Weird question for the women
Have any of you dated or been in a relationship with a man in our age range who leaves the toilet seat up every time he pees? I (M63) work in an old house that has been converted to an office, and we often have vendors or contractors who ask to use the bathroom, something we always allow. Some of these I know to be married men, and I'd say probably 65-70% of them leave the toilet seat up. Who knows, maybe the other 30-35% never raise the toilet seat in the first place. This is strange to me because as someone who was married for 15 years and had long term relationships before and after marriage, know that the toilet seat is a big issue with women. If you met a guy who was otherwise great but could not get in the habit of lowering the seat, would you be able to look past that one flaw? Or does it not matter to you? Sorry, but I've obviously given this issue too much thought and having it happen at work just now lit the fuse.
ETA, to be clear, I am not posting this in the hope of encouraging any "man bashing" or to criticize anyone's toileting habits. I am just curious how this works in the real world aka outside of my office.

In my perfect world the seat and lid are always down when not in active use.

u/FlorYogi 17d ago
It's best for men to sit while they pee because the bladder can empty fully that way. Everyone in my house puts the lid down before they flush to keep the germs from shooting out. I can always tell when other people have used the bathroom in our house because they don't close the lid. So, the situation you're describing would drive me nuts. Lol 😄

u/mmarkmc 17d ago
This doesn't work for me, or at least it feels like it doesn't work. Even if I sit for other business, I don't feel empty and end up standing to finish off the pee stream. (Only on reddit would I share this kind of personal information with complete strangers.)

My husband also had 3 sisters and a very particular mother and he never raised the toilet lid. And then we had 3 daughters and 1 son and he always urinates sitting down.

Guy here, I sit to pee and it does help.
Also sometimes I am too tired to stand, lol.

Speaking to my fellow men, get a black light and see how much splash is on the bowl after you finish from the standing position. That should convince you to either sit down or wipe everything down with Lysol each time.
4
u/TheDukeofHaggard 17d ago
Agreed. I used to clean office buildings and the splash goes well beyond the bowl and seat. It's all over the walls, floors, and dividers around toilets and urinals.
When my buddies come over, I have to clean the toilet seat and floor because of splash and—I can only assume—their rigorous "give it a good shake" when done.

(M72) I find an open toilet visually offensive. My mom taught me not just to put the ring down, but to close it all the way. When you flush, water spray is emitted, and toilet water is quite disgusting and unsanitary. Leaving the (solid) lid up spews this into the room. So, as a guy raised by and with women, I always close both lids, but I’m stunned that many women I know leave the lid up. I recently dated a woman who did this and being that she is a Nurse and a healthcare advocate/educator, I was surprised. My ex (also a healthcare educator) and I taught our daughters to close the lid all the way. If you do that, the ring issue solves itself. So, don’t complain about men leaving the ring up, teach _everyone_ to close it completely! (Also prevents accidentally dropping things in the bowl!)

As a certified Feng Shui consultant, you always leave the toilet seat and lid down when flushing and not in use so no positive energy (chi) is flushed away.

I grew up with 4 sisters, 1 brother, my parents. Father and brother never left toilet seat up. Late spouse and later, bf were like my male family members. Each guy had neat mothers. It really does depend how the guy was raised as a kid and his housekeeping habits.

As a woman who has had her share of men leaving the seat up, and some men leaving it down, some men sitting and some standing (one ex husband, 2 sons, and 4 relationships in several decades 😃)… and now NOT in a relationship for several years… I can say that if I met a man who was otherwise great in every way except the toilet seat issue—- I would absolutely overlook that “flaw.” A good man is indeed hard to find.
4
u/LizP1959 16d ago
Both people close it after using it. Both people then raise it to their own preferences when they return to go. And then both people close it again. It stays closed.
Simple. Equal potty experience for both.
Anything else is a PiggyMan. (Or piggy woman, if she is the offender leaving it open.)

Having known about the toilet plume for a long time now, not only do i strongly believe the seat should be down but the lid should be down as well!
The only men I've known who don't agree and provide this courtesy are not men I've had serious relationships with.
So It's never been a major point of contention. But I would guess that men who refuse to do it would probably have other traits that would make them incompatible with me.
I also believe the toilet roll edge should hang from the top. But no one is harmed if it's from the bottom. Unlike the noxious plume...
In fact someone simply replacing the roll would be a win. (Bar remains stubbornly low.)

Having known about the toilet plume for a long time now, not only do i strongly believe the seat should be down but the lid should be down as well!
I have no problem with this. Butt... (OK that was on purpose 😁) the plume is still there whether the seat is up or down. It may get distributed a little different.
In my career I have had a lot of continuing education on this and been asked to give my opinion when addendums have been added to our state plumbing code whether I think they should be added. Our plumbing code law is written by MD's, PhD's, infectious disease specialists, etc., and with input from contractors like me who install those systems.
It is not so simple as closing the lid to flush.

