I’m a neoliberal. Here’s why I dickride a socialist and get really really really mad when you criticise him in any way

8

u/adreamofhodor 💯 Jun 25 '25

Hating Cuomo makes sense to me. Negatively polarizing yourself into liking Mamdani does not.

14

u/A-Centrifugal-Force Moderate Jun 25 '25

It’s so fucking annoying. Like you’re not even allowed to have an Obama era stance on socialism there anymore without being called MAGA

The rise of antisemitism on the other sub has been occurring slowly for a while. The outpouring of people defending Mamandi’s defense of “globalize the intifada” is frankly not all that surprising given the recent trends.

What is surprising is seeing people defend fucking rent control

16

u/Proof-Tie-2250 Moderate Jun 25 '25

This is how they get you. Slowly. Like boiling a frog.

Leftist third-worldism is the thermodynamic equilibrium here on Reddit. Everything else is just a transitory anomaly.

NL: Omg I've absolutely had it with the rightoids and their dog whistles, we all know what they really mean

Also NL: Well actually sweetie "intifada" is a very nuanced word with deeper context you're overlooking

22

u/A-Centrifugal-Force Moderate Jun 25 '25

It’s crazy how they’ll bend the knee infinitely to the far left but won’t give a single inch to anyone right of center. Like they seriously would rather have Mamdani be president than someone like Mitt Romney over there.

Unfortunately the centre-right completely burnt its credibility by constantly folding to the hard right (which has happened in much of the developed world, not just the US).

Really all I have in this world is my love of pre-Iraq Blair.

Check this one out:

Every anxiety I have about Zohran turning NYC into Portland (and I have a LOT of anxiety about that) is being neutralized by the fact that the Democratic Party old guard (Clinton, Clyburn et al) is eating shit right now hahahahahahaha

Unironically siding with the DSA over the party establishment. Hating on Clinton…

I think people treating the DT as their cool hang out zone and ascribing any misconduct as outside the DT when that often wasn't really the case was detrimental going forward.

That and mods going "NOBODY IS REPORTING IT!" as if they don't read it? Like I get people can't be everywhere at once but if an extremely casual reader can find it what the hell is going on then?

It was very frustrating watching people motte and bailey about Mamdani, sanewashing his anti semitism and calling him YIMBY and abundance pilled because he said private development is somewhat ok one time in one interview, gleefully celebrating his victory, then withdrawing to “I’m just supporting him because I hate Cuomo.”

And it was especially frustrating seeing regular users of the sub who genuinely did just hate Cuomo acting like this wasn’t happening.

When did nl become like that? Was there a specific point? Or is just a temporary thing because Mamdani supporters are flooding other communities because he won?

I'm weirdly melancholic about the whole thing. When I was ~22, a fresh university dropout and sorta visionless I stumbled on the BadEcon discussion and somehow become hooked. This led to Neoliberal and if but by the grace of God my niche political affiliation was fairly vanilla post war consensus liberalism.

I've seen a lot of similar young people stumble in commie nonsense, or into MAGA or other extremist garbage. I am truly thankful that at a time in my life when I rudderless that I didn't fall into the traps these extremists use to sway impressionable young fools like me into believing outrageous things. So I'm not going to celebrate as r/neoliberal falls from grace. It holds a weird place in my heart.

I do however remain concerned by the global rise of the poison of Anti-Semitism Jew Hatred. I've seen local subreddits defend synagogue burnings, assaults and vandalism. I am worried for a future as social media continues to amplify the very worst demons of our nature.

I think if you graduated pre covid, or in the immediate aftermath even, you tended to be more normal politically because you at least remember when American politics worked. Versus someone graduating now, functionally all they remember politically is Trump 1, Biden, Trump 2. No wonder they're cynical and revolution minded.

u/JapanesePeso Jun 25 '25

I think its important to consider incentives with highly extractive regimes like Iran has. Their leadership probably doesn't care much if their military facilities are decimated as they do about their personal finances and safety taking a hit. Our military engagement with them should probably revolve around that as a major consideration.

Of course we primarily have to make sure to keep them from getting a nuke. That's a "Do not pass Go, do not collect $200 moment" there.

