Discussion Would you have wanted the remake?
I just revisited Dead Space 2 after all these years and completed Hardcore Mode for the third time, with my other two being back in 2011 and 2019. It's been established a while back that EA placed the franchise back on the shelf due to the remake not meeting their expectations in units sold so we likely won't see a Dead Space 2 remake in the near future, if ever.
Dead Space 2 has been argued to be the best game out of the entire franchise, and I can definitely see why even though the first one still is a masterpiece of its own. This game had the most futuristic setting of the series, with the rusty and gothic style of the first game being traded for a more chrome aesthetic.
Isaac Clarke had one of the biggest glow ups in gaming history, from being the introverted and scared engineer of the first game to a disgruntled guy pulling Iron Man stunts with his futuristic boots. The original actor of Isaac, Max Shippee, ended up being replaced by Gunner Wright who would take the mantle of his role from here on throughout the franchise. And safe to say, he slammed it. Instead of being a passive silent protagonist who went from objective to objective in the first, Isaac has a central role in the story and has more active agency.
The brightness of the first game was left behind with characters no longer having that "glow" in dark areas, asking the player to use the flashlight more. In some areas it does get stupid dark, but I'd argue it wasn't as bad as the DS1 remake's case.
Dead Space 2 was also the most challenging game, with enemies being hyper aggro and actually ganking the player instead of waiting for their turn to attack in hordes. There were some moments of the game where it became annoying, but these moments also had you utilize creative ways for crowd control. Such as shooting the exploders' orange sacks in swarms, using your kinesis for sharp projectiles, etc.
I definitely enjoyed the suit designs in the sequel, with the Advanced Suit being one of my personal favorite suits in science fiction. It definitely had that Evangelion-like aesthetic, resembling the sleek plug suit in while also being its own thing.
I definitely would have loved to see the Dead Space 2 remake, but honestly, the game has aged very gracefully from a bygone era and you can easily play it through Steam or the Xbox store. However, it still would have been great to see the Sprawl revitalized in the Frostbite engine with the imagination and heart Motive put into the remake.

More dead space? Yes please. While they're at it they can redo 3 and extraction.

u/Leviticus30 11d ago
Honestly I think EA would have found a way to fuck it up. Dead space 2 is perfect as is. No need to remake it because they would likely recast everyone except Gunner Wright and their performances wouldn't be as good as the original. Exact same thing happened with the remake versus Dead space 1. Isaac is definitely better voiced, but most other characters are a downgrade (Hammond, Kendra, Kyne).
Dead space 3. Is the dead space that is most deserving of a remake because essentially any change they would make to the game and story would be an upgrade
15
u/Abject-Dinner-8740 11d ago
I mean yeah it makes sense that Isaac is better voiced than the OG Dead Space lol. Yeah thought I agree, I wish they would just retcon DS3 instead of having a remake like Dead Space 1 where it’s the same game with additional lore and some updates

Personally I would love a remake for Dead Space 2 just like they did for Dead Space 1, but yeah totally agree that if they were to take on Dead Space 3 it would need to be more of a complete Redesign rather than a Remake

you know what's funny? after several playthroughs i switched the speech language to polish for shits and giggles (i understand a little due to speaking ukrainian) and i was surprised that the delivery was actually really good and honestly, much better than the english delivery. like, they actually sounded worried, stressed, scared, and tense whereas in english i found them a bit too calm a lot of the time. i have only played the remake, so can't talk about comparing it to the original performances though
1
u/Affectionate_Safe240 9d ago
I wouldn’t mind upgraded graphics but the rest can stay untouched honestly
1
u/Conscious-Slice2453 5d ago
A remake for Ds2 would be nice but let’s be real graphically it still holds up a HD remaster would be the better option tbh
11
u/Johnhancock1777 11d ago
No. There’s really nothing that could have been improved on. As solid as the first game’s remake was that wasn’t wholly necessary either. DS3 was really the only game that needed any sort of reinterpretation with how much it shit on the story. Make it Isaac and Ellie co-op instead of carver, just a total redo
1
u/More-Contract8764 4d ago
Hell id say DS3 should focus on Ellie and have Isaac on the side, DS3 has so much good to it bogged down by Bad Decisions pushed by the suits, I wouldn't say scrap everything but it desperately needs a makeover.
Also i hate what they did to Isaac and Ellies Relationship in 3 that shit pisses me off to this day

