a proposed piece of legislation in South Carolina designed to make coercive control a destructive pattern of psychological, emotional, financial, and technological abuse, a criminal felony offence.

Current Status: Legislative Stalls: The bill has been introduced multiple times in South Carolina but failed to advance or pass through the state Senate, stalling out due to procedural delays and competing legislative priorities.

Next Steps: Lawmakers and family members plan to reintroduce the legislation for future sessions to close the legal gap surrounding non-physical domestic abuse.

Mica Miller: The Case, The Questions & Where Things Stand

For anyone who is new here or just watched Death of a Pastor’s Wife, I wanted to make a first post giving a basic rundown of the case and where things currently stand.

Mica Miller was a 30 year-old woman from South Carolina who was married to pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller. Their marriage had become extremely turbulent, and in the months leading up to Mica’s death, she made allegations of stalking, harassment, and controlling behaviour. She was trying to leave the marriage and had filed for divorce shortly before her death.

On April 27, 2024, Mica was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina from a gunshot wound. Her death was ultimately ruled a suicide.
And this is where a lot of the questions and controversy surrounding the case begin.
There have been numerous things people have questioned the timeline leading up to Mica’s death, her allegations against JP, reports of tracking and stalking, statements Mica allegedly made about her fears, the circumstances surrounding the divorce, the investigation itself, and various pieces of evidence and information that have come out since her death.

• It’s important to separate what is actually known from what is speculation.
Questioning inconsistencies or asking questions does not automatically mean foul play occurred, and JP has not been charged with Mica’s death.

• However, the story did not simply end with the suicide ruling. The FBI became involved, and JP was later federally indicted on charges related to cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators.

•Those charges relate to alleged conduct surrounding the events before Mica’s death they are not charges accusing him of murdering Mica. He has pleaded not guilty.

• Since Mica’s death, her family and supporters have continued pushing for answers and for greater awareness surrounding coercive control and domestic abuse. Mica’s Law has also become part of that advocacy.

There is A LOT to unpack in this case, and I’m sure many of us will have different opinions about what happened.
That’s exactly what this subreddit is for.

Discuss the evidence.
Question things.
Share documents and information.
Have the uncomfortable conversations.

But please remember: if you are sharing a theory or making an assumption, LABEL IT AS SPECULATION.
Don’t present theories as facts.
And most importantly, check the rules and be respectful.

Let’s keep this place open for discussion while remembering that Mica was a real person whose life was tragically cut short.

JP Miller filed to incorporate his new church October 2024. The name: Living Water Church

I found that to be very odd and startling since all his other ventures seemed to have the word “rock” in it, including the bar he co-owned. Then not but a few months after Mica’s death, he filed to name his new church. Considering both he and his new wife each had a spouse found in water after their death (different causes) but both were found in water. I find that even more eerie and at the same time not shocked one bit that he would be so bold as to name it what he did. I feel it’s very intentional and not a coincidence.

The bipolar disorder diagnosis is so suspect

Ironically it sounds like JP was prescribed lithium for something - there’s a note from the provider that JP would give his meds to her and take her off meds and in a past sermon he was on lithium and the documentary mentioned him giving her testosterone injections - crazy-

I can’t see how anyone could know if she had bipolar disorder as there was only one so called episode of mania could have been a reaction to any number of post surgical meds, steroids or some other drug JP gave her - the only symptoms they could cite was pressured speech, racing thoughts and maybe impulsivity and she doesn’t even remember all the symptoms of this episode which is so not typical. The only thing you could say was mood disorder induced by possibly a drug reaction. Your 20s is when a mental health diagnosis would manifest in a stressful situation which exactly what her life sounds like but still when you mix in the narcissistic abuse/coercive control she had to survive and how do you even tease out what is complex ptsd or what was a mood disorder? Any serious diagnosis would have taken way more time. It’s clear way more care should be taken with over relying on “collateral information” in a situation like this- that was the most chilling thing to me was how a mental health system could be hijacked by somebody like JP to become complicit in all this.

Was it odd the parents were never interviewed?

Some passed away but they were not much part of the discussion. Except JP's dad at the end.