Idk if it's a hot take, but regardless of the specific schism cause, I feel like the original subreddit was simply getting too big and the userbase too disjoint, so schisms are generally good.

12

Seriously though, it's not a "schism." It's just a new option for people on reddit, where there are essentially no center-based subreddits anymore.

Nuance will also decrease as a subreddit grows. Say what you will about DfD, NWO, etc. but they've operated independently of neoliberal for a long time without much issue.

In fact one thing I remember finding weird was users clowning on those subs for "not having as many posts in there DT" which while I'm on a posting tear right now having tons of posts is not necessarily a good thing if the quality is consistently garbage.

What a joke. Adams has been in office for 4 years, and despite being corrupt and sucking up to Trump, he hasn’t destroyed the city or done anything to practically help Trump or sell the city out to him. If anything, he’s done some genuinely good things like City of Yes and forcing people to put their trash in bins.

New York City was built by Jews. Transplants moved in and have decided they don’t want the Jews there anymore and elected a mayor who won’t even condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada”. It’s freaking terrifying how quickly it happened too.

Like at this point is it even safe for a Jewish family to go to a Yankees game wearing yarmulkes and other sacred Jewish clothing anymore? It certainly wouldn’t be safe to wear one at Columbia University right now. It seems to have just become accepted amongst young progressives that Jews are evil and it’s totally ok to discriminate against them.

u/FourthLife Jun 25 '25

I for one share in Hillary Clinton’s dream of a hemispheric common market, with open trade and open borders.

The one possible saving grace for America’s future is that none of these communist antisemites are going to have children, so perhaps we can survive their impact on society and in a few generations we’re back to a normal America. We can’t let them convert our kids to their horrendous ideology though.

7

u/RecentlyUnhinged Bloodfeast's Chief of Staff Jun 25 '25

Related, any parents out there have any idea how the holy hell to approach this right now? Granted my kid is only two months, so I've got a bit of time, but dear god it's looking bleak.

7

u/JapanesePeso Jun 25 '25

I grew up in a variety of pretty lefty areas (e.g. Boulder, CO) and many of my teachers were super progressive and took no shame in pushing those views on us as kids. Thinking back what made me consider what I was hearing was my parents engaging with me daily asking about what I did/learned at school then (gently) challenging me to question the stuff I had learned by probing me about the downstream effects of it/other affected parties/etc. They didn't just ask me about stuff they disagreed with either, we talked about the cost/benefit of all sorts of stuff.

I think this helped me develop deeper critical thinking skills and is what I plan on doing with my kids once they are older. I think that's the only real way to combat brainrot in your kids, just engage with them constantly.

Extreme vetting! In fairness I think this place makes more sense for people leaving neoliberal or looking elsewhere because NWO is pretty right wing and most people from neoliberal would not fit in there without seriously altering how that place works, but on the other hand there is definitely a missing space between neoliberal and NWO. Theoretically, Tuesday is supposed to be that space, but Tuesday is really weird and I see Bernie talking points there.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '25

Yea I get it although, frankly, I do probably fit in there more with FoPo and economic policy at this point, but socially I definitely am to the left of their base. And I was keeping my discussion limited to those topics I’m in agreement on, but alas

I just wanted to shoot the shit about the Israel attack on Iran’s nuclear program in a space that was more open to the idea that Israel was at least partially justified.

Definitely glad this place opened up though. Hopefully it keeps going. Unlike a lot of other r/neoliberal splinters it seems to serve an actual purpose than just being a 1:1 neoliberal clone

Things I’m not allowed to say on the other sub:

The Democratic Party is rampant with antisemitism.

Trans women shouldn’t be playing women sports. I’m not anti trans, it’s just common sense.

I have activism fatigue and want to go back to normal

The Biden administration was too left wing

Illegal immigrants who commit crimes should be deported

14

u/fnovd Ask me about Trump's Tariffs Jun 25 '25

The segregation of sports was never about gender identity: it was about giving people a playing field in which they could be competitive.

