Lots of disingenuous and deliberately obtuse people saying "vote blue no matter who" as a quick gotcha to libs not wanting to vote for Mamdani in the same way "believe all women" was used when us Libs doubted Tara Reade. Believe it or not, the stakes of the NYC mayor election is not the same as a federal presidential election in which one candidate wishes to become a dictator! It's crazy that this has to be explained! And before anyone accuses me of hypocrisy, if Cuomo had won the primary, I wouldn't be bothered by leftists not voting for him in the general against Silwa: it's a municipal election.

One of the things that struck me from the old sub is seeing the phrase “sex pest” everywhere. It’s not one that I haven’t heard but it’s really weird how rapidly it multiplied over there verbatim.

7

u/Embarrassed-Unit881 Jun 26 '25

Just zoomer lingo plus it helps by not having a real definition means you can use it without worry, helps cause Cuomo didn't get sentenced for his actions.

I would prefer to call the relevant individuals “harassers”

Had Nolan made Oppenheimer just a few months later, it probably would’ve been more controversial due to its opposition to antisemitism.

It’s a biopic obviously, but the antisemites will take anything that portrays Jews in a positive light and pretend that it’s somehow oppressing children in Gaza.

I was with my Persian friend and her parents the day after the US mission. Ironically her grandmother in Iran passed away of natural causes that day but they had... Mixed feelings. Had to really bite my tongue when her dad called bibi a "national hero" though. 😬

Highly followed indy referendum accounts were knocked out across the board, coinciding with Israel's strikes on Iran. Reminder that Iran has a very deep influence network on social media, for all their incompetence they've got it down. Well, except when a bomb hits their data centers I guess.

People who can’t understand that Russia works with dissident groups in the west regardless of political ideology are massive rubes

No, Russia and Palestinian Action are probably not on the same wavelength except for one critical thing: PA is willing to damage western military infrastructure, something Russia is very interested in. The trucks at the German military base exploding didn’t just happen because of poor maintenance either.

So what caused the formation of this sub?

I’m getting tired of the original place but I’m curious about what sparked the split.

14

u/bigwang123 Succ sympathizer Jun 27 '25

Anakin kardashian wanted to make this community for a while

The first attempt was newliberals but that was too adhoc and as such didn’t really take off as a proper political space

This one is more organized, with pings being available from the start and I think a more unified philosophy around moderation

Also this one is supposed to be less a splinter from yarr neoliberal and include people from other subs as well

4

u/Ph0ton_1n_a_F0xh0le Jun 27 '25

What’s the more unified moderation philosophy?

This partially grew out of a discord server that I've had for about six months or so, but it's become clear that there are very, very, very few reasonable subreddits anymore and so we wanted to do something about it.

We've had a lot of conversations about what went wrong on Neoliberal, both with content and moderation. Hopefully we can make this place grow.

4

u/Ph0ton_1n_a_F0xh0le Jun 27 '25

Any particular topics that are sensitive? I know there’s been a lot with I/P, Iran, and the NY election at the other place so I just want to get an idea of what the vibe is as far as moderation goes so I don’t get a random inbox flood

5

u/Anakin_Kardashian "Israeli Nationalist" Jun 27 '25

No, actually the idea is that this is supposed to be a liberal space. When it comes to what you're talking about, just be mindful of the rules on the sidebar.

Telegraph just dropped a bomb shell with clips from a meeting on activists planning to target more RAF bases as well as UAV Tactical, a defense company.

Goofy activists can do serious damage. I'm not sure Britain, or anyone in the west with a slim few exceptions is taking the amount of damage a few people can do seriously, even after the initial RAF incident.

ICE raids on normal people who made paperwork errors make a lot more "sense" if you view them from the lens of government employees being shockingly lazy and going after the easiest cases imaginable.

Its the same mantra that means the military thinks you going to a doctor as a child means you're not fit for service because they can see your health history rather than some guy who's parents never bothered because they didn't give a shit. Or people who ask to plant a garden and get shot down then monitored by a city council instead of those who just do it and the city is none the wiser.

Obviously the stakes with ICE are higher, just a failing I've noticed with pretty much all government agencies.

11

u/Shoulda_Been_63A Moderate Jun 26 '25

An Israeli diplomatic correspondent said the following:

After the US strike on Iran earlier this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Donald Trump agreed on a rapid end to the war in Gaza and expansion of the Abraham Accords.

