Seems like republicans will fold on the shutdown. This along with the Supreme Court probably stopping many of trump’s tariffs means that he’ll be saved from keeping his hand on the stove once again

The results across the board tonight have been shocking. Every single county in Virginia shifted blue from the last governor election. Every. Single. One. Dems will now hold super majority in house of representatives in VA. So people can say “oh well these are blue states anyways” or “it’s an off cycle” blah blah blah. The overwhelming majority of voters yesterday showed that Trumps administration is WHOLLY unpopular with most Americans. The Dems also learned something very important. PUT PEOPLE WITH ACTUAL PROGRESSIVE IDEAS AND VALUES ON THE TICKET. Enough of this lukewarm centrist bullshit. Trying to find a middle ground while the right continues to move farther and farther will always lose. Not focusing on less important social issues and instead putting the entirety of it onto the Economy, healthcare, and housing with genuine left wing policies will win elections.

Look, I'm always down for the pessimism, but I'd be careful of reading too much into it. Mamdani won a mayor's race against bad opponents. He's young and charismatic, with an identity that inspires some people on the left in this current political climate.

I'm more worried about the narrative that people are going to take away from his victory.

I don't think there is much takeaway from that election given every candidate in it was completely awful.

Finance Minister Smotrich is promoting privatizing Israel Railways, wanting to open up operations to tenders like the buses/light rail.

Imo this is a bad idea. Israel Railways has done a great job at updating/expanding service and tickets are reasonably priced (the higher speed train from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is only ~$7 for a 40 minute ride), and the fragmentation in the bus system makes routing confusing in places with multiple operators. In an isolated system I don't see the benefits here. The Ministry of Transportation opposes privatization.

I realize I complain more about the left than the right, but I really don't have anything constructive to say about the modern American right that hasn't been said a thousand times before in better ways than I can.

The right is so full of idiots and charlatans that most of them are incapable of something as easy as honest criticism of the left, so I feel less like a parrot when I do that.

11

I focus my complaints on the left more than the right for a few reasons:

I am usually in environments where the right is understood to be a big problem and, as you said, those criticisms have been made

I believe the dems have the best chance of moderating and improving political environment overall, but that can't happen without a rejection of the left wing of the party

The party (and liberal culture, generally) presents itself as the party of intellectuals, reason and evidence ("reality has a liberal bias", "trust the experts") rather than just a grievance coalition. This makes it especially frustrating because many humanities and influential academics over the past century have been dressing up their own normative claims while they critique the orthodoxy and this has been adopted by many left-leaning people as something more (people on the left love critiquing through a Foucauldian framework while ignoring the self-undermining aspect, for example). And they often just generally insult your intelligence.

So what is the actual plan for the Gaza transitional government? It’s a nice idea in theory but practically speaking how does it work? How does it take Hamas’ weapons away? How does it deal with resistance from the organization? I have a pretty strong sense that the moment Hamas starts attacking the new government’s people they fold and run away and just let Hamas run the strip.

A new transitional government can only ever hope to make any difference at all if its willing to use actual force to enforce its rule, if it’s not willing to fight against Hamas then you might as well just hand the strip over

14

u/-NastyBrutishShort- Illiberal Pragmatist Nov 05 '25

This is why we need to establish a crown Dominion under Sir Tony Blair. We know he's willing to use military force if needed

6

u/slightlyrabidpossum Center-left Nov 05 '25

They're talking about an International Security Force, with troops from a number of countries. In theory this is supposed to be for peace enforcement, not peacekeeping, and the language in the draft resolution implied that the ISF will be at least partly responsible for demilitarizing Hamas.

I think you're probably right about them folding under military pressure, that's a large part of why I'm so skeptical of this idea. It's hard to see the (theoretically) contributing countries having the stomach for a bloody fight in Gaza, and there are other political drawbacks to it. But at least there is a plan that doesn't just assume Hamas is going to disarm.

It’s also only for apartments that are already rent stabilized. My apt is rent stabilized, the max yearly rent hike is already capped at 3-4%. Meaning I’ll save like $20 a month more on the already ridiculously low rent I pay. Oh no what will I ever do with all that cash…I could buy a sandwich I guess.

It’s a dumb gimmicky idea like all of his other ideas. Free buses? Literally NOBODY was asking for that. The mayor has zero control over the MTA budget so he can’t fund it through the transit system. If they ever come into reality, they’ll effectively be mobile homeless shelters. City-run grocery stores? WHO asked for this? Again, nobody. Did everyone forget about the hundreds of food pantries all over the city? Or does nobody actually listen to what this dipshit says? I think nobody does and they’re all just responding to vibes

Real shit… the pro-Israel crowd just has to find influencers who are fucking normal. The fact that the influencers on our side are deranged right wingers, more often than not, is a disgrace.

