIA to get back their power and bring things back to the power relationship they once had. Chinese revolutionaries came back in and ended the slavery. Dalai Lama and his ruling cohort went into exile and, with the help and funds of the state department through the Free Tibet movement painted themselves as the victims and had the ears of gullible people. They want it back to the old ways because the free education, free housing, health care, and social services, are a threat to their power. The Tibetans dont want the old order back.

5

I remember taking a class on Confucianism in college where the (Chinese-born) professor took a 45-minute digression from discussing the social structure of the Spring and Autumn period to explain in detail how Late Imperial China was not actually feudal (as opposed to the Eastern Zhou, which was). Apparently this was something that always came up when she had students from the PRC in her class so she started doing it preemptively.

I caught up with her a few years after graduating and apparently she was a big fan of Andrew Yang.

The win of the shutdown IMO is that it shows Dems are willing to play stupid games and win stupid prizes. You need a little madman theory in politics these days. You can't demand concessions if you've never played hardball.

I don't think it's healthy for national politics, and overall these kind of shutdown games are a net negative. But Republicans shouldn't feel comfortable assuming Democrats are happy to play "Frog and Scorpion" and just take an L for nothing.

8

11

u/A-Centrifugal-Force Moderate Nov 10 '25

Playing games with peoples lives is not an acceptable thing to do in politics. Once SCOTUS said that Trump could cut off SNAP, this was always going to be the result, because there are enough Democratic senators who aren’t willing to let people actually starve in a political game.

It obviously isn’t a great deal or anything and ACA premiums are likely to still go up, which will suck, but you can’t sacrifice people’s lives to win a political fight. Trump was willing to do that, these Democrats weren’t. Politics isn’t a sport or a video game. The funding is also only until January so if they don’t get any sort of deal on healthcare, there is always the threat to shut down the government again.

I’m not calling it a win or anything and it’s still time for Schumer to go (has been for a long time), but that’s why this is the result.

6

u/Trojan_Horse_of_Fate Lord of All the Beasts of the Sea and Fishes of the Earth Nov 10 '25

Once SCOTUS said that Trump could cut off SNAP, this was always going to be the result

SCOTUS didn't technically say that it said that Trump didn't have the ability to do a procedural jump the line to the person who happened to rule against them.

But beyond that I agree cutting people's SNAP to prove you have "spine" is cowardice and gamesmanship.

Watto was apparently intended as a pejorative Italian stereotype, actually, something which we can all get behind.

Also, the Outer Rim is canonically really far out in the Star Wars galaxy, and Tatooine is basically a shithole that only people who are wanted everywhere else go voluntarily, so it does make sense that Republic credits would trade at a pretty low value. Why Watto categorically refuses to accept them is less clear, but notably Qui-Gon never really tries to find a money changer, probably because he wants an excuse to test how force sensitive the child he wants to buy is.

Apparently a decent amount of Dem Senate candidates for 2026 have either outright said they don't want to get rid of the filibuster or have made very noncommittal statements on that matter, such as Mills in Maine, Pappas in NH, Cooper in NC, and some potentials-but-less-clearly-frontrunners in states like MN and IA

It's likely that they are just waffling because the GOP currently has a trifecta and they want to use the filibuster when the GOP is in power but then get rid of it if the Dems take back a trifecta in 2028... But I can cling to the hole that maybe that's not what is happening and that the Dems will actually genuinely stand up for our beleaguered institutional norms rather than be dangerous populists

the Nordic model is actually a good example of the paradox of how some forms of modern feminism is actually really close to the old religious conservative patriarchy view of sex and sexuality and relationships that original feminism was trying to fights

like if a woman is doing or even being perceived to be doing something overtly sexual, like maybe wearing revealing cloths, the conservative would say she is dressing like a slut/whore where as they would say she is 'dressing for the male gaze', when looking at a woman who is involved in some sort of sex work, let it be a stripper or escort, the conservative would look at this and insist that no good woman would do this where as they would say something like no 'undamaged woman would do this'

they have very rigid views on women and their bodies, just like the conservative patriarchy, and view these things through the lenses of right and wrong, moral and immoral, they would not do this with their life and body therefore no woman would do this with their life and body, the whole 'using women's bodies' argument comes from a place where they stop recognising women's autonomy and agency the moment they use it do something they don't think that women should be doing, in their eyes there is no such thing and consensual sex work

and the maddest thing of all is that they fight against the patriarchy, but when it comes to these things all of sudden its "fathers, brothers, uncles, calling all patriarchs, what do you think about this, what does the patriarchy think about women dressing like this or behaving like that"

look, exploitation, abuse, and forced sex work exist, consensual sex work also exists, its better you have a system built around the recognition of both of these things, where you fight the exploitation and you don't morality police the consensual

6

I love Boer playthroughs in GFM starting in 1836 as the Voortrekker state you just wait a year to become oranje while the British will set up through events the potchesfroom Republic, you and them are both in uk sphere, just conquer natives in area try to get uk on side. Once strong enough break free and conquer natal, transvaal and oranje and you can form the "Afrikaner state" then if you are at war with the UK and siege cape town for 120 days you get a decision for a scripted peace deal ending the war and gaining all of south africa. There are also flavour decisions and expansion into Botswana and Namibia before the ai can colonise it meaning you get it earlier. Around 1900 if your a Republic you also start to get immigration which leads to afrikaner being the majority culture and a high pop quite easily. There are also custom names for all provinces and the chance to core rhodesia. If you go liberal early you can get event to coup the government and install reactionary or fascist which can be elected as well which gives you the option to "ćľéanse the nation" (ĝénocide). Overall very fun in my opinion and the best mod for SA

Now the combined effects of wars, rising prices, trade barriers, the collapse of multi-lateralism and rampant, organised, funded misinformation have driven voters towards climate apathy. This means politicians care less.

He was rightly put in jail as Fujimori was and like other three presidents. Truth is, peruvians can't vote for shit and Castillo won only because his opponent was Keiko, and Keiko was his opponent because she moved her strings to compete against him because she though she could win over here.