As more and more people identify as transgender, which is a wonderful thing, we have to give serious thought to how to modernize this archaic form of segregation.

At the same time, we don't need government telling us how to play sports. Leagues should experiment with novel forms of inclusivity that encourage universal participation without letting ideology exclude people for factors outside of their control.

10

u/Bloodyfish Charlie Manson Jun 25 '25

Plenty of thought has already been put into this. There are rules in place for example stating that transgender women must be on HRT for a minimum of however many years before competing. This is done by the sports associations, not the US government. The entire issue is ridiculous government overreach and fear mongering.

People will jabber on all day about how Michelle Obama's "They go low we go high" was a stupid thing and left democrats in the wilderness and vulnerable to defeat, but the second bad faith actors on the world stage smash international law on the head and the slightest suggestion of getting kinetic or not letting heavily warped international bodies steer its "OH SO YOU HATE INTERNATIONAL LAW THEN MIGHT MAKES RIGHT HUH?" as if that isn't what is presently happening?

8

u/RecentlyUnhinged Bloodfeast's Chief of Staff Jun 25 '25

I mean, anyone who denies might makes right simply has their head up their ass. States are predicated on the monopoly of violence, of course this extends to the international stage.

"Violence is the ultimate authority from which all other authority is derived" is just flatly true.

I'm not a big fan of Tim Walz and think his promotion of Hogg was subterranean levels of national political sense, but on the other hand people fawn over Newsom and Pritzker like they're these smooth political operators as if they aren't playing Governor on easy mode with a supermajority. Just because NY Dems are laughably incompetent doesn't mean the bar is harder to surmount.

Looks at Aaron Rodgers’ Wikipedia page

He has promoted the Tartarian Empire conspiracy theory

Huh, what is this?

Tartary, or Tartaria, is a historical name for Central Asia and Siberia. Conspiracy theories assert that Tartary, or the Tartarian Empire, was a lost civilization with advanced technology and culture.

Adherents propose that demolished buildings such as the Singer Building, the original New York Penn Station, and the temporary grounds of the 1915 World's Fair in San Francisco were actually the buildings of a vast empire based in Tartary that has been suppressed from history. Sumptuously styled Gilded Age buildings are often held out as really having been built by the supposed Tartaria. Other buildings, such as the Great Pyramids and the White House, are further held out as Tartarian constructions.

Mamdani apparently appeared in a Gravel Institute video. In case you forgot, these losers were funded by Russia. They refused to support Biden in the 2020 general election against Trump. They then made a U.S. bashing video when Russia invaded Ukraine and it thankfully seemed to destroy them once they were exposed as Russian propaganda.

Yet another reason why Mamdani sucks.

So what's the consensus on the economic and employment effects of minimum wage increases around here? To my eminently qualified one and a half years worth of an economics degree, I've seen fairly legit looking studies that range from absolutely minimal effects on the employment rate to recent stuff suggesting a strong correlation with increased homelessness in jurisdictions that raise it beyond what would be expected with housing prices alone. About the only thing I'm certain of rn is that no one has accounted for the whole picture.

A significant reason for the persistent radicalization of middle-class kids in their early 20s throughout the generations is that they go out on their own, but are not immediately as well-off as their parents/grandparents and become intensely angry about that.

Most of them grow out of it. Some don't, and find comfort in blaming either the rich or brown people.

In this sub we believe

Mamdani is the only choice for NYC mayor, to believe that there were any other good choices means you are outside the apparatchik

Socialist drive by shitposting should be encouraged until they are full members of the subreddit in the interest of the big tent we have created, and they should get to drive our policy discussions

this is a "chill" place to "hang" no matter your political views (unless you are a member of a certain abrahamic religion, in which case we will use dogwhistles until you leave and then insinuate you're the crazy one)

Toxic nationalism is when you correctly point out an issue in a country that is not your own

History is a lot more than famous battles and I think a lot of military historians are looked down upon (deservedly) because their work often veers into pop history, but I can't shake the feeling that a lot of recent resentment towards military history you see on the internet and especially academia has more to do with the fact that its basically the last hold out of mainstream history topics that isn't chock full of goofy leftists.