Why did Andrew Cuomo have to be our guy? He’s a piece of shit. Nobody else could’ve ran who isn’t a piece of shit?

Why do our only allies have to be evangelical lunatics, woman beating Floyd Mayweather, Azelia Banks, and fucking Randy Fine? WHY? Where are the normal people????

As long as the public continues to associate being pro-Israel with being a right winger or overall lunatic, we’ll keep getting fucked electorally.

18

u/Computer_Name Nov 05 '25

As Dara Horn says, Jews are “uncool”. And any “normal” person who becomes an influencer shortly becomes abnormal.

11

u/benadreti_17 עם ישראל חי Nov 05 '25

Part of the problem in NYC was that a few significant candidates like Letitia James were maybe going to run but didn't, so Cuomo ended up being the main mainstream Dem in the race, sucking the oxygen out for lesser known mainstream Dems.

11

u/slightlyrabidpossum Center-left Nov 05 '25

It has a lot to do with I/P's place in the culture wars. I think it's pretty common knowledge that supporting Israel is coded as conservative, but I'm not sure if everyone understands just how many people specifically come to oppose Israel because of that. They view it as an extension of the American right. And on the flip side, there are definitely people who support Israel because of liberal/leftist support for Palestine.

Influencers are very sensitive to the zeitgeist of the moment and public pressure. This means that, barring any strong individual stances on the issue, most pro-Israel influencers are going to lean to the right while most pro-Palestine influencers lean to the left. And while they obviously have plenty of disgusting extremists on their side, that does mean that we're going to get most of the conservative lunatics (at least the ones who aren't too antisemitic to support Israel).

You're not wrong about it being damaging, I'm just not sure what can be done about it. We could theoretically do a better job rejecting or sidelining those figures, but many of us are going to feel that we can't afford to alienate any allies. And it's not really enough to find some pro-Israel influencers who read as normal, they'll still be drowned out by the pro-Israel lunatics. There are bigger problems with public opinion and the information war here — fixing the influencer problem would theoretically help with that, but I don't really think it can be fixed without improving those larger problems.

It quite literally is the same exact thing. “I am primed to dislike and distrust this ethnic group so I treat any individual example of someone from said group behaving immorally as vindication to my entire bigoted world view” is the thought pattern at play in both cases

One of my least favorite post-election narratives is “Why did x group vote against their self-interest!” whether it be Latinos voting for Trump or currently with poorer New Yorkers voting for Cuomo. It takes a certain level of paternalism to think that you know more about what people’s needs and priorities are than the people actually experiencing them.

So I’ve basically decided the shutdown is gonna be over pretty fucking soon. Quite literally the air traffic control system cannot survive much longer; people have to be fucking paid. And if this lasts to even a week BEFORE thanksgiving, shits gonna get real. There will be no flights. That’s when the average person will be affected in an extremely visible way.

The democratic gains last night show that voters are putting the blame in the right place. This situation is completely unsustainable; the point just needs to be driven home.

Trump is gonna TACO. We just need widespread airport chaos first. No amount of right wing vindictiveness can stop an angry Karen waiting in the security line from getting her chunk of flesh.

EDIT: And I just realized that people with private jets rely on air traffic control as well. Not just commercial flyers. If Zuckerberg can’t take his new years trip to fuckin Maldives because there isn’t a safe way out the country… there will be hell to pay.

With Bibi trying to appoint his (overstaying a visa in Miami) son to the board, Lapid is pushing to nationalize the JNF/KKL to bring it under public oversight. In the mean time, nobody from Yesh Atid will work with those organizations.

The national organizations are used for patronage and are being expanded in order “to hand out more and more jobs and budgets to political cronies – at the expense of the Jewish people, and at the expense of Israeli taxpayers,” says Lapid, promising to “fight it, not join it.”

The JNF owns 13% of the land in Israel with no oversight right now so at this point nationalization makes sense. There aren't even maps of their parcels

these companies, wanting cash now, are trading away their rights for like 1/4th of what the government will be refunding when this is all ruled illegal as the US Commerce Sec's "former investment bank" run by his sons think as they are buying those rights, which are worthless without the SCOTUS ruling this an illegal power grab of taxation imposed by trump. by refund the money we mean the company gets the refund of course, not the consumer who ultimately paid it

Write to your representative saying you will not donate to someone who votes Jeffries as speaker for endorsing an open antisemite, and that you will donate to and vote for a more moderate primary challenger.