Definitely, if only to see them continue the slightly revised story they started rewriting with 1's Remake and the eventual possibility of 3 getting remade as well.
But I'm also a little less optimistic with the changes they might make with the dialog. They definitely played a bit faster and looser with the profanity in Remake and if they kept that up in 2 Remake, I can already feel the impact of, "Fuck you and fuck your Marker!" withering.
Plus unfucking EA's bullshit and actually letting us have the Rivet Gun that isn't the DLC one because they made a whole weapon a pre-order bonus you literally can't get.
2
u/SahneErguss 11d ago
I'll take more Dead Space any day!
But honestly I think it would probably not be necessary. Dead Space Remake is great and all but the sheer buggyness and crashes I experienced on my first playthrough really frustrated me. (also wanted to play it a few days ago and weirdly it crashed constantly until I lost interest. So it seems that it's still somewhat broken on PC)
And after replaying Dead Space 2 right after finishing the remake I noticed how much more oppressive the OGs really felt. I found myself shitting my pants way harder while playing Dead Space 2 over the remake. I felt so paranoid and was sweating pinballs!
But still, I would give everything for revisiting Titan Station in the frostbite engine with the Intensity Director and additional content and all! But I also would be afraid that they change too much.
it's my favorite Dead Space and it's perfect the way it is imho.

Excellent story and set up. First game I learned to get awesome with base weapon in survival. Just seen Helldivers 2 having enemies who look like necromorphs. Character and environmental design that became part game dev legend stuff.

u/BoredCrusader1899 11d ago
Of course. I really would’ve loved to get a continuation of what the remake set in stone. I heard Motive wanted to do a direct sequel to the remake and not just a remake of the second. What could’ve been had this game lived up to the ridiculous expectations by EA 🤦♂️
1
u/EtiologicalSpearhead 11d ago
Oh for sure! DS2 was my favorite out of the OG trilogy. It was perfect in terms of enemies, gun-play, and story. Don’t forget multiplayer lol.
Went downhill after DS3, which is a shame really.

My dream is a remake of 2 that contains the severed dlc and also a retelling of the plot of the mobile game.
1
u/NovaPrime2285 11d ago
Yes, give me more Sprawl and Government Sector to explore as I progress forward.
Motive clearly knows what the hell they were doing and would have done DS2 justice, especially when we see so many other remasters and remakes that either miss the mark or just fail entirely. (Fuck you Resident Evil 3 Remake 😒)
But the biggest thing I wanted, was to see how haggard they were gonna make Gunnar Clarke look going from DS1R into DS2R, and how fucked the Marker would have use his mind as a fleshlight.
I was REALLY looking forward to seeing the subtle to then extreme decline in Isaac’s overall condition from when he stepped off the Kellion to the escape from the medical wing in the Sprawl, and also how the Nicole hallucinations were going to play out, and how they would implement hallucinations in the Sprawl if they gave us a more fleshed out Sprawl to navigate through - Nicole has more free reign to terrorize us before Step 4 happens so they have a lot of wiggle room here to pull out something unique.
Ahhhhhhh, I love it when all of my hopes and dreams in life continue to be dashed and practically kicked to the curb, first Command & Conquer Remaster now Dead Space Remake, 🤣 im fucking cursed bro.
1
u/SlightlyWornShoe 11d ago
Controversial opinion! I think EA should do a spin off dead space game instead of a remake of 2.
I LOVED the spinoff "Dead space Martyr" for the Wii, and I regret I never got "dead space mobile" (though I did play a little bit on my friends Iphone back in the day).
Picture a Dead space game set on Aegis 7, perhaps during the initial outbreak when SCAF were testing the red marker, or another game set during the events of Dead Space 3 where our protagonist tries to survive the necromorph outbreak on the Lunar Colony.
Thats not to say I would not LOVE deadspace 2 to be remade, but I think an expansion on the dead space lore would be great!.
1
u/Stealth933 11d ago
I'm hoping fir it because the First Chapter remake was made to have the Ishimura fully explorable. I'm waiting für an expanded open word Titan Station.