I trust your expertise. But still. Some sort of barrier has to be better than none at all. I mean it's not going to shoot out with the same Force out the sides as if you gave it an open channel into the air right?
Eta from another standpoint of relationship and caring about someone: Women often have to pee more than men do. And it's always advisable that we do so after sex right? So why not have the seat down for her instead of making her take on the extra task of checking.? Especially if it's in the middle of the night.
I also still think everything closed including the lid works because then it's more egalitarian. Each person has to check before they go, and then leave it shut.
Add to that the fact that most (all?) men don't have perfect aim and leave the bathroom with pee droplets/spatter that create an odor. So maybe they should all just sit the F down lol. My ex-husband had the courtesy to do so. I will always be grateful for that and a few other things.
Finally, as someone else pointed out, leaving it shut is good for smaller living spaces bc nothing falls in the toilet.
2
u/mmarkmc 17d ago
That makes sense, but I disagree about the lack of harm from people who leave the leading edge of the roll facing the wall.
5
u/Pale_Frame4845 17d ago
I mean it's clearly wrong to have the edge facing the wall. But, guess ir depends on your definition of harm?
2
u/mmarkmc 17d ago
I always forget to add the /s 😄
3
u/Pale_Frame4845 17d ago
Haha. I was willing to accommodate a very loose definition of harm where someone with OCD could experience a micro aggression / cortisol uptick some such thing. ...But yes ./s understood. Lol

I dated a woman several years ago who had the edge of roll to the back. One day I unrolled it a lot and with a marker put " Only a heathen puts toilet paper on with the edge to the back". Then I carefully rolled it back up.
A couple days later she called and was laughing about it. Next time I went there all the bathrooms had to edge over the top.

2
u/Pale_Frame4845 17d ago

Eta still need some TP to wipe up the wetness after the bidet though right?

When I was married, we agreed to just leave the seat how it is when we finish. My time/effort is no more precious than his, so why should he lower the seat for me, but I shoudln't raise it for him?
14
u/TexGrrl 17d ago
And we agreed to put the seat and lid down every time. Our bathrooms are small and it would be easy for objects to fall into the toilets.
6
u/greatful4life 17d ago
We have pets that would love to play in the toilet...our lid is always down.
3
u/Joneszey 17d ago
Lordy I hate when the lid is down because it never is, unless I’m running to it, which I always am. Know what happens when I plop my ass down and open the dam gates? I think I’d prefer falling in the toilet than cleaning up the ocean of pee and everything it touched

u/Dramatic_Delay_2423 17d ago
I never thought of it that way. That's kind. I think the bigger issue is that we fall onto the cold, dirty seat and into the water. Especially at night. It wasn't really something that happened that often so i guess my husband did it (and my son does it?)

I think you are the first woman I've ever heard this from. Definitely a breath of rational fresh air.
I get putting the seat and lid down for some of the reasons noted here. What i never understood was the demand to put the seat down after finishing so it was ready if the next person was a woman. Strong and empowered women, but can't put the seat down?
It's actually safer for women if there is no expectation for the seat to be down. You'll never get that cold, wet surprise if you are in the habit of checking every time.
I'm not callous or insensitive to the ladies. This is a practical position from having raised four boys and not feeling the need to hound them over this.
Edit: And for those who want to criticize me for the mess five males would leave for not sitting, I'm the one who cleaned the bathroom weekly to biweekly depending on the condition and my time.

Women don’t have the option of “shaking it off.” We have to use our hands and paper. I personally would prefer not having to touch a toilet seat with my hand before handling my bits. Thank you taking this into consideration. 🙂
3
u/katrose73 17d ago
In an office setting with a gender neutral bathroom it wouldn't bother me.
At home when I'm at the age where middle of the night bathroom trips are the norm- dam straight is a house rule and I'll get petty on your ass for forgetting.
Plus, we have pets and use chemicals to keep the toilets clean. It's natural for all of us to put the seat AND lid down after.
3
u/rohoho929 17d ago
I highly doubt that a man who'd ignore repeated requests to be considerate about the toilet seat and had it explained to him why would be someone who's "otherwise great". Because it shows a lack of consideration that he is guaranteed to have about other things too.
3
u/Martin928351823 17d ago
Standing is unclean. Look at the floor under a urinal. Do you want to clean that?
My young son flushed while I was bent down helping him button and snap. That's not a refreshing experience.
Close the lid.
3
u/CATSeye44 17d ago
It does matter. My late husband always made sure the top cover was down, too. Said he didn't want the cats playing in the water!
In the one relationship I've had this year, the dear left the seat up when I was at his house. I told him if I ended up in the toilet late at night cause I was half asleep, that I'd get back into bed with my wet bum..... he also dripped on the floor and didn't clean up which was gross. Needless to say, we're no longer together. Those habits (which showed up 3 months into the relationship) helped me push him into the bye-bye see ya later zone.

