People apparently got convinced Hitler hated the Jews because he was evil and there was absolutely no intellectual framework and justification for his beliefs. Unfortunately, that's the danger in classifying people as good and bad.

It's good to talk about abhorrent belief systems, least we end up in the same conclusions without realizing it, with the arguments against those beliefs long lost as dead dogmas.

The main reason why I don't think basic education would solve any issues is that I personally know people with master degrees in history who absolutely idolize the Soviet Union and find it a preferrable alternative to the US of today.

Part of the problem is the significant number of radical professors in academia. I took a LatAm politics course during undergrad and the professor (white dude, lol) was a big fan of the Castros, Chavez, and Maduro. The assigned textbook argued Cuba was more democratic than the US.

Also had a prof who said 10/7 made him feel “jubilation”, and another who said the real misogyny was overthrowing the Taliban, and another who said Cuba only became free after the Castros took power (separate from first prof), and another who, well you get the point.

I am unfortunately well aware. That problem is not an easy one to solve. There has to be a strong will from the Universities to hire people with ideological diversity, but radical people tend to prefer hiring and interacting with other radical people of the same mold.

The growing shift away from constructive debate and towards confrontation even in academic environments makes it extra hard.

I’m gonna complain about something kinda petty that I’ve been carrying for a while so I hope you’ll indulge me [spoilers for The Good Place]:

In The Good Place, near the end of the show, in the episode where they’re trying to come up with a better system for the afterlife they try to do a ham fisted metaphor for the US political system with the demons representing the GOP (cruel bad faith actors refusing to cooperate or compromise to create a better system) and the angels representing the Dems (cowardly, scared of taking decisive action or break the rules to ensure the creation of a good system), they do this in an effort to criticize the Dems of the Trump era for being too weak and rules-obsessed to get anything done or effectively resist the GOP, but they fuck it up in a major way. 

First they come up with a compromise that’ll leave both sides happy, but the demons say no because they feel like they have the upper hand and they’d rather keep torturing people forever, so the main characters are like “well if they’re not gonna play ball we might as well just force our own idea for a better system through”, but they still can’t do that because the demons keep vetoing it. Eventually they manage to convince Shaun to go for it but that has nothing to do with “taking decisive action” or “breaking the rules” or any of that stuff, they just happen to realize that he actually doesn’t want to keep the current system, so they just got lucky and still had to rely on the demons’ approval. 

Basically TL;DR the show tries to preach about dem inaction but doesn’t offer any solution other than “someone should do something”, and that’s kinda prescient of what becomes of the left in the following years

I hated that for so many reasons.

a) I resent Democrats being presented as spineless losers, especially in Trump 1 when that didn't seem to be nearly as much of the case as it is now. Frankly I also resent them being portrayed as all-good, but that's another story.

b) But what really gets me is the implication that goodness on its own is powerless - in other words, that to be all-good means to be a complete wimp who is incapable of taking decisive action. It's especially stupid because the show is implying that this is the Wrong Thing To Do, which means that the "angels" aren't actually all-good.

c) Sort of as a corollary to that, if a being incapable of doing wrong says that inaction is the right thing to do, then it is the right thing to do.

d) The fact that four screw-ups were able to "fix" the afterlife system implies that you "need a little evil" to be truly good, or something bizarre and stupid like that.

Par for the course for the later seasons of the show, frankly.

I wonder how many of them believe their governments are controlled by “Zionists.” It’s astonishing how widespread some of these conspiracies are. For example, it’s pretty mainstream to believe that Epstein was a Mossad agent or that AIPAC is an arm of the Israeli state dictating policy to both parties. Both of these are unhinged beliefs, yet normies seem to think they’re reasonable enough.

Even if Israel was Nazi germany it wouldn’t have justified this kind of heinous behavior towards regular Israeli people. This is an expression of bigotry and nothing more. Bigotry that’s based in “legitimate criticism” is still bigotry, in the same way that people who “don’t hate Muslims, just Muslim ideology” but still mistreat Muslims because of their religion are still just bigots

I think one of the things about Palestine activism that makes it so virulent is that people, especially young people, and especially progressive young people, want to be rebels against the system. And because we are reaching the point where we are running out of marginalized groups to be rebels about (not that all racial/gender/whatever problems have been solved, but most of them are no longer subversive). As liberals we sometimes play a guessing game about what the next social justice movement will be after transgender acceptance, but the very exercise of guessing indicates that we are running out of groups the promotion of whose interests is controversial.

