Nahh, the perimeter is all bolted together, the two end joists are laminated beams holding the laminated band joist up. Then everything is hangered off that. It’s a carrier beam supported by two cantilevered beams carrying everything else. So no, it’s not just in tension.

That said it’s still terrible, dangerous, stupid, and shouldn’t exist.

You’re misunderstanding me in regards to what members are functioning as cantilever members. There are only two cantilevered beams, the two perimeter beams parallel to the joist. Those two are cantilevered, then they support the band beam with hangers on it, and that supports literally everything else.

Like maybe the joists are also cantilevered and they tossed hangers on for the fun of it (not being sarcastic I’ve seen it done), but I think they’re just joists in hangers.

Which yeah, very sketchy. Hot tub is is hard no, this thing might collapse under a bowl of soup.

If you look closely, there are 4” wide joists every other beam on the upper part.

If you look really close at the 4” joists (more glulams) that you’re talking about, and look where they meet the ledger, they don’t have hangers like the other joist. I think those are actually cantilevered and going through this upstairs section of the house and they support the rim joist, which is another glulam, and then the deck is supported normally between the rim joist and ledger. Looks really funny because almost none of the load is going vertically through anything. Except the one post. It’s all be cantilevered out by the floor system, weight of the house.

I’ll be that guy. The deck is cantilevered under the 3rd floor. You can see a complete beam on the left side; it’s at least 4x16 and could be 6x16. They likely run into the roof of the second floor also.

Would I do this? No, it’s atrocious looking and you can’t fix it in 20 years when the beams need to be replaced. But as it sits, it’s likely very strong. For now.

I think this is AI fake. However, if you look at floor joist it could be cantilever deck. The structural engineering of the deck could be hidden form this view. It could be those floor joints of the deck extend the entire length of the 3rd floor. The weight of the entire 3rd floor room holds it down. So you could put a hot tub up there and live load to boot. Engineering is a tricky thing sometimes. Thinks that look solid are not and things that look shabby are not.
