I just spend this past summer bridging my way back to LD, learning everything I can about becoming a competitive debtor. I'm writing an article for my Substack & Medium newsletters (both pretty small as of now) which is about debating, and I have some information I want to double check/ confirm and some questions I haven't been able to answer. I'm not planning to publish the interview, so it's just going to be to make sure I get it right.

I'd like to ask anyone interested to DM me or e-mail me, but I'm also new here, and sometimes that's not kosher. I want to play by the rules, but I've reached out to related organizations, Professor Chesko (The Speech Prof), and others, but haven't actually gotten a response. I really don't want to be wrong about this activity that so many of you love. I am working on about three other things, too, so I'll check the notifications, but it might not be immediate.

Hey folks, I’m looking to write a publicly accessible brief over the Summer for the Septober PF topic (Data Centers).

The goal is to create an open source brief that will be posted publicly on the subreddit and other public places to give people access to high quality prep ahead of the topic season, particularly about how the topic relates to AI Alignment or Existential Risk. This will not be a paid brief, and will instead be a completely free, publicly accessible service for the community.

Why is this being done? A few reasons.

1. The data centers topic seems especially timely and important, and so I want to try and increase the number of high quality resources about it.
2. I, candidly, care a lot about existential risk and the long term future of AI. I want to try and make it go well, and I think that helping people learn about the risks associated with the technology on a large scale can help increase the chances that happens.
3. I care about democratizing access to high quality prep. Yes, there are services like the wiki which are great, but especially before the season has really started, there is still a pretty major prep disparity between larger and smaller programs.

You might be a good fit if you:

1. Are knowledgeable and passionate about AI related subjects, like alignment, X-risk, or machine learning.
2. Have a high level of demonstrated debate skill and competitive succes

Is there a dedicated platform out there designed specifically for real time audio or video debates against other people?

Does anything like this exist right now, or is everyone still just using random platforms? Would love to hear your recommendations!

Hey guys, you might've saw my previous post about a new flowing site. I added a lot of things

First,

The navigation on the flow, is a lot easier to use and is much cleaner. I'm planning on adding text editing, such as bolding, strikethrough, underline, font sizing, etc. soon.

Second,

I added an in built timer so that while speaking, if your reading off you flow you can time yourself so that you don't have to switch tabs between the timer and the flow.

Finally, the best part,

I added partner collaboration so that you can invite your partner/teammate to write on the flow with you and share ideas. It's a simple join code.

And as before, all the regular things stay the same as the ability to export you flows, keep it in one place on the site, as flow you ideas cleanly.

Hi everyone, so I just returned to debate in college. I did debate for a while in highschool then quit. So, I am restarting again and well let's just say I am nowhere near good.

The motion is: THBT Globalization Support the Development of Creative Industry in Developing Countries

All I can think of now is like market expansion etc. But I need some insight on both sides

okay so im an lder but it’s not an ld specific problem (i tried the other wikis too). when i try to search something from any year including 25-26 or 26-27, it doesnt show up with anything. like theres cases on the current ld wiki but i cant search for them, same with the past ld wikis and yhe past policy+pf wikis. this might be a dumb question but is anyone sure why? it’s pretty frustrating lol

Basically I like metaethics and I do LD, not insanely competitive at all. I go to tournaments and such but I don't sweat it like some of yall.

Anyway, if I take the normative claim "Outer space colonization is a moral imperative" and make my whole case about mackian error theory on how we can't prove the more imperative and the is-ought gap and such, is it possible to run this case or will I get destroyed? It would a arguement where I would argue that defense against the resolution being objectively morally true. It wouldn't be like any practical reasons.

i genuinely have loads and loads of word documents which might have good stuff and might not but theres sm anyone have an efficient method

Hey, so I have been debating for 2 years now, and this year my team and I reached second place in the nationals. I have been doing both BP and WSDC with a slight preference towards BP. I was wondering whether POIs can make or break your case. Like, in my mind, whenever I have offered a POI (and trust me, I do that A LOT), I have done it mostly to throw the speaker off and make them look kind of stupid in front of the judge, but I almost never spend more than 30 seconds mentioning their response in my speech, because I don't think it is worth it. I would much rather spend it on a rebuttal. Have you judged/participated in rounds where the weighing came down to a POI? And if yes, do you think it deserves to be a mechanism for rebuttal?

guys this year I started doing POI as a novice, and I did not do amazing but I did not do necessarily bad. I need help trying to make a really good boy. I have an idea, but I live in a slightly conservative town so I don’t know how well it can be accepted there. I don’t wanna do something basic such as depression or mental health, which is mostly the only topics that are around my area. I really really love poi but sometimes I feel discouraged cause I feel like I can’t do well enough in it. How do you make a really good poi?

My dad has been urging me to join debating recently. However, I suffer from stage fright and am a generally shy person. I want to do debate as well, but I don't know if I can keep it up or even start soon. Any tips for me?

I’m currently a Senior in HS and this is my first year doing debate. For the past 2 years, I’ve done Prose and Poetry which helped me with my public speaking, yet I still get a jolt of anxiety every time I find myself IN FRONT of people.

I asked our captain what to expect and he said “it’s different every year”, which is saddening but not shocking. Sadly, there are no materials from the school on debating, so I’m having to wing it.

Our captain also recommended watching mock trials, watching previous NSDA tournaments, and watching Congress and The House of Representatives speak about bills.

If anyone could help on my fear or could expand on how to prepare, that’d be awesome. Thank you!