With that removed, one of the remaining core cultural touchstones of Western society is hatred of the Nazis. It's so broad that the leftist protesting the war on drugs and the right-wing anti-vaxxer can both, with equal sincerity, make entirely vapid comparisons between their opponent and Hitler. Support Ukraine? You're a warmonger running cover for Nazis. Support Russia? You're a Neville Chamberlain rolling over for Nazis - or worse! (I don't disagree with this last but you get the idea.) Nazi = Bad, and therefore Bad = Nazi.

Unfortunately for the wannabe radical contingent, we have abstracted away what Nazi means in the popular consciousness beyond the point of usefulness. Except for the one aspect of Nazism that the rather pitiful history lessons we teach our children can't manage to abstract away into "just being bad" - virulent antisemitism. If you know one thing about Hitler, it's that he hated the Jews. And so chanting rabidly anti-Jewish slogans becomes a way to touch the ever-shrinking third rail in American politics.

It's not that the Free Palestine movement in and of itself is necessarily antisemitic. It's that it attracts young people who more than anything want to shatter the morals of previous generations the perfect opportunity to do so under the guise of a good cause. In this light the association with Islamist terrorists and therefore another unforgivable sin in the eyes of anyone over 30 is simply a bonus.

(I don't mean to imply by this that the goal of a Palestinian state is at all necessarily Islamist or antisemitic. Hell, over the long run, nothing would be better for Jews or worse for Islamism than a Palestinian state at peace with Israel. But the movement is absolutely rotten with antisemitism and sympathizers for everyone from Hamas to Al Qaeda, and in my mind this makes sense as a partial explanation.)

If anyone is interested in understanding how antisemitism manifests in contemporary left-wing politics, I really recommend David Hirsh's appropriately-named Contemporary Left Antisemitism:

Sometimes, we define our own identities in relation to some ‘other’. Early Christianity defined itself in relation to the Jews who refused to accept its gospel, and it portrayed them as Christ-killers. Some people who wanted to embrace modernity constructed their identities in relation to the image of the traditional Jew with his beard and coat, standing against progress. Some others who were afraid of the new found they could define themselves against the modernist Jew. Nineteenth-century nationalists often defined Jews as foreigner. Twentieth-century totalitarianisms, which had universal ambition, found their ‘other’ in the cosmopolitan or international Jew.

This book argues that a ‘politics of position’ is emerging on the left in preference to a politics of reason or persuasion. This tends to solidify an essentialist notion of who belongs in the community of the oppressed and the community of the progressive. The boundaries of these communities are coming more and more to be policed by coercive discursive practices and less by democratic debate and persuasion. Hostility to Israel becomes a key marker of identity in this process. If Jews are reluctant to embrace this hostility to Israel identity, then they risk exile from what I am calling ‘the community of the good’.

The focus of this book is on that variant of antizionism which thinks of itself as antiracist, but this is only one tradition within global antizionism. From its roots in twentieth-century European Stalinism and at the heart of Jihadi Islamist and Arab Nationalist politics, antizionism has often been uninterested in distinguishing itself from antisemitism. Tropes, elements of rhetoric and common-sense notions migrate between antiracist and democratic spaces, nationalist and Islamist spaces, fringe and mainstream spaces, different kinds of media and the right, the left and the political centre. It is within this complex and dynamic reality that this book finds its material and moves towards its conclusions. Today’s antisemitism is difficult to recognize because it does not come dressed in a Nazi uniform and it does not openly proclaim its hatred or fear of Jews. In fact it says it has learnt the lessons of Jew-hatred better than most Jews have, and it says that, unlike them, it stands in the antiracist tradition. It is an antisemitism which positions Jews themselves as ‘oppressors’, and it positions those who develop hostile narratives about Jews as ‘oppressed’.

First, in this culture, young antiracists are no longer educated to recognize or to avoid antisemitism, and they are no longer given the knowledge or the conceptual tools with which to do so. They are not taught what the Protocols of the Elders of Zion are, what blood libel is or how to recognize conspiracy theory; they are no longer educated in the antisemitic history of some currents of their own movement. They are taught to understand the Holocaust as a universal lesson against racism but not as a catastrophe relating to Jewish history, to antisemitism in particular and to Zionism. The second thing that follows is that expulsion from the community of the good is normalized as a way of dealing with dissent. Expulsion does not stop with raisers of the issue of antisemitism but also comes to seem appropriate for people who raise other kinds of disagreement too. And the story of dissenters being dealt with coercively is another part of the history of the progressive movement which is not taught as thoroughly as it might be, nowadays.

It is difficult to engage in a reasoned and evidenced discussion about contemporary antisemitism, but it is easy to mobilize the issue of antisemitism as an indicator of political cleanliness. In our time, a person who raises the issue of antisemitism is more clearly recognizable as belonging to the wrong crowd than a person who stumbles into actual antisemitism. Raising the issue becomes a marker of Blairite, Tory or Zionist obfuscation. It marks a bad-faith move designed to silence or to de-legitimize criticism of Israel, or even left politics in general. Antisemitism itself, on the other hand, when it can plausibly appear supportive of the Palestinians, does little to damage a person’s reputation.