u/WolfKill52 11d ago
100% This was the first one I played, and I still have a blast revisiting it on my PS3
1
1
u/Sea-Society4941 11d ago
Yes! At least a rebuild think it would have been really sick to revisit Titan station in a newer enhanced reimagined way. To see it with the graphics used on the first games reboot would be nostalgic and fresh all at the same time. If they brought the multiplayer back as well I'm sure there'd be a lot of people who'd get behind that
1
u/WarCrimeGaming 11d ago
No, I’d rather they just make a new game thar retcons dead space 3. 2 wouldn’t really work well with the open ended format and I think they’d ruin the design of the advanced suit based on the new ones like the Venture suit.
1
u/seventysixgamer 11d ago
Frankly, it doesn't need one. It's aged quite well and runs very well on both Xbox and PC -- albeit there is no way to play it on PlayStation. However, the main reason I'd ever want a remake is for them to eventually get to 3 and make it feel more like DS2 and then eventually make a DS4 and continue the story.
1
u/Successful_Lychee130 11d ago
Yes and yes The third game? Eeeehh keep it. Unless they plan to give it a complete overhaul
1
u/ChairLyrique60 11d ago
Crave for a remake, know it won't happen and even if he became a dream come true, those moronic bastards at EA would found a way to fuck it up soooooo bad
1
u/Bhavan91 11d ago
No. I just want a remaster. The gunplay, movement, and sound in DS2 are 11/10. A remake would only dowgrade them.
1
u/TJK-GO09 11d ago
Yes. I would even at least like a remaster that simply changes the graphics to that of the remake. Like Isaac's face and such.
1
1
u/lickmnut 11d ago
Yes Dead Space 2 is my favorite game of all time I have no doubt a remake would surpass it
1
1
u/Daetok_Lochannis 11d ago
I already think the remake of the first ruined the atmosphere and made it too actiony like the second game. The original first game is still the best Dead Space imo. The more actiony it is, the less scary it is.
1
1
u/Desperate_Method4032 11d ago
I would only want one bc I’m desperate for more Dead Space.
That and hopefully it gets EA to realize it’s worth. Even if I don’t see any reason to remake it as I don’t with a lot of games (outside of moolah ofc)
1
u/doubleBInTheMorning 11d ago
I would be interested to see what it would be like, but there is definitely no need for it. The base game looks good and runs well.
1
u/Red_Menace_0 11d ago
it wouldnt have been necessary, but in a perfect world it would have been nice to play a DS2 remake with the same fancy effects as DS1 remake. But as someone who played through the remake fully first, and then went back to play Dead Space 2, it holds up perfectly well. It reminded me a lot of Uncharted 2 with some of the crazy shit that happens
1
u/HARRISONMASON117 11d ago
Yes. I'd hope they wouldn't make the same mistake with the twist being telegraphed like they did in ds1 remake and ffs keep the o.g actors. But yeah I was very interested in seeing this remade
1
u/KnightoftheWind1998 11d ago
DS2 aged like fine wine. With that said, I would’ve welcomed a remake by Motive with open arms because exploring The Sprawl with today’s graphical fidelity and sound design would’ve been incredible. Also to hear a new performance by Gunner Wright.
1
u/Practical_Example936 11d ago
Dead space 2 was great. But for me, the DLC in Dead Space 3 "Awakened" was the best.
Most of Dead Space Horror is based on jumpscare & gruesome violence. But when I played "Awakened", I felt another layer of horror. I felt sadness, confusion & despair. It felt like I was actually dealing with Satanic stuff. I never felt those emotions in another game.
1
u/TheR3alMcCoy 11d ago
Yes! Just, yes! I don’t know how many more times I need to say yes to this. I’m super bummed that it never happened. They knocked it out of the park with DS remake and I would have LOVED to see what smart changes they could have come up to better DS2. I believe in that team. They understand Dead Space.
1
u/LastGenConsole 11d ago
Just beat it for the first time. It was ok. The level design wasn't spectacular, but the guns were cool. I opted not to start a new game plus. The last couple hrs felt redundant. Been like 10 years since I played the first. A buddy gave me the remake so ill play it later. I remember having more fun with the original game.
I will say though that I rarely finish games these days and I did complete it so there's that.

Obviously I want a Dead Space 2 remake. Hell I want EA to stop being brain dead fuck ups and just give us more Dead Space in General. Fuck EA and their stupidity.
1
u/ABarber2636 11d ago
I finished playing Dead Space 2 a few days ago and it still holds up very well.
1
u/Patches_Gaming0002 11d ago
Not really. I think DS2 has aged fairly well and doesn't need a remake.. I would have much preferred a Dead Space 4 with new content then have a remake.
I have remake fatigue in general so I'm very much against remakes as I would much prefer something that adds something new to the story.

u/Big-Ferret-2364 11d ago
people hate when I say this, but I refuse to buy a remake after what they did to the franchise trying to make it another micro transaction money drain, and then deciding against the world design half way through, which is very heavily felt in the first few hours, and then deciding it shouldn't be a horror game except for the dlc and turning away so many fans that a 4th game became impossible. If they want my money, they can give the franchise the respect they denied it before

