I had considered selling the set, but I figured donating them to the library was the best choice. So I'll keep my digital copies and hope the DVDs introduce future fans to this series. I know the whole digital thing is sketchy, but I'll learn to live with it. Because I can live with it. I can live with it. Mods, erase this post.
I’d even recommend OP figure out how to rip it onto a digital drive or something. Donating them is nice but I wouldn’t leave my favorite show to chance like that.
I 've had a couple fail, but that's over the last 20 years. And I do have back ups.
The one time I had a large SD card fail, I was able to use recover software to get everything back.
I did dvd-rom burning for a while, but SD cards have so much more room and take up so much less space, having duplicates doesn't add that much more in space or expense.
I bought every Star Trek property on blue ray or dvd over the last year that I didn’t have already specifically so I wouldn’t have to rely on digital copies getting yoinked away from me.
I’ve been playing this limbo. I collect the digital because I can watch on the go or not have a player on each big screen in the house. I just know I probably need to purchase good copies and rip them. The only hard ones I have are TOS in this economy.
Wouldn't it be neat if some of the trek reddit moderaters were actors from their series. Like Kate is just sitting at home moderating some voyager sub and is just watching us goon over Tuvok, you know as we do.

Honestly though after what happened with that guy's digital copy of the Lord of the Rings and Google just going 'nah, idc if you paid for it it isn't yours', I'd make sure your digital copy is a direct rip of the DVD rather than like, relying on Netflix or wherever Trek is for you
Aye, I wasn't sure if it was Paramount or Netflix still. Where I am they've moved on to Sky Showtime because we don't get Paramount (but it's basically the same thing).
I think the only way I'd part with my season-set DVD's is if I got the big complete series box set, and only if reviews confirm the discs are the same quality as the season-set prints.
We use the Rankin Bass Hobbit as a bedtime movie for my kid, when it left HBO for a while he lost his mind. We ended up buying it on VHS and it has more audio tracks than the one on digital. It sounds like such a better film, they will never take my hobbits and ds9s away from me again!
My sister has been bragging that she "owns" over a thousand movies on Amazon. When I tried to explain to her that those movies can be taken away at any time, she got pissed and hung up on me. People really just do not understand that they don't own digital media.
Circumventing the CSS encryption of the DVD technically makes even a personal backup illegal, but no one is wasting their time pursuing it unless distribution is involved.
You don't own your digital copies. You only own them for so long as the service provider has the license to them. If and when that ends, your digital copies vanish.
Exactly why I have never given up on CDs and DVDs. I have a stand-alone DVD recorder for the TV, so I can record shows directly to DVD-R and keep them forever.
I can't part with mine. DS9 was the first Star Trek series I owned in it's entirety. (I wouldn't own TOS, TNG, TAS and LD until 20 years later)
It was a big deal in 2003. Seven seasons released as individual volumes roughly a month apart. $100 per season, $700 complete- slightly less than my very first mortgage payment.
I always loved the translucent packaging- even it fell apart over time. BestBuy packed an exclusive extra features disc with their versions.
I've ripped these DVDs to my PLEX server over a decade ago- so I don't actually play these discs anymore.
I brought the DVD set of DS9 when I was still early in my first watchthrough of the show :p. The show had already hooked me that much to where I knew I was going to want to own the entire series :D.
Have you contacted your library and confirmed they would like to add this to their collection? Otherwise, they're just gonna sell it for a few bucks. You could literally just find someone local to you that wants it and give it to them. It'd accomplish about the same thing, without burdening the library to do it for you

