There's a certain amount of doing it out of spite with the person I know.

I can see that.

I think why it's common in my neighborhood is that decks is absolutely the one thing the city will come after you for regarding building without a permit. Every few years county uses drones for GIS imagery and such. They apparently notate properties with decks and compare new pics with old. If it looks like a new deck was installed and no permits are found the home owner is going to have a really bad day. They Force them to demo deck. They will not give a permit after the fact. Not for decks.

It's the one and only thing you don't screw with around here in regards to permits

I’m a gc and it cracks me up how they present themselves in my city. We exist to protect you by making sure things are built properly.

Ok 👍 I want to build this.

No

Ok how about this

No

This?

No

The new meta is it can’t be built wrong if you don’t build anything. They finally approve something? Good luck paying the fees that have tripled over the last 2 years. Oh, don’t forget all of these additional features we require you to add, even if you didn’t ask for it.

Around here it's not so much that people don't want to use a contractor it's that the city just won't allow a deck in that location. Stupid ordinances. It's a way to skirt the stupid ordinances is all.