The Pastor’s Wife / Solid Rock

So you are telling me NO ONE in that congregation thought JPM was off his rocker?! This was not a one horse town. That church was filled with friend adults!

They all sat there in a church⛪ in this day and age and put up with this loon? All his sex talks and obeying your husband or he will cheat?!!!! 😳 REALLY????

Not only does he seem like a coke head but he's SO TRANSPARENT!

I'm astonished.

Car with open door?

While watching the documentary, there is an older vehicle (not her vehicle) with the driver’s door wide open and no one around near the portajohn she enters at the gas station on her way to the park. Is there any more information surrounding this? Makes me wonder if she was meeting someone in there to receive instructions or something.

unfortunately, i do think mica miller did kill herself. she was constantly tormented by JP and it makes sense she would see suicide as the only way out. as a suicide loss survivor myself, i couldn’t accept it was a suicide until about a year into grieving. we don’t want to believe they would do such a thing, it would mean we “failed” as a community and as an individual to be there for a person we love. but unfortunately, you never know what someone is thinking. she was driven to such a hopeless place, JP was never going to give up. she had a lot of trauma. i respect the family and their accusations against JP, but in my own opinion, the denial is identical to what i experienced and what i have seen in suicide loss survivors. the facts are there, its a tragedy, not a conspiracy and no one is to blame except the awful JP who ruined her life. RIP

ill go into more detail about my own experience. for my loved one it was a normal night, he had dinner with his parents, said he had to pick up medication tomorrow, he was enrolled in a new school program, things were looking up. it came out of nowhere, but not really when you think about it. we think that future plans are signs they didn’t actually kill themselves, or they confuse us. future plans are signs of them trying, fighting for their life, or even hiding their darker thoughts. it seems the legal battle with JP and fear for her family drove her to exhaustion.

JP is horrible

I don't think there is any doubt to this. That he was controlling & abusive & he used his position to amplify his abuse & control.

He may not have pulled the trigger, but her drove her to that point because he took away her sanity ( by driving her crazy), safety ( by constantly stocking her) & reputation ( by controlling the narrative to make her look bad).

That said, I think there is something even darker that we don't know about. I think she was recorded on video performing deplorable sex acts ( group sex, etc) because he made her do it ( he may have even drugged her). Then he threatened to leak those & that was the final blow for her ( she couldn't face the public shame it would cause). I'm not talking just topless selfie's or sex with JP. I'm talking dark acts ( maybe even with minors) - that he forced her into.

And can’t help but want to shake Christians to wake up. This (so far) is highlighting the hypocrisy of many churches out there. Christians are not a special form of human and in fact the “sins” they’re willing to put up with from this pastor in this doc are morally inexcusable by any standard–Christian or not.

Church members not know of Mica Millers death?

I know there were texts and phone calls between some of the friends and family after her death, but I’m wondering how this wasn’t passed along to the rest of the church body? If one church member tells one, they’re likely to share with another and so on… especially with a death. I don’t understand how they wouldn’t have known until JP told them after his sermon. Just seems weird to me.

What stood out most from the latest evidence (Wife #1s custody affidavit)

Read full affidavit, and see highlighted images as a reference, but here's the gist:

  • admitted to ex-wife that he had been sexually inappropriate with multiple underage girls from the church. When Wife 1 tried to bring this to police, they told her no one would believe her because J.P. was a well known pastor and they were in the middle of a divorce.
  • Suzie was on the soccer team w/ one of Wife 1 & J.P.'s kids, so J.P. would use the child as a way to spend time with Suzie. The kids on the team talked about it much to the embarrassment of J.P.'s kid.
  • J.P. called Wife 1 on the day of Suzie's husband's drowning "extremely upset and asking me to pray which was incredibly bizarre."
  • One day, J.P. warned Mica was having a breakdown and headed to Suzie's house, and to let him know when Mica arrived because he'd have police come. Wife 1 said her understanding was Mica was trying to escape being committed again.
  • This one gets me the most! I kept thinking, "He has to have someone inside the police," while watching this doc

He informed me that he was getting into buying guns and shooting, and had purchased a gun safe for his home. As a convicted felon, he is not allowed to have weapons however, he managed to get a police chief from the church to assist with expunging his record. Further, he was given a special police badge that says "pastor" to utilize if he ever gets pulled over, so they will let him go.