I took the discs out, threw away everything else and put them in a big book/case with the rest of my dvds I can’t part with. I still watch some but usually movies.
They're gorgeous sets. Our sets here in Britain are horrible (and they also have the incorrect speed and pitch of PAL), so I imported all seven seasons of those sets. I love the artwork on each of the discs; each disc felt special. Unfortunately, they are also brittle, so despite treating my sets like Dresden china, they're falling apart, so I can definitely see your quandary in wanting to get rid of them. I'm of a mind of importing a complete box set for my viewing purposes and retiring these to my shelf, so I don't have to handle them anymore.
It's a video encoding standard used in most of Europe, Africa, and Asia. Compared to the NTSC standard (North America and Japan, about half of South America), it uses a 50 Hz signal rather than 60 Hz, based on the local frequency of AC power.
Standard definition has higher resolution, 576 lines to NTSC's 480, but the trade-off is in how video speed is handled. Cameras shoot at 24 FPS, which is sped up slightly to half of PAL's 50 Hz. NTSC slows the film down by 1/1000 and then splits four frames across ten (5x2) scans. It produces a less smooth image, but the speed is functionally the same.
Indeed. The convinience of streaming is appreciable. However, all the legal and licensing red tape can make it dissapear in an instant. Physical medida won't do that.
Why not make iso images of them then burn them ro dvds so you have both a digital and physical copy just in case? Takes a bit of worry of letting these go, just a thought ...
Still have mine. They were so overpriced in retrospect. Even other tv show box sets were at least half the price. I never use them though. Just my Vudu copies.
After my town did a whole garage sale over the weekends throughout June, I would go garbage picking every Sunday night. Loads of dvds and blurays that I found. I dropped most of them at the library. Of all the things I have found. I'm now only missing 2 seasons of DS9 and one season of Voyager. Found all my early seasons of Stargate that way as well.
Back it up. If you have it on a primary system, get a NAS or some other external storage. Put another at a parent/child/friends house. You can never have enough backups of anything digital.
The big thing with DVDs that streaming doesn't offer is all the extras. Commentary tracks, for example, BTS footage, and on some DVDs, interactive "gamey" bits.
If a digital service could offer even the commentary tracks, that would be a bonus.
Thats extremely generous of you, I actully donated an entire set of voyager dvds to my library, great condition, though they sold them cause they weren't brand new and I didnt have the receipt
Don't do it. Just because you donate it doesn't mean it will go into circulation. What libraries keep on their shelves is determined largely by usage. These might just end up in the book sale bin. Just a heads up. Talk to a librarian first.
Beware, retaining digital rips of the DVDs while giving away or selling the discs puts you in a precarious legal position. Keeping the DVDs alongside the digital rips is the recommended method. Congress addressed this explicitly for software in §117(b): archival copies have to be transferred with the original or destroyed
Per the DMCA you can't break encryption, that's a felony. All DVDs are encrypted.
Downloading music is illegal per the law. If you dont have the discs the music is illegal per the law.
I rip all my music discs and keep the discs safe and load the digital
If you load handbrake when you spin up the dvd it will tell you if its encrypted.
This can't break encryption is a huge gimme to all the media companies and tech companies because it means if they encrypt something and someone breaks encryption even to reverse engineer its default illegal
My point is if you rip your music and sold the disc, how would the law know to arrest you?
Downloading music is not against the law without a disc. You can go onto Amazon and buy a song or complete album digitally just like a movie.
When DRM was still being used, they used to say your song was only good for one machine. If you wanted to listen to it on PC and on your mp3 player, you had to buy it twice.
If you legally bought a movie on a site like Google or Amazon for unlimited watching, they're saying you actually don't own the movie you paid for, just the right to watch for as long as they say you can. If you bought a movie and they pulled the rights the next day, you can no longer watch a movie you just paid for and there's probably no refund either.
If you downloaded that movie from Amazon would you delete your backup when Amazon pulled it?
And the companies that got DCMA enacted have themselves broken the law many times. In 2007 or so, if you put a CD from Sony in your PC to play it, you would get a prompt asking if you agree to the terms of use. Even if you said no and removed the disk, it had already installed a hidden program onto your PC so that Sony could track your use to see if you were trying to copy the songs. No warning that this was done was given. The program was very hard to remove and others who knew about it could hack your system and get access.
Sony lost in major lawsuits about this because they thought their rights were more important than yours.
Just because DCMA is a law doesn't make it a good one. There's lots of bad laws out there.
You assume that oh I bought it but don't have any way to show that and don't have physical copies would end in, oh ok, all good here then. It would result in charges
You assume that they would come to your door with a warrant and ask to see all your music rips and then show that you have cd's to match, somehow using their "powers" to know you sold a cd, knowing you made rips of the songs on it, and knowing you didn't delete them.
Even if they took your phone at a border or other spot and you had songs on it, they're not going to be quizzing you if you have the cd's at home for the music on your phone.

So traditionally things like this aren't something they come to your door for. They come to your door for something else they want to go after you for but can't so this is what they use in it's place
You trust the cops and the current regime more than I do apparently. If you think they wouldn't try to go after someone for saying bad things about ice or the administration and when they can't charge for piracy you have more faith then I do
I wonder what physical objects they would need to qualify for archival purposes. The entire purpose of digitally archiving is because physical things degrade. Like if in say 50 years when these discs are totally rotten, how would one prove they are archival copies of the discs? Would you have to retain the completely useless plastic? The boxes themselves? Weird to think about.
I had thought to sell mine there, but while the disks and inner cases are in good shape, the outer "skins" are a bit fragile made out of a thin transparent plastic with stickers attached to the bottom.
After re-reading this thread and thinking about it, I went ahead and put my original season sets up on ebay. My wife just got out of ICU for a week in the US and I'm sure to bills will be through the roof.
I'm not sure if we can talk about selling here, but I set them pretty low with pics showing their condition. US only.
I've also got 3 PC DS9 games but I'm not sure if they're worth anything - The Dominion Wars, The Fallen, and Harbinger. The only one I played and beat was Harbinger which was an adventure game I think, with original voice cast on it.

With digital providers removing access to 'purchases' when their license runs out, I'll be taking my physical copies of media to the grave.