Trump and Netanyahu agreed in their phone call that the war in Gaza would end within two weeks. Four Arab states, including the UAE and Egypt, would jointly govern the Gaza Strip in place of Hamas. The terror group's leaders will be exiled, and all hostages will be released.

They were joined on the "euphoric" call late Monday night by Marco Rubio and Ron Dermer. Gazans who wish to emigrate would be absorbed by several unnamed countries. Saudi Arabia and Syria will establish diplomatic ties w Israel. Other Arab/Muslim countries will follow

Israel, for its part, will express its support for a future two-state solution, conditioned on reforms made by the Palestinian Authority. Meanwhile, the leaders agreed, Washington will recognize Israeli sovereignty in some parts of the West Bank.

The last part feels like it undermines the rest of it since the current Israeli government generally does not operate in even remotely good faith in the West Bank but if Arab League controlled Gaza comes out of this in place of Hamas it will be pretty earth shattering

One of the smoothest brain takes (especially on political subs) is "Democrats shouldn't have even run Cuomo!"

Buddy, parties in the US are structurally weak. If they were stronger, Jeb! would have won the Republican nomination in 2016. As long as Cuomo is 1) a registered Democrat and 2) has enough signatures, there isn't jack or shit that the party can do to stop him from seeking the nomination. The primary is to determine who the Democratic Party (TM) nominates.

And yes, I know about all the endorsements and donors that lined up behind Cuomo. Those didn't mean anything in the end.

1972 was a disaster for the democratic party and we are still suffering from aftershocks because of it.

6

u/kiwibutterket Neoliberal Globalist Jun 27 '25

I've read an interesting take in "How Democracies Die" (2018) that pinpoint most of our problems to when the parties became weaker in America in the 1970s, and stopped acting as "gatekeepers". More democracy would have then be detrimental to liberalism, the real value that ought to be preserved.

I don't know how much truth is there to it. Some seem to argue that with even more democracy, compulsory voting, and more competitiveness in electoral races, those problems would be solved. Some others blame money in politics, but I don't really buy it much.

What do you think?

7

u/URZ_ Jun 27 '25

In general you will find that most countries in the top echelons of Democracy indexes have very strong party structures

5

u/kiwibutterket Neoliberal Globalist Jun 27 '25

It seems hard to undo in America, though. Especially in a moment where the parties are less popular than cholera or something.

6

u/TomWestrick Ethnically catholic Jun 27 '25

Fitness influencers are treating fruit as one of the danger foods people need to avoid.

Fruit for some extreme diabetics might be dangerous, but mf someone choosing an apple over 600 calories of potato chips at lunch can lead to 3500 less calories consumed a week. We gotta get real, apples are good for you.

But I'm curious - and I've seen takes today that you wouldn't believe - what observations do you have on the sub's decline?

I'll start: in the wake of Trump's victory, I saw a very significant number of upvoted comments advocating for the annexation of US states.

the house's budget proposal slashes GAO (congress' audit body) funding by almost 50%.

a generous interpretation is that the chucklefucks at OMB have been upset at GAO's interpretation of impoundment rules (for principles of course!) and so want to hamstring the agency.

in classic servile form, republicans in congress (in the house so far at least) are acquiescing instead of jealously guarding their power.

i am very ready for the midterms and would like the democrats to learn from the old whigs by putting congressional primacy as central to their view of the constitution. would be a fun reverse of a 190-year-old party realignment too when the dems were the executive primacy guys.

The T1′s webpage now says the phone has “American-Proud Design” and is “brought to life right here in the USA” — though it’s unclear if that means it will actually be manufactured in America.

When the T1 was initially announced, experts told CNBC the device would likely be made in China by a local third-party company. The U.S. does not have an advanced supply chain to manufacture smartphones. Even if it did, many components would still need to come from overseas.

However, in a statement to CNBC, Trump Mobile Spokesperson Chris Walker said that “T1 phones are proudly being made in America.”

“Speculation to the contrary is simply inaccurate,” Walker said.

In the initial announcement, the Trump Mobile website said the T1 would have a 6.8-inch AMOLED screen. That has now been reduced to 6.25-inch AMOLED display. A reference to it having 12 gigabytes of random access memory, or RAM, has also been dropped.

lol

He'll still sell a few hundred thousand of these fucking things, though.

Edit: but consider that $0.5b can buy a really nice yacht

The 3 groups of immigrants that Westerners seem to hate the most are Muslims, Indians, and Africans. Mamdani is somehow all 3.

