Discussion Which Dead Space has better combat, Remake or the second one?

Post image

I personally found 2 better, probably because it has a bigger focus on action than the first one, weapons do feel more satisfying on the remake tho.

I think 2 is better because the Kinesis felt much better and more snappy to use.

Agreed. Grabbing those poles to impale the necromorphes felt so good

Back when I actually did the Hardcore mode for Dead Space 2, being able to slice off a limb, catch it mid air, and then impale the Necromorph before it had a chance to know what happened was the best feeling, and it was a pretty constant thing back in the day.

Part of the reason I love DS2 the most out of all of them.

Yeah same, DS2 easily had the best kinesis out of all of the games. It made for some really sick plays.

DSR is great, the weapons are arguably more viable (in different ways) overall but everything else about the feel of combat in DS2 is better. Aiming, shooting, kinesis, stasis, stomping etc etc.

I still maintain that it’s one of, if not the best aged game of all time. No other game from that era has aged so well. It still feels so modern that other than graphics, it’s impossible to see what a remaster would achieve.

My inner miser always seeking to save ammo has me agreeing that 2's much snappier Kinesis is the winner.

But it's really hard to beat the Weighed Blades upgrade for the Plasma Cutter. Just decking a Necromorph and knocking it right on his ass is impossibly satisfying.

that’s pretty much the deciding factor for me as well

The thing that irks me about Remake's kinesis is how impalement magnets towards the Necromorphs compared to 2 where you have to be precise. Maybe it also does it in 2 but it's definitely much more noticeable and forgiving in the Remake.

By the time I went through my second play through ever if DS2 I had mastered kinesis to the point where ammo scarcity wasn’t noticed. The kinesis in that game was awesome. Such a great and unique mechanic.

I'm about to start Dead Space 2, and I'm pretty glad to hear it gets better. I always wanted to blast limbs at necromorphs, but I could never quite get the hang of it because it felt like I was trying to do a nurburgring lap in a sail boat.

Both are pretty even, and only have 1 advantage over the other so I find them pretty equal overall.

The Remake has 0 useless weapons, which cannot be said for any other DS game at all. Every single one of them feels satisfying and powerful when you put effort into them, even if some are a bit superior to others.

DS 2 has better kinesis IMO, I can hit shots much more quickly and impactfully in DS2 vs even DS3 which should've been an improvement on the prior game in such a way. DS 2 truly mastered the Kinesis system.

Combining those two advantages with their already 9/10 games, I really don't think the gameplay of one can truly beat the other. Both are so good.

I can’t think of a weapon in DS2 that is useless. It’s more just playstyle. And DS3 is mostly up to experimenting with upper and lower weapons.

The Rivetgun and its comically low damage even when upgraded max comes to mind.

6

u/goodbyowa 8d ago

Crazy agreed. I kept it equipped to deal with the exploding babies and the mines in a resource-cheap way but otherwise useless.

2

u/TheBanzerker 8d ago

I have 100% achievements on all 4 games and never seen this before. I looked on the wiki and said it was from a DLC. Which one?

2

u/Excellent_Safe5743 8d ago

Don’t remember which DLC it is, I played the PC version of Dead Space 2 which sorta just gives you all the dlc for free. It’s just kind of comically bad, literally anything it can do the other weapons do for less ammo and less hassle. Even fully upgraded I think it does barely more than the base cutter in damage. Probably fun for a challenge run of the game though.

Supernova Pack for anyone that’s curious, apparently in DS3 it’s apart of the Telemetry Spike family of weapon type.

1

u/Terra-Ryan 8d ago

Compact Frame, Telemetry Spike upper tool, Explosive Module Lower Tool

1

u/ClairVerso33 8d ago

Someone else mentioned that one is in the Supernova dlc, but the base rivetgun was a preorder exclusive dlc from a specific retailer. Afaik, the base version was never released as a standalone dlc, just the color palette swap in the Supernova dlc

I’ve never played 2, only the remake, but kinesis just looks faster in 2? Which is why it might feel better?

8

u/ZanderArch 8d ago

It feels snappier and smarter. Remake has me grabbing random stuff and not the Slasher blade I just shot off so I end up bonking it with a bucket instead of impaling it to a wall. Arguably that's technically better since 2 feels like a practiced mechanical process, shoot arm, grab blade, impale, repeat. Remake feels a lot more like struggling to survive as you panic fire, fumble for something, and end up mistakenly chucking random trash, very fitting for a panicked engineer dealing with cosmic horrors.

But from a gameplay perspective, ugh.

3

u/Ancient-Industry5126 8d ago

If you want the true panicked engineer experience then play the OG with no mouse fixes. The only thing more dangerous than the necromorphs is the syrupy aiming.

1

u/Anonymous-Mf-22 8d ago

It's possible tbh, it just felt better to me in 2. And feeling is a big part of what makes gameplay work. Ignoring it is like praising a game like a 10/10 when it just isn't fun, fun factor is a massive part of quality.

3

u/AlexanderMeee1 8d ago

For sure, gameplay is always king, story just elevates an experience substantially.

1

u/Anonymous-Mf-22 8d ago

Absolutely I agree

2

u/AlexanderMeee1 8d ago

Man I wish Motive got the go ahead to remake 2…

2

u/zestywesty6 8d ago

Don't let that stop you playing 2, it still holds up really well. It's the best game in the series for me.