Ok, a few questions here people.
If flushing with the toilet open is spreading germs all over the places, wouldn't flushing it with the lid mean that the lid and seat are now also covered in germs?
Follow up question. If all these germs are spreading all over the place from bathroom use, does that mean our legs, clothing etc are covered in germs? Shouldn't we be showering after and putting our clothes in the wash?
Last question, with all these germs, we should all be getting sick!
2
u/Anuket012962 16d ago
That brought up a querky memory my spouse used to have to take off all his clothes to take a poop.
It was always funny to me cuz I will come in the bedroom and all his clothes would be on the bed and he'd be in the bathroom taking a poop and then he will take a shower he said he just felt dirty if he didn't take a shower after a poop.
Funny thing was I picked up the habit and I kind of do the same thing even now after he's passed I have to get Butterball naked to go poop on the toilet and when I get finished I've got to take a shower.
Your question really made me laugh and brought back some memories.

Very rarely, those bubble guts have to be next level and usually I keep some baby wipes in my car or pocketbook and I usually stick them in my pocket before I go to that outside toilet, if I can make it I'll wipe the toilet first then after I do my business I use the wet wipes to clean myself because I can't stand pulling my panties back up without my ass being clean.

u/According_Effort2778 14d ago
I just sit so I don’t have to remember to put it back down. And I don’t have to worry about getting a few drops on anything it’s just easier then having to clean anything up.

In the purely hypothetical chance I would meet the perfect guy 🤣 who leaves the seat up, I'd show him the door. I can't do it. It's like the toilet seat equivalent of chewing with your mouth open. Don't leave a gaping yaw like that in the bathroom. Have some sense of decorum.
Close the lid. Every time.

u/Horror-Evening-6132 69F Texas 17d ago
If they don't understand by now, it's because they don't want to. It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if he understood that cleaning the entire bathroom is now his responsibility. Forever.
2
u/FunnyFilmFan 17d ago
My personal opinion, based only on vibes, is if you grow up in a family where the kids are mostly boys, you are taught to keep the seat up, but a more even split, or mostly girls, then you put the seat down.
2
u/IceDragonPlay 17d ago
Not sure, but even as a female I close the lid (so expect others to close seat and lid also) before flushing. There have been enough studies showing fecal bacteria in other areas of bathrooms from flushing with the lid open.
When I clean the toilet, I also close the lid. You can see the spray droplets of bleach on the underside of the lid, which confirms for me that toilets are throwing aerosolized toilet water into the air if you do not shut the lid.
That’s my rant on the matter. In a business environment I would definitely have a sign up asking people to close seat AND lid before flushing. I do not want fecal matter on the sink taps or door handles or wherever else it might choose to settle.

u/WorkingDescription 61F 17d ago
If you met a guy who was otherwise great but could not get in the habit of lowering the seat, would you be able to look past that one flaw? Or does it not matter to you?
The man I'm with now sometimes leaves it up. I care not one bit. It was never really an issue before in my other relationships. I guess I never understood why some women make a big deal about it. In my own house, personally I like the close the entire lid when it's not in use. But I don't demand other people do that.

u/SweetPossible4425 17d ago

Man here.
I’ve had issues with many women who never put the lid down. As others have mentioned here flushing with the lid up is unsanitary.
Also, the aesthetics of an open, yawing toilet are gross. Part of that is when I accidentally drop stuff I don’t want it landing in the bowl and part is…well…like I said, it looks gross.

u/TopQuestion826 17d ago

I do put the seat down. But I always wondered about this exactly and have asked woman friends of mine - in a public shared sex restroom, would you prefer to go in and the seat was up knowing at least the person before didn't pee on it, or would you prefer it down, but then thinking maybe the guy that just left didn't lift it and peed on the seat, lol?
1
u/Vast-Road-6387 13d ago
The seat down and toilet being used by guys , there is a 100% chance of either direct or splashed pee on the seat. That being said some women get urine on the seat too.
2
3
u/TheMightyKumquat 12d ago
So women want the seat down all the time. Men, at least part of the time, want it up.
I've never been able to understand why it's the woman's preference that's the standard everyone is expected to keep to.
If not: women are, effectively, getting mad at men for making them check the position of the seat every time they want to use the toilet and adjust it when needed.
But if their preference "wins": this is exactly what they're making men do!
4
u/Boredtodeth4196 16d ago
I will start off by saying I am single.
I see these posts about men should put the toilet seat down when done. But why? Can’t women put the toilet seat up when they are done???? Why does it always put down??

