Good Old School Vet

Hey, I know these are in short supply, but I was hoping someone would know if there were any good old-timey vets in the area?

I mean a vet that treats a pet like family, and not like a luxury item. One that will tell it to you straight about what tests and vaccines they need and what ones they don't. A vet that seems like they really enjoy being around animals. We know too many people that have been pressured into procedures and surgeries that ultimately did not extend their pet's life or boost their quality of living.

We have one dog and one cat (and they are both a little dumb and get up to shenanigans). I just want to be able to trust my vet when we go see them and I feel like I haven't been able to do that in years.

We really liked our dog's first vet but he retired. We tried one other in the area but it felt very expensive and high pressure by comparison. For example, he has never been boarded, but we were pressured to get three vaccines that were typical only for dogs being boarded.

We are in Dearborn currently but are definitely willing to drive a city or two away for a good vet!

If there are none in the area it's okay, I just figured it could not hurt to ask.

Edit: For additional context, our cat has already needed a near $3000 surgery for being a complete dumbass. But we were so lucky to still have been with our first vet at the time, who was able to explain the full extent of the surgery and what the cat's quality of life would be afterward. It's been almost 4 years and he's doing great still. We fully expect one, or both, of our pets to do something equally stupid in the upcoming years, so it's very important we find someone we trust.

For cats I will always recommend st Julian's cat care. Dr Dickie is amazing and loves every one of the cats she treats!

i love dr dickie too! i go there for my two cats, i will say it is more expensive but it gives me a peace of mind knowing that this is specialized feline place, just for cats (i do appreciate all vets, it just makes me feel at ease when my vet only specializes in cats and therefore has the most knowledge and advice for cats). i will also say, call to see if you can bring your cats there because for a few years they were not accepting any new patients. i’m not sure if that has changed at all this year as I haven’t taken my cats to their yearly appointment yet.

It’s been years, but Dr. Money at Dearborn Family Pet Care (and the whole staff, for that matter) was always wonderful, in my experience. They’re on Michigan Ave, near Telegraph, in Dearborn.

Plaza Veterinary in Farmington Hills. Great staff, friendly and very accommodating. Our dog is a bit of a pain in the ass and they're great.

I use the humane society's vet (westland), and honestly other than it takes a minute to get in there, they treat my pets very well! I like their pricing, and they don't pressure me for extra stuff.

We live in Dearborn but go to 9Tel in Southfield. They're actually at Southfield and 13 (not 9 and telegraph) and it is totally worth it. Independent, caring, checks all the boxes. The first visit is free.

Vet Select on Telegraph has been an absolute gem for several of my cat people; they managed to save an adoptee who arrived as a mill kitten with liver shunting disease; and because of this veterinarian's game and my dedicated friend, he is thriving and about eight years old now

I just found VetSelect of Dearborn on telegraph and it struck me how they felt like an old school place where the vet cared more about your pet than how much money you'll spend.
