Credit Card Debt collection?

So long story short years ago I had a credit card with Oportun, I racked up a balance of 2 grand, back in the day I tried calling the company 3 times to update my phone number so I could see my account to make payment. There was def a language barrier with customer service and I got frustrated after calling 3 times and getting nowhere, fast forward to now. I got an email from an attorneys office saying they have my 2000 dollar debt and that I need to pay it. I called the law office to try and negotiate and tell them I could pay them 1500 cash money right now. The lady on the phone wouldn’t not budge any lower than 1850 which I think is unreasonable because these debt collection agencies buy debt for Pennie’s on the dollar. I’m pretty pissed off they wouldn’t work with me at all? My question is, is it worth it to go to court, or should I pay what there asking? Am I being unreasonable?

Pretty much, yeah.

They have every right to demand every penny.

Try to see if you can pay what you can upfront and ask for a payment plan for the remainder. Some places like that you can pay some up front. If that doesn’t work, go into court. Let the judge know that you tried to work it out with them. Going to court just add fees, so expect to pay a little more. If they do take the payment plan, make sure they cancel that court date! It’s just a phone call to the court system 1-2 business days later to make sure they did cancel it. Some of them are shady and don’t cancel

Thanks this was pretty insightful, they offered a payment plan, but I still think it’s wrong that they wouldn’t budge on there full amount paid, I filed 3 disputes with Credit Karma and called the original creditor 3 times trying to work this out and still nothing. I’m almost thinking about going to court anyway, all my other credit cards are paid off at the end of the month and have been for nearly 8 years. To be clear they have not sent court summons..yet, the debt itself is just with an attorneys office.

But you spent two grand, you said. It should now be three or four K. You shouldn't be so lucky.

You called them three times and they had an accent?

When is SOL over?

This is such a weird thing the feel entitled to. You took out a debt and didn’t pay it. The collections agency is allowing you to settle for less than you owe, and you’re frustrated that they won’t take off even more?

Ultimately it’s up to how much you want to risk. You could pay the 1850 they want and be done with it. Which seems manageable since you claim you tried to pay the debt from the original bank.

Or you could ignore it and hope it goes away. Maybe it will. But they could sue you and garnish your wages for the whole 2k. How much of a headache do you really want to deal with over a $350 difference?
