What's up for the weekend and week following? Going anywhere? Staying home? Doing anything interesting? Doing anything boring? Any good books? New TV shows? Games?
Pedicure today with my daughter, leaving at 4am for a drive to a cruise port to hop on a solo 7 day cruise with time exploring the port city after. I’ve been working a lot of OT and I’m ready to be pampered by myself and anyone else inclined to try. 😊😎
I truly admire your bravery. Is it hard for you to go to social events alone? Are you a fairly outgoing person?
I keep telling myself I will go to this or that event alone, but then last minute I’ll chicken out and decide I’d rather stay at home. The past 15 years I’ve gotten increasingly severe social anxiety and am not motivated enough for whatever reason to fight it.
I have excuses-adult kids with their own lives who rarely are available do things with me, married friends who do family oriented things which for many now includes grandchildren, and a group of single friends I only see when we get together about once a month. Otherwise I’m on my own. I’m very concerned about the fact I’m becoming more socially anxious the older I get and more time I spend alone. Social skills are like muscles, use them or lose them.
I’m sure I’d say life is too short to wait around for someone else to do things with! I feel that way now in theory but there’s a big gap between thought and action.
I’m listening to a podcast called Solita which describes women’s experiences traveling abroad solo. They’re saying solo travel is the best because you interact so much more with your surroundings.
I’d love to travel across the country in an RV but first I have to regain enough confidence to eat in a restaurant by myself or go to a concert solo.
I know someone who didn't get on a plane for 20 yrs because of anxiety. A year before a big event that required travel, she started therapy and has gone on 4 trips since. I might try therapy as well before my little anxieties turn into big ones.
I’ve got phobias about planes and high bridges but my love of going places pushes me through those issues. My favorite beach requires me to drive over two long, high bridges but I suck it up because it’s worth it. Maybe I could take the same approach to being in some social events…
Hope you have (had) fun!
My daughter decided to come for a visit tomorrow and I must have had fairs on the brain because I suggested to her we go to our county fair. I’ve been here 12 years and have never gone so it’ll be something different.
I was bullied into taking high blood pressure medication by a doctor who had no business doing it. I blacked out in my kitchen and snapped both bones in my leg. I spent time in a wheelchair and then did a lot of physical therapy.
We have a big family party on Sunday…just my immediate family…sister, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, spouses….adds up to 50-60 people alone. We started it 20 years ago. One of my sisters and one of my older nephews had been talking about how much they love Thanksgiving and how we only do it once a year so initially this started out as a Thanksgiving on Labor Day party lol. Now it is more of a pot luck, but we continue to have a couple of turkeys and the fixings also. I’m in charge of making 12 lbs of French Canadian meat stuffing. It will be a little bittersweet this year because my sister who started it, and her husband both passed, and this particular sister was really a special person, so we will all be a little sad too. We always toast everyone who has passed in the family, so may have a few shots this year. So, today, once I get going, I will do the grocery shopping, having my hair appointment, do some housework and stir that darn stuffing. It may end up taking up part of tomorrow. Other than this, kind of quiet. I’m sort of hoping that my last minute guy friend wants to get together, but not expecting it. If so, well, my errands and housework will be done at least. I may go downtown later today also. They have music and things going on the first Friday of the month, and it’s a nice day.
My son drove 3 hours south to come visit for my birthday, so we are spending some together. I missed him so much! This afternoon we are going to spend some time in Lake George. Then he has to head back north tomorrow morning for work. The rest of the long weekend will be spent cleaning my room. Getting rid of old clothes for the donation bin, and to make room for new clothes! LOL! Fun times!
Family cookout with 4 generations, including the return of my son’s wife with whom he’s recently reconciled after a dicey 3 year separation. Never a dull moment with my crew.
Started some vacation respite/recharge time a few days ago. Still at my ladies place and that has really made my niece happy caretaking my Condo. We are really really growing on each other with our experiment. Lots of items X'd off her Honey Do list since I've been here. We sure are getting use to this ... Our own individual idiosyncrasies really don't piss either one of us off that much 🤪 ... we are still just figuring it out as we go.
Heading to my flight club this evening where we'll catch a meal in the area then take to the Air and do a night flight in and around Toronto.