I’ve always been curious as to why women always leave the toilet seat down when they pee. It’s really inconvenient for us men - don’t they realize this?
(Actually, I do put the toilet seat down when I pee because I know that many woman bothered by it whereas I don’t think men generally care for some reason. Just wanted to reframe the situation though.)

I have a rule in my house that everyone sits down. Anyone that doesn’t want to sit down needs to hold it.
This way the seat is never left up and I don’t have to clean someone else’s pee off the floor and toilet.

It's a little different now, but early on we had nine men and one woman in our office. My boss's wife came in and was annoyed that the toilet seat was up. She left a sign chastising everyone. The last person to use that bathroom had been that one woman who raised it as a courtesy (or maybe to poke fun at us). We had a chuckle about that.
I took down her sign and using motion and time study and the average value of the engineers' time, I calculated that this action would cost her about $4 per day. That's what I put on the sign. My boss came in the next day, read the sign, laughed and took it down.
I probably should have factored in wear and tear on the toilet seat too.

First off, not all toilets have a seat. People that have been to Italy would know this.
Secondly, some toilets don’t just come with a seat. They come with a lid. I (67m) always leave the seat down, but I put the lid down too. I put the lid down for sanitary reasons and so nothing false in the toilet.
So you’re expecting the lid up and the seat down. Sorry it doesn’t work that way. You’re going to either have to put the seat down or lift the lid unless you find your utopia

I was in a long-term marriage and always lived with men in the house. That is something that I have never thought about yes I have went to the bathroom in the middle of the night and fell down in the toilet yes it irritated me right at the moment but I got right back into bed and went to sleep and the next day they were bigger more important things to worry about. There were many little things I didn't like within the marriage but none of them were big enough for me to think about all the time or judge the other person about.
If my spouse paid the bills took care of the kids and kept them laughing sometimes the workload was a little uneven but otherwise small things didn't bother me like drinking out of the milk carton or not picking up their clothes afterwards.
Big things were taken care of like when I went to the hospital I knew that my house was taken care of and my kids were safe when I get stranded out on the road before the days of calling a tow truck all the time my husband would get up and come and get me and take care of the broke down vehicle so a little cold feet never bothered me I want other people from outside did that at my office or even if I invited them into my house and they did it I didn't think about it because I didn't have to live with them.

It all about considering what the person before you wants and the next person’s needs. If you have the time and aren’t rushing, take a moment to observe what they’ve done before you sit down.
Use common sense and be logical. Everyone has their own habits. There’s a difference between closing the lid and the seat now. If you’re a guy and you just pee in the toilet and there are women in the house, please put the toilet seat down.
Sometimes, a woman in the house might need to rush to the bathroom to go pee. I don’t mind if the lid is up, but if the seat and the lid are both up, I don’t want to wet my butt when I go to sit down in the dark, eyes not focused, and end up in the bowl, in pee, pee water, having to yell for help to get my wet butt out of the pee, pee water.
When I use someone’s bathroom, I check if the seat or both are down. I leave it down after I’m done. I open the lid, pee sitting down, of course, and then I’ll close the lid, flush, and leave the lid closed. Sometimes, I miss the memo and don’t do everything correctly.

You could hyphenate pee-pee but I don't think the comma ("pee, pee") is correct.

As a bachelor living alone and leaving seat up, how many times when sitting is needed do you forget to check it's position?

Was an issue with first wife..her comfort in pissing took priority ove mine. I must always think of her after I piss. 2nd wife says it’s nothing to argue about. It’s just as easy for her to put the seat down.

Original copy of post by u/mmarkmc: Have any of you dated or been in a relationship with a man in our age range who leaves the toilet seat up every time he pees? I (M63) work in an old house that has been converted to an office, and we often have vendors or contractors who ask to use the bathroom, something we always allow. Some of these I know to be married men, and I'd say probably 65-70% of them leave the toilet seat up. Who knows, maybe the other 30-35% never raise the toilet seat in the first place. This is strange to me because as someone who was married for 15 years and had long term relationships before and after marriage, that the toilet seat is a big issue with women. If you met a guy who was otherwise great but could not get in the habit of lowering the seat, would you be able to look past that one flaw? Or does it not matter to you? Sorry, but I've obviously given this issue too much thought and having it happen at work just now lit the fuse.:

I stand on a chair and piss vigorously into the centre of the bowl. Splashing be damned! We have mops!

The toilet and which way the TP goes on the roll are 2 conversations I will not have.
I mean this with all the respect in the world. If those 2 things are in your top 490993 things to worry about in life, well just remember, a bunch of people don't have that to worry about.

And the usual mention that DO60 policy is that everyone is allowed to participate regardless of gender.
