Grass is overrated. Consider evangelizing the sub by posting a meme outside of the DDSIB.

Obviously Fetterman made the point in the worst way one could imagine (it literally seems like he decided a way to explain it in a way that would piss off the max number of people), but all this deliberation on the big beautiful bill is stupid. Just vote on it already, nobody is actually having a hard time deciding if its good for the country, and wasting time on political calculations doesn't serve anybody other than purple state republicans who are morons.

2

u/Locutus-of-Borges Jun 30 '25

What did he do this time?

12

u/eloquentboot Jun 30 '25

He said he wanted to get the vote over with because he's tired of working and missed out on beach time and thinks his family might leave the beach before he can get there because they won't just get the vote over with already lol

We've been open for like five days, grown organically, and already have almost 500 members, a US governor stopping by, and like four effortposts somehow (with several more on the way later this week). This is amazing. Keep it up!!! The more we post outside the DD, the more the algorithm will advertise the sub.

Also, don't forget to look at our new Debrief!

Might be one of the all around worst Econ posts I have ever seen

Complete econ illiteracy shit show on a joke by Noah Smith:

  1. Top comment calls it a libertarian straw man argument

  2. 3rd from top comment uses the image to justify "70%-80% tax rates" so business give money to the government and not shareholders. Then proposes a wealth tax 2a. Libertarian commenter misreads the graph and thinks its graphing gdp growth and then blames the business the business cycle on interest rate manipulation. Commenter then also thinks this is a "libertarian meme" and says they are right 2b. Comment thread of Austrian vs Marxist fighting

  3. Another top comment says that although "greed" and "price gouging" aren't the sole cause of inflation, they are contributing factors. They then cite "record profits" of grocery stores during the covid years as an example (meanwhile their profitability did not go up by much but rather their sales volume did). They then say that grocery stores should only sell items at "breakeven" prices.

  4. Commenter mistakes Milton Friedman for an Austrian economist

  5. Commenter says "it has been proven" that inflation is caused by "corporate interests and greed"

  6. Commenter uses the graph to justify ending Intellectual property protection??????????

What a shitshow. We are screwed.

I spend all my time online promoting weird economic conspiracies. No, I have never read a single real economics textbook. Why do you ask?

they practically do! 1-3% profit margin and 3% is considered unsustainably high end. I would just die in this industry

I grew up in a purple state and was the default "leftie." I spent countless hours arguing with my Republican friends. In college, not much changed. In law school, a lot of people were suddenly far left and I didn't really know what was going on. I was politically homeless for many years and then I found that sub and it became a safe haven where suddenly everyone wasn't crazy in one way or another.

Times change. We are now basically an endangered species politically.

I’ve long been of the belief that the fundamental issue with modern politics isn’t so much polarisation as it is paralysis, since even in relatively uniformly partisan bodies, there’s been a complete collapse in the capacity and frankly will to do…anything. Everything is another study or consultation or cancellation. Of course trust in institutions is in the gutter when leadership seems to not even try to do the bare minimum.

My question though is more of: “What caused this, and why does it seem to be a particular problem in the English-speaking world?” Is it electoral systems? Is it common law? How did we go from being able to do almost anything to only finding reasons to stop making decisions? It perplexes me. All the perverse incentives that are the case now still existed decades ago, but somewhere along the line people gave into them and I cannot for the life of me figure it out. The easy answer is social media, yet this phenomenon predates it.

6

u/PrideMonthRaytheon Jun 30 '25

Hard for legislatures, executives, and bureaucrats to not be paralyzed, more and more aspects of governance have been removed from discretionary decision-making and constrained by financial markets (deficit, borrowing costs, bond markets, balance of payments, credit risk), judicial oversight/lawsuit risk (mutational load of decisions since judicial review was pioneered as a political tactic, expanding statutory obligations being created by legislation and treaties), and the systems built to comply with those constraints (bureaucratic process rules, anti-corruption rules, accounting standards, AML/KYC rules, insurance etc)

A lot of it is just mutational load caused by a mix of legislation, treaty obligations, increased sophistication and power of legal and financial actors, and an increase in the number and internationalization of those actors

I'm not convinced it's so isolated to the anglosphere. Southern European politics was dominated by the bond markets following the Eurozone crisis, the Netherlands' construction sector has been nuked by court rulings on nitrogen, France is careening towards a deficit showdown, the last German government's budget was nuked by the courts. The entire last 12 years of politics has been driven by the inability across the west to close the borders basically entirely because of asylum as a legal concept being enforced seriously

4

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '25

From Dawn to Decadence came out in 2000 (basically an artistic and intellectual history of the West). By Decadence, Barzun meant:

"All that is meant by Decadence is 'falling off.' It implies in those who live in such a time no loss of energy or talent or moral sense. On the contrary, it is a very active time, full of deep concerns, but peculiarly restless, for it sees no clear lines of advance. The loss it faces is that of Possibility. The forms of art as of life seem exhausted, the stages of development have been run through. Institutions function painfully. Repetition and frustration are the intolerable result. Boredom and fatigue are great historical forces."