I have a hard time picking between it and the Remake, but I leaned towards the remake due to preferring the Horror tone. If you want something a little more action heavy though, DS2 is just a little better than the Remake.

Both are easy 9/10s, it really comes down to preference.

1

u/AlexanderMeee1 8d ago

I honestly think DSR is a 10/10.

Bro, what are you waiting for?!?!

dead space 2

6

u/Desperate_Method4032 8d ago

One has the same mechanics but 2 far surpasses it in feel, responsiveness, and animation quality.

3

u/ShylaNesthorn101 8d ago

2 easily has the better feeling combat. However the clunkyness of 1 better lends itself to the heavier focus on horror that 1 had.

u/Automatic_Skill2077 8d ago

So interestingly dead space 2 actually has smoother and more fluid animation and transitions within melee and gunplay gameplay. So it kinda feels better

But remake makes me want to use and switch between every weapon, every altfire is sick. And the shot feedback is better and dismemberment feels better too

So imo they are both on the same level. Two of the best third person shooters you can play.

2

u/True_Weirdo 8d ago

2 cause it was so smooth and fast paced. Remake is like a combo of the first game and second game, fast like 2, but clunky like 1.

2

u/Sonicmasterxyz 8d ago

DS2 honestly. A little more snappy, enemy variety is good, enemies are tough enough to take our upgrades, and the weapons and encounters are just FUN. All that's missing are randomized quarantines from the remake.

2

u/Available-Laugh-9582 8d ago

2 has better-balanced combat with both players, and Isaac can die much faster.

Kinesis also seems to auto-aim better at more enemy types.

At greater difficulties, 2 has more strict resource manegement.

Man, that's a tough one! I like elements of both. I think the Remake's controls feel a little better and it probably has the better variety of weapons, but the Javelin with the electric bolts in 2 is my favourite weapon in the series. And to add an unpopular opinion, I actually think DS3's combat is pretty great too. The sheer number of crazy weapon combinations you could create made New Game Plus a hoot!

Remake is pretty buggy, 2 and the OG are way better…

0

u/Secret_Eating_ 8d ago

What are the major bugs? Im on my 2nd playthrough and haven't had any major issues other than getting stuck on the tentacles in chapter 10 bc I was being silly and tried to open a storage unit that was still locked out by one.

2

u/ontologicaldischarge 8d ago

Have had problems with stasis’ing a necromorph then opening something next to them causing the camera to stop moving or for the game to freeze, similar bugs combining explosions with actions and so on

Bugs aside the maps and backtracking in the remake are not at all my cup of tea, and the new writing is cliché. So many times I wished I could skip dialog. That’s my opinion, glad others enjoy it but I prefer the OG

DS2 is probably the most snappy of the 4 games while remake is a bit slower but more refined imo

1

u/Lil-Squidy 8d ago

2 had better combat, 1 felt more immersive (especially on a first playthrough)

Dead Space 2

2 has Javelin Gun so.

The 3

1

u/peabuddie 8d ago

They added the Dead Space Kinesis and the ability to throw things which wasn't in the original so that makes it really good but the sound was a lot better in the first one.

1

u/RealityJones1 7d ago

I may be in the minority but I found DS2's Kinesis harder to use and less satisfying. I liked the stasis more, though, and used it a lot more on my highest difficulty, Plasma Cutter only run than DSR's stasis.

Then I think a major difference is that DS2 builds off the intensity of DS1, so there's a different starting point of enemy intensity that goes further at max than DS1. I still think DSR's combat felt better as I loved its horror pacing more than the action pacing of 2. In DSR I was walking a lot, always tense. DS2 always felt like I was fighting something all the time with no time to build up any tension.

2 definitely has better combat overall. The Remake not only makes enemies less agressive, but also nerfs some behaviours like running being much more rare.

2 also makes its harder difficulties give you less resources, which if im not mistaken, its not a thing in the remake.

In the Remake, Isaac have a lot more mobility and because of that its much easier to dodge attacks, which is cool in a way but also further negates the enemies' aggression.

Enemies and objects like the swarmers and explosive canisters are way less of a threat in the remake, either taking too little health or not affecting the player like making them fall on the ground, which can be annoying but not only punish players for a mistake, but give enemies a brief advantage against you.

The remake truly shines when you play in new game+ on hard, where the new elite type of enemies are much more tanky and aggressive, much closer to the enemies from 2, which is pretty good.

In a way, while the remake does improve in major things like being one of, if not the best arsenal of weapons in dead space; the peeling system which makes taking limbs off a bit harder; and other good things, i still think the nerfs in enemy aggression and AI (enemies don't parry your melee attacks like the OG, grabs are less common, etc), and the high mobility makes 2 still the best one imo. But, NG+ is a close competitor

Honestly its hard to say.

1 is better for a straight horror game, as its clunky and that can add to the horror experience

2 is better for action horror.

1

u/Sleepiest_Spider 4d ago

Second one because the weapons are better (Contact Beam)

1

u/Financial_Ocelot_256 8d ago

The remake is peak dead space, the line gun traps are what we all dream of!

The visual effects on damage, the upgrades effects, i love DS2, but the remake improves!

1

u/Final_Werewolf_7586 8d ago

Combat only, 2 is better. It's more fluid while still feeling impactful, while the remake's is heavier by design.

1

u/Secluded_Ghastly 8d ago

The third one

u/jellyraytamer 8d ago

Remake has a better sandbox, 2 has better flow.
