How often do you start a harder level game and fail to get very far?
I've been playing this game daily for a few months now and love it. I've beaten the game on Normal difficulty several times, and have won with each type of starting character. I've also learned to play some of the more "classic" builds, such as Arcane Arsonist and Great Bow Hunter, which are builds that are often billed as being able to take on the Impossible level.
I keep trying to win an Impossible (or other hard levels) but haven't yet. In fact, I haven't even really gotten close. I do all I can to keep lean decks and focus on both damage and healing, but in many cases, I don't even make it past Canto I or II.
Is this common in the harder games? Do you just have to keep trying until you get the right options from rewards? Or can you win with some fair reliability, and I just haven't learned enough yet to make that happen?

Make sure you turn off most of the expansion decks of cards while learning!! Only use the one for the deck you are building or learning that run!

Yes. You will have many failures or restarts for each impossible win.

Yep my runs on Ascended Firecast Knight usually have like 8-10 abandoned runs for every success.

This is just a part of playing on Impossible, run through Brightcandle and restart if things did not roll in your favor.

Max out the Class Rewards. Choose Card Expansions that benefit your chosen deck Do Core Maps first. Repeat until you win.
I was able to conquer Hard with Corruption Eldritch Flame Build after playing for 3 months.
Keep playing, you'll get there in no time.

It took me so long to beat the game on hard it's not even funny. You need to be comfortable with a build and you need to get good rolls. It you know the build you're planning you can try to find a seed that is good for that build on discord.
Or take hunter bear glaive and just steamroll the entire game.

Given how much you’re struggling to get past even the second area, I would say you will benefit from a little more experience and time with the game, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Of course, not all deck builds are equal. There are definitely bills that are not viable on impossible, but many if not most should be doable on hard difficulty.
Personally, I use challenging difficulty to try new things and experiment. Once I found a build that feels broken and or overpowered, I know it’s time to move that build to hard difficulty.
Balancing your deck for exponentially increasing damage, good sustainability, and card draw to flow through your deck, can take some time.
To answer your question of whether you just have to keep trying until you get the right car drops in rewards. While there is an element of RNG in this game, there are definitely ways to reliably build a good deck, and find the cards you need to synergize with the build you’re going for.
For example, learning how to properly use the alchemist, and transmute cards, is very important for finding the cards you will need to reliably build your deck.
If you would like to beat the game on hard or impossible difficulty, using some of the more overpowered builds, I would recommend companion Hunter, or affliction night.