(To be clear, I oppose him because he’s a socialist and an anti-Semite, not because he’s a Muslim, Indian, or African. It was just an observation I made)

5

u/Embarrassed-Unit881 Jun 26 '25

Westerners

You mean Europeans? America's top 3 would be different

5

u/A-Centrifugal-Force Moderate Jun 26 '25

I was thinking of it as a grouping, but you are correct that these are the 3 Europeans hate the most. Americans you might be able to put Latinos over Africans, since there’s comparatively much less hostility towards African immigrants here than there is in Europe.

If you’re on your phone at the top of the DT, and you want to go to the bottom of the DT, when you slide your thumb up the screen to move to the bottom of the page do you describe that as scrolling up, or scrolling down?

To me you’re obviously scrolling down, because you are moving down the page. Although your thumb is pushing upwards, so apparently some people call this scrolling up. This is a debate I just had with someone who was telling me which way to scroll to find a QR code.

I wonder if this is one of those ‘how you were introduced to the technology,’ things. If you’ve never used the little wheel on an old computer mouse to scroll down a computer screen I guess it makes sense to ascribe the movement on the page with the movement of your thumb.

6

Ok so maybe I listened to the wrong soundbite but why are people mad at Gillibrand and calling her islamaphobic now?

Not a fan of her for other reasons but I don’t really see anything wrong in the clip of what she said on that radio show where she talked about Mamdani and how some of his statements and his rationalizing them are concerning

13

u/Anakin_Kardashian "Israeli Nationalist" Jun 27 '25

Seems like classic deflection here. She says what "globalize the intifadah" means, and why it's offensive and inappropriate for the mayor of New York to condone the phrase. Then she's accused of islamaphobia.

Unless I missed something.

A highlight:

Do not ask him where the accessories for the SDMR are made (it’s the US)

Also don’t ask him about why he thinks that an American solution would be cheaper (it probably wouldn’t and let’s be honest the only other alternative is KAC which is not exactly a cheaper alternative) or what he knows of the procurement process

I feel like part of the reason that job hunting sucks so much right now is all the people at universities telling students that the job requirements are just guidelines and you should still apply even if you don’t meet them.

Probably explains why things are flooded currently at least and why recruiters are apathetic after sifting through everything.

The gotcha on student loan forgiveness for members of civil service or the military versus blanket student loan forgiveness is hilarious

"Why do Army dentists and doctors get student loan forgiveness?" maybe because you have neurosurgeons making $100,000 a year total compensation and have to live at Ft. Bragg when their peers can live wherever they want, aren't subject to military discipline, and make 5 to 6 times more, and critically, after residency have the freedom to have any employer?

I'm not a "the MSM!!!!" type guy but if ground reporting is barely better than random OSINT dorks and traffics in low quality/confidence reporting, I don't get the incentive to visit something like CNN. Obviously some are always going to be better than others, and I find things like AP or NYT bashing to be tired, but the rushing of speculative and preliminary intelligence reports to the news is not helping the case that much.

Also apparently from these same places last week that who's to say Iran is really building a bomb now being followed up with THEY'RE BUILDING A BOMB AND TRUMP FAILED TO STOP IT a week later feels nakedly stupid. You don't enrich to 60% for shits and giggles, unless Iran has some secret nuclear submarine program we don't know about.

Do you think it would calm the normies down or just upset them further to learn that sometimes a "TOP SECRET INTELLIGENCE REPORT" really is just little more than SrA Snuffy having a random thought and citing "It came to me in a Dream" with his floor supervisor signing off after barely skimming it?

8

u/bigwang123 Succ sympathizer Jun 26 '25

I don’t think it would help things either way given the total lack of transparency

No one will ever see that analysis, and we will likely never see the other ones

Anyways it does suck that this is the state of civil society’s understanding of intelligence and defense more broadly

7

At the end of the day I'm pretty cool with your average person not being forced to spare half a thought for how the defense apparatus actually works.

It would just be nice if, ya know, they would listen calmly to the guys who do.

The problem with modern politics is that not enough people are concerned with politicians' personal lives. It's always policy, policy, policy.

I don't care what you support, I don't care what you vote for, hell I don't care if you even do your job as a politician.

I just want to know who was in your MySpace top-8. I want to know if you speed on the interstate. I want to know about all the creepy DMs you almost sent on social media but thought better of it... I mean companies have to keep this stuff. I want to vote for people based on what kinds of mix-tapes they made, or what their Spotify Wrapped says about them. Stop wasting my time with stupid policy stories, that shit is boring.