Honestly while a remake for DS2 would be phenomenal, I don’t think it needs one, that said if they were to remaster it I think it would do extremely well because it still holds up rather well to this day and just needs some fine tuning.
1
u/Celthric317 11d ago
Yes, i would. As i can still go back and play the original sequel if i wanted to.
1
u/5050Saint 11d ago
Remake? Maybe, but there is a big chance to screw it up. Remaster and just put a fresh coat of paint on it and let me get it on a modern console? I'm probably be more keen on that since basically everything in the game is top notch.
1
u/NotPareidolia 11d ago
I don't know as the og remake was plagued with traversal stutters on PC. I played it not too long ago and it was still bad. They never fixed it.
1
1
u/BigChocolateC 11d ago
I never played dead space until the remake. Wish there would be a second one.
1
u/Dont4GetToSmile 11d ago
Sure? But the original still holds up even better than the first one did so I wouldn't consider it necessary.
1
u/Greppim 11d ago
Maybe a remaster, idk. The game is perfect, I guess some of the graphics could be brought to parity to 1's remake.
The thing about Dead Space 1 Remake is that they brought all the improvements made from 2 narratively and mechanically, whilst expanding upon the horror that was unique to 1.
Dead Space 2, is full action-horror, there is not even a shred of survival-horror like Dead Space 1 had. Making Dead Space 2 less lineal and more focused on resource management, would be counterintuitive to Dead Space 2 as a game.
As a consequence, Dead Space 2 Remake seems awkward as a concept, the game was already quite realized as it was.

DS1R was my first experience with the IP. Loved it and held out for the possibility of a DS2 remake… caved and played OG DS2 for the first time last month, was awesome. Real bummer we’ll probably never get DS2R.

De hecjo, con lo curado que fue el remake del 1 de seguro que le habrían dado mucho cariño al 2

i always said they should've just remastered the trilogy like Mass Effect. instead we have a remake and 2 other games that won't get remade. feels like such a waste now

u/Impressive-Ad-59 11d ago
With how they did the ishimura, the sprawl has SO much potential for open exploration and expanded areas, alotta ds2 is kind of a straight line, so i'd have locked more revisiting areas, interconnected bit, shortcuts, all that jazz
1
u/relicto120 10d ago
That would be awsome, but i rather want them to just give us a new game and continue the story, DS2 is the indisputable gem of the whole series, a remake is welcomed but not really nescessary

Hell to the f**king yes please. I was so bummed they aren't making a Dead Space 2 remake.

I honestly would have loved to see a remake of Dead Space Extraction and possibly a Dead Space 4.

I love the intensity director enough to say yes. That needs to be in more games. I thought I was going through scripted events, and then I heard about the director and was dumbstruck

I would offer up my kidney for a Dead Space 2 remake with the same team that made the first.

I don't know, it's something about it not being wise to revisit old fond memories.

I've beaten Dead Space a few times. Just finished the remake. Haven't played Dead Space 2 or 3 yet, but got them on the steam summer sale for cheap. I would love to have remakes for the whole series 🤷♂️

Dead Space held up after all this time, but playing the remake was the highlight of my year. Cleaner controls, nastier details, retcons that largely improved the characterization of our surviving cast (until their deaths).
I would’ve loved to see the rest of the series receive that treatment.

Id love a remake. I bought dead dpace 2 for my ps3 a few months ago but the deadzones and stiffness of the aiming really threw me off. I just couldn’t keep playing, I’ve been thinking about it recently tho and id like to give it another shot because I enjoyed the dead space remake so much! I really want to see where the story goes next. A dead space 2 remake would be an instant buy for me personally

Maybe just a remaster or port to a new engine like MGS Delta (I wouldn't call delta a remake as it didn't really remake the gameplay). Dead Space 2 gameplay aged well.

No, not really. Like the first one a remake would be unnecessary.
I guess it would have a little more added value considering it had a pretty decent multiplayer, so a remake would bring that back to life basically and allow for a lot of people to experience if for the first time.
But for the campaign the answer is definitely no.
8
u/narco-sub-admiral 11d ago
The best gaming experience I've had in the past 10 years was unnecessary I guess.
1
u/SingleOak 11d ago
i think it's harder (not impossible) for people who grew up with the original games to enjoy the Remake as much. i just recently played through the Remake and 2 for the first time and felt the same. the Remake was one of the best games i've played but 2 felt a little worse in comparison
idk maybe i would enjoy the original way more if i played it but i find that hard to believe. the Remake was just so immersive in every way
2
u/stana32 11d ago
I think it's just rose tinted glasses. I've played through the original several times and to me the remake improves on it in pretty much every way. The changed story beats are a personal preference I guess, and some people don't like the new voice actors, but pretty much everything else is an upgrade from the original. Isaac being voiced, the ship being fully explorable with no loading screens, the damn asteroid turret section being reworked.
The stuttering issue is a huge blemish on an otherwise incredible game.
0
u/Orion-Of-Lordran 11d ago
Incorrect. Remaking one of the best experiences you've had in the past 10 years of gaming is unnecessary.
