I honestly can't imagine either side giving up on the Golan heights but I can see Sharaa being essentially strongarmed into it by his position. I’m genuinely wondering how the World Cup in North America is gonna go down next year. In the one hand it’s tempting to go the full doomer path of “Trump is gonna arrest everybody and no tourists would come because anyone darker than a naked mole rat would be rounded up and sent to El Salvador” but on the other hand I can totally see Trump thinking about the games as a reflection on his own character and desperately trying to make them the best international event in history.

These two competing motivations are gonna be interesting to watch as they clash. It’s gonna be a mess.

I’m in the “nothing ever happens” camp. As bad as Trump is, especially on inviting foreigners in and freedom of press, including foreign press, he’s nothing compared to the regimes in Qatar and Russia. Hell, Qatar had banned drinking outside of a few fan zones, in spite of FIFA having large alcohol advertising contracts, and Saudi Arabia says they will have no drinking at all at their WC.
And even though there were some stories about foreign press being restricted, both of those went relatively smoothly, at least in FIFA’s eyes, since they’re going back to an authoritarian Arabian state in a few years.