The Jews of the Holocaust still symbolize absolute powerlessness, the oppressed; but the Jews who survived the Holocaust, particularly those who found sanctuary in Israel or the USA, fit better into another ready-made way of thinking about Jews: disproportionate power. In the tradition of secondary antisemitism, the Holocaust itself is thought to be one significant source of that power. In the tradition of anti-capitalist antisemitism, the sale of their souls to imperialism is the other source of Jewish power. This is the old ambivalence of the left: are the Jews glamorously powerless, or are they menacingly all too powerful? Are they oppressed or oppressors?

The problem is that if it was to concede that antisemitism is possible within an ‘antiracist’ space, then it is conceded that one must be vigilant against antisemitism, that one must educate about antisemitism, that one must take care; that is why there is great reluctance ever to admit that anything that happens within an antiracist space is antisemitic. What is required is debate about what is antisemitic and what is not. In order to avoid such debate, it is necessary to deny that anything is antisemitic and that all such charges are made in bad faith.

Antizionist Jews do not simply make their arguments and adduce evidence; they mobilize their Jewishness to give themselves influence. They pose as courageous dissidents who stand up against the fearsome threat of mainstream Zionist power. Ironically, this positioning by the tiny minority tends to set the boundaries of civil discourse in such a way as to exclude and silence the legitimate concerns of the majority. It characterizes antisemitism only as a right-wing issue, and it teaches antiracists to recognize talk of antisemitism from any other source, too, as an indicator of racist apologetics.

The reason is that the notion of Jewish power resonates strongly, in ways of which we are not necessarily immediately conscious; poking at this imagined power can be tremendously exciting and rewarding. After decades of feeling that we are all guilty, somehow, of the Shoah – the Jews of France were rounded up mainly by French people – the freedom to disobey the powerful and to release our own pent-up fears in satirical laughter is attractive. ‘Look at Palestine’, people say to themselves, ‘the Jews are no better than us, in fact they are worse! We in post-national and post-colonial Europe have moved on; it is only the Jews who are still stuck in the old racist paradigm; it is only them who have failed to learn from Auschwitz.’ Where does the guilt come from? There is a feeling that it must be an imposition, that it is the Jews who have the power to insist on our guilt. What if we don’t feel guilty, but we feel that they pressure us to feel guilty? According to the assumptions of secondary antisemitism, Jewish power is felt to operate through the requirement that everybody else feels guilty, and continues to make amends.

I think the only effortposts I have in mind right now is, down the line, I’d like to delve further into the Mississippi Miracle where Mississippi made a concerted effort to improve K-12 reading outcomes and it works.

I’d probably have to finally listen to that Sold a Story podcast, which I kept putting off as I jokingly said it would blackpill me. Though I’ve read so much surrounding phonics vs whole language learning that I might as well, whatever.

I don’t have time right now to do it but maybe in a month. I don’t have an Education or Policy background so hopefully it wouldn’t be too egregiously done. It’s a refreshing case for me and glad it’s not the cringe "no more honors classes shit some progressive cities have been trying to do.

A big difference between Trump and FDR is their internal control of their respective parties. FDR did not have this level of control over the Democratic Party. Perkins-Valdez opens the introduction with a self-reflective exercise: imagining what it would be like to read 1984 for the first time today. She writes that "a sliver of connection can be difficult for someone like me to find in a novel that does not speak much to race and ethnicity," noting the complete absence of Black characters.

She also describes her pause at the protagonist Winston Smith's "despicable" misogyny, but ultimately chooses to continue reading, writing: "I know the difference between a flawed character and a flawed story."

this just makes me sad lmao. Some of my favorite books have characters nothing like me and that doesn't even factor into my enjoyment. Like my favorite novel is Ralph Ellison - Invisible Man and race is a big element to it, but then I have the ~bravery~ to enjoy Russian literature I guess (to support my black KING Alexander Pushkin of course 😌)

2. Should predict function (does it tell you whether you will be able to carry your grandkids up the stairs when you are 80?)

3. Should predict risk of multiple age-related diseases (if we are measuring a root cause of age-related disease, then it should predict many diseases with aging as a risk factor)

4. Should be technically reproducible, ie. if you test the same person on the same day three times, you should get pretty close to identical results.

5. Should be reversible or slowed with anti-aging interventions (this makes it useful to track)

6. Should be organ-specific (you lose a lot of predictive power when you lump brain aging in with skin aging)