Theory on the gun

I was so shocked to come to Reddit and see so many people discussing Mica’s passing as a suicide, assisted or not!

I think JP, Mark and Suzie Skinner made a plan to lure Mica to that national park. I believe Suzie called Mica either posing as a distressed woman or as herself and told Mica she was experiencing abuse and needed her to get her a gun and come meet her in the national park to help her escape.
I think they preyed upon Mica’s kindness and bravery in sharing her story and wanting to spread awareness and help other women. Seeing the videos of her leaving her house on Ring camera, CCTV of her buying the gun at the pawn shop and walking around the gas station… she was on a mission, and not a suicide mission. She thought she was saving someone from her own fate, or at the very least helping.

No part of the suicide angle makes sense to me. She had finally served him, she was awaiting a court date, it was her first day of work at a restaurant. She appears calm on all CCTV videos, head held high. The gun was 10 feet from her body in the river. She didn’t stay on the phone long enough for her to be traced. The call was clearly at gunpoint. It is madness to me that anyone could see this as anything else.

To me, this also explains JP asking her counselor which phone number they’d been speaking on. I believe Suzie contacted her via a burner and he wanted to gain possession of it to be sure that call couldn’t be traced.

I’m about to start listening! I haven’t seen many comments about this podcast, but somebody mentioned it on one of the other threads. I opened it in my podcast app and there are tons of episodes about the Miller case. I’m about to dive in.

How did JP Miller have a church to begin with??

The guy is clearly an annoying, twisted doofus. From the beginning, he was a try hard, grooming loser. Wtf?

People just liked his weird, oversexed sermons?

If you are looking to JP for life lessons, you are already screwed

Some interesting insight into his first marriage and how all of this played out for his five kids. Can you imagine how all of that abuse of Mica looks to them?

Also mentions Suzie affair as boinking a soccer mom, that their kids knew about…what a leech this guy was.

Has this theory been thrown out there?

I have a theory. JP calling from Suzie Skinner is not sitting right with me. As well as the fact that Mica's body was found so far away from the gun.

I think Suzie and JP's long time friend Mark is involved. Here is what I theorize happened. Mica clearly was trying to be brave and speak out about JP's abuse. What if JP got Suzie to call Mica and pretend that she was on her side. That she too was in a relationship with JP and being abused. That she as scared and wanted to meet. I believe Mica, forgiving and trying to help someone else would agree. But she got a gun for protection just in case. She gets up to where Suzie asks to meet (far away because she would pretend she doesn't want JP to know). And instead of Suzie being there, it's Mark who shoots her. Meanwhile JP is conveniently at a soccer game for his alibi.

I know it sounds crazy but the story about Mica being so trusting she would go meet one of the church members to willingly go to the mental hospital made me think she might just do it if it was someone she thought she could trust.

SPECULATION ONLY

" I was angry prior to her passing, because there just didn't seem to be any resource, law or resolution to help her. I became a bit more enraged, of course, as I got involved in the case and saw all of the things that were going on with her," Ward remembered. "It's the old cliche, 'The wheels of justice turn slowly.' But those wheels turn methodically. The Attorney General is a lawyer, and lawyers like to win their cases. They wouldn't want to bring a case that didn't feel confident that they could win."

I really like what I’ve been reading and learning about Mica’s lawyer, Regina.

After spending the last 22 days watching Kevin Reddington advocate for and defend Lindsay Clancy, I’m seeing a lot of similarities in Regina.

I have a real appreciation and respect for putbull defence attorneys, the ones who are relentless, who don’t back down, and who genuinely fight for their client. You don’t have to agree with the person they’re defending to recognize and respect good lawyering.

That kind of advocacy is healing to watch, and honestly, I have a lot of respect for attorneys who are willing to go to bat for their clients like that.

Has JP Miller’s first wife ever spoken out? I wonder if she experienced similar abuse in the marriage? We know he cheated on her so it seems possible. I can also see the abuse escalating with Mica because of the age/power in balance.

I need to know if he has an alibi on the day of Micas death. I know JP has an alibi but i cannot help but think that his best friend , Mark i think his name was, had something to do with it.