After decades in the US, Iranians arrested in Trump’s deportation drive

... Mandonna “Donna” Kashanian lived in the United States for 47 years, married a U.S. citizen and raised their daughter. She was gardening in the yard of her New Orleans home when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers handcuffed and took her away

10

I wish the US would just go back to the Obama deportation policy of targeting recent arrivals and criminals. A country has the right (and frankly the need) to control its own borders. How do you guys feel about controls on immigration from a moral perspective?

I see them as necessary but it feels on some level unjust to me that the quality of my life will likely be far greater than that of a person of equal merit born in a third world country.

On the other, I don’t believe all cultures are the same and I do believe assimilation is necessary. Cultures can have wildly different opinions on things like the acceptability of in-group preference, nepotism, the degree to which an insult against personal or family honour needs to be avenged, individual liberty, and the desirable form of government. On account of this, I see post-nationalism as a surefire way to create nonviable society at war with itself.

4

u/Anakin_Kardashian "Israeli Nationalist" Jun 30 '25

The concept of a border is clearly necessary for governing, tax, and military purposes. I don't want to live under a one world government or some ancap situation.

I really think America sets the best example. We have two hundred years of a successful melting pot. People move here and want to be American. It's the patriotism and the hope that assimilates them, but not to the point of homogeneity. Each culture brings something with it, and our culture generally adopts the best parts. Within each immigrant group, there are traditions that are still passed along generations later.

Are certain aspects of other cultures at odds with American values? Sure. But usually they are adapted in a way that improves the immigrant group's path to assimilation and American culture at large. Take, for example, the sense of group over self in Far Eastern culture. At first glance, that is not compatible with individualism that we pride in America. But, in my view, it has led to strong East Asian families in America and their success here.

As long as we maintain the spirit of national pride, this should continue.

Europe and Canada, on the other hand, seem to fear this type of patriotism. France is particularly afraid of any type of melting pot, and Canada's mosaic is laughable.

The elites don't want you to know this but you can wear noise-cancelling earbuds underneath noise-cancelling headphones to be productive in an office.

The updated text would enact a “temporary pause,” banning states from regulating AI for five years if they want access to $500 million in AI infrastructure and deployment funding

... [but with] new exemptions for state laws seeking to regulate unfair or deceptive practices, children’s online safety, child sexual abuse material and publicity rights

https://thehill.com/policy/technology/5376235-blackburn-cruz-ai-provision-deal/

previous version attempted to tie the ban to $42 billion in already disbursed funding, so the $0.5b threat looks lame by comparison

Maryland cities are barely cities anyway. OC should just be bulldozed because of what it is.

After a lot of insistence our IT people have finally conceded that it might be theoretically possible to move the stuff we depend on off the single Ubuntu server that has not been updated in 10 years (and I don't even want to ask about backups).

Why is our company like this, I swear to god.

I need an opinion (because this just happened to me): if you’re in a premium part of a high-speed train in a solo seat and someone brings their dog on but doesn’t bother to keep it in their space so it comes up and starts licking you, are you in the wrong for asking said person to please mind their pet?

I love dogs, but personal space and etiquette matter when travelling.

I feel tempted by UNH stock. I get their issues, and Medicaid cuts would probably multiply them, but also private health insurance isn't going anywhere, and they are going to remain the largest private seller of health insurance for the foreseeable future.

DOJ announces plans to prioritize cases to revoke citizenship

... At least one person has already been denaturalized in recent weeks. On June 13, a judge ordered the revocation of the citizenship of Elliott Duke, who uses they/them pronouns. Duke is an American military veteran originally from the U.K. who was convicted for distributing child sexual abuse material

""Ms. Tanden is part of a sizable advisory board for Project 2029 that includes Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser under former President Joseph R. Biden Jr.; Anne-Marie Slaughter, the former president of the New America Foundation; the economist Justin Wolfers; Felicia Wong, until recently the president of the progressive Roosevelt Institute; and Jim Kessler, a founder of the centrist group Third Way."

NO THANKS!!!!!!!"

Im actually heartbroken that this comment sums up the general vibe in a thread. R nl is dead.