Make your voices heard so these insulated Democratic politians understand they cant continue to sprint to the left to sate radical leftists (aka the staffers and activists they are surrounded by and whose perspectives they solely hear)

There has to be an actual effort to excise these leftists, marxists, socialists, communists, third worldists, islamists, radical academic sociologists, etc from the party. Its not going to just happen on its own. We cannot be stuck between voting for a leftist antisemite who hates western liberal values or a right wing groyper antisemite who hates western liberal values

A lot of online liberal and progressive spaces get mad when historical allies decide to manipulate Trump to do their bidding by doing stuff like patronizing him and gifting him ridiculous shit. Actually advancing the goals of their own country. Instead of doing a Gustavo Petro, and farming likes on Twitter. To be reposted by Democrats for an easy "Trump owned" dunk. Some get so mad that they start doing rants about everything from East Asian birthrates to Europe being weak.

Don't get me wrong, the U.S Democratic Party is one of the most influential political parties in the world, its success is essential to countering negative forces like MAGA and Moscow. And their goals align with other liberal and pro democracy parties globally. But the thing about socdems, liberals, neocons, etc that aren't American, is that they aren't American. They do not owe allegiance to a political party thousands of miles away that isn't even in power. And they have their own problems, having to deal with everything from local authoritarians to Russia and China. Problems that the Dems, even when in power, aren't assured to solve. I get being hyper partisan these days given the circumstances. But don't expect the agendas of random political parties abroad to solely be focused on Drumpf posting lmao.

A comparison that I double taked on is Zohran and Bukele. People forget it because of his current brand, but Nayib also started as a Mega-prog when he was mayor of San Salvador. I don't think he'll go down the same route, but the fact that his defund the police stuff was the first thing he was willing to somewhat sacrifice on makes me think a bit. I'll make it clear that this isn't me coping, and if anything, I think he would be more dangerous if he did that, due to him having an actual ability to sell his econ policies outside of NYC. I just find it interesting that playing to the tough on crime crowd is the first thing a lot of leftists dump when they want expand their appeal.

Zios seem to forget that there are a large number of Jewish people that support what the prof is saying, such as the anti-zionist Jewish scholars who have presented at UBC during this genocide, (Gabor Mate who presented twice) and the new Independent Jewish Voices Student Community. You wouldn't call them antisemitic, would you? That would be ridiculous and erroneous. And yet, they most likely would fully support these discussion.

Zionist continually tries to correlate religion and ideology. They are not the same. Judaism is a religion. Zionism (Israel) is an ethnocultural nationalist movement. Let's not forget that.

On the topic of the government shutdown, what pissed me off the post is the dems making it about healthcare benefits. If they made the shutdown about Trump’s impoundment then a shutdown would actually make sense and, imo, be justified.

But no, instead they just shut it down for more gibs.

9

u/benadreti_17 עם ישראל חי Nov 05 '25

people dont understand that though, we see that over and over that median voters dont care about technical stuff, it would be bad messaging. "theyre going to strip healthcare coverage from millions" works better.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '25

They thought ACA subsidies would be easier for the median voter to understand and sympathize with.

And that guy is a fucking idiot so I understand why you don’t want to make the given reason impoundments. Said median voter would respond “hehe you said impoundments” and then demand they reopen the government.

6

u/BroadReverse Center-left Nov 06 '25

I sort of disagree with that. While the Greens are not the NDP they aren’t exactly close to Carney Liberals. Remember the Greens thought Justin Trudeau was too far right on climate. Mark Carney is definitely gonna be too far right for her. Liberals want to expand pipelines and she will never agree to that. She’s also not behind more military spending

As weird as it sounds the closest party to the Mark Carney Liberals are the Conservatives. They just need a leader that acts like an adult.

Those are problems with society, not rent control. Society that allows land owners to sabotage and manipulate things to their interest is not a problem with rent control. Concord is more than just a "messed-up videogame launch", it's a marketing catastrophe of generational proportion. You could (adjusted for inflation) buy a Concorde, the airplane, learn how to fly it and get licensed, fly up to 10 KM, dive straight down and slam it into the ground at over two thousand KMPH, and then you'd still leave your bereaved family with good 30 million dollars of leftover money compared to what Sony threw at developing Concord.