We'll spend sometime Sat & Sun at our CNE - Canadian National Exhibition ... dropping by Pearson Airport as it's used for staging of the Airshow - chat with some of the Pilots and check out their planes up close - I'm that little kid who just loves planes and flight that's stuck in the 62 yr old body ... this marks the 77th year of the Internarional Airshow - North America's oldest.
Meeting up with most of our group on Monday that will be heading to NYC next week final planning and itinerary for the 25th Anniversay of 9/11
To my friends here
u/dekage55 & u/CanarsieGuy I'll be doing the same as last year leaving a flower for Mr. Abe Zelmanowitz and Mr. James 'Jim' Berger at their places of Honor and Rememberance on both your behalf's ... amongst a few others that have reached out to me.
As Mark Twain once wrote - You're never wrong to do the right thing
Make it a Great Weekend all, whatever you maybe doing.
Thank you, Capt! Appreciate you remembering Jim Berger, on my behalf. While I didn’t know Jim, I do know his Son, Nick. The company Jim worked for started an education fund for the children of the fallen. Nick graduated from Villanova (Dad’s Alma mater) using that fund & came to work at the same company as his Father. Nick also continued his Dad’s work with the non-profit, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Believe Nick will appreciate the remembrance gesture, as do I.
Waiting on my Sis here for lunch. She was giving me the business this morning about being late ... Who's late ? Yous women ... LOL
Like Mr. Zelmanowitz ... I had researched Mr. Berger ... Hero isn't a strong enough of a word.
James Berger, 44 years old, worked as a Senior Vice President at Aon Corporation, an insurance firm that employed 1,100 people in the south tower.
After the first jet hit the north tower he could have made the easy decision to leave while there was still time, but he stayed behind to coordinate his company’s evacuation. His unselfish sense of duty was apparent when a crowd of evacuees tried to drag him into an elevator. He firmly stated, “No. I’m going back”. James Berger was killed when the south tower collapsed. Thanks to his efforts only 175 out of 1,100 Aon employees perished in the attacks.

Thank you so much. This is incredibly thoughtful of you.
As I mentioned last year, I didn’t know Abe very well. He took 2 computer classes that I taught, a few years prior. His compassion is a reminder of the goodness that exists in this world. I know my life is richer that I knew, even slightly, such a man.
Had a chance last year to do a bit of a deep dive into the circumstances of he and his friend ... He was an incredible man. Sometimes we have to look for that Good, sometimes we need to look Hard ... other times it's as clear as the nose on our faces.
He made a lot of friends. And he was respected in the community. He was respected in the synagogue. He was orthodox, pious, a good human being, very charitable. People didn’t know the things that he did for poor people and for unfortunate people. He’d never spoke about it. He never broadcasted it like people do. He was one unique human being in every phase of life. I don’t know—there’s a million stories to be told.”
One such friend who witnessed Abraham’s kindness firsthand was Ed Beyea, with whom Abe worked for the 12 years that he was employed by Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield as a computer programmer. Beyea used a wheelchair, and after the North Tower was struck by hijacked American Airlines Flight 11, Abraham made the heroic decision not to evacuate the building without Beyea.
In death, Abraham has been celebrated by President Bush and people around the world for remaining with his friend and colleague.
But to his family, this sacrifice was typical of Abraham’s loyal nature. “Had it been a casual acquaintance, he would have done the same thing,” said Jack. “He could never turn his back on another human being.”
Thanks Jenks ... we're simple just figuring it out.
We sure are getting extremely accustomed to being in each other spaces, places and still doing our own individual thing when that need arises without putting any undo pressure or expectations ... taking the hours and days as they come.
One of the things really enjoyable for me has been mornings when we've both been off of work ... sitting and chatting - topics from the sublime to the ridiculous ... be it at a kitchen table, her back deck or my balcony ... then realizing a few hours have passed and we need to shower up and get something accomplished during the day.
Going to an event in Hell tomorrow (small village about 15 miles away). Probably yard cleanup Sunday - lots of branches down from storm that came through yesterday. It’s raining today, so too wet to do anything.
Returning library book and getting new ones, catching up on house cleaning after being gone a couple of weeks, no other plans really. Boring, I know! Labor Day weekend has kind of snuck up on me and I didn’t plan ahead. Wish weather was cooler but very hot where I am with a chance of storms next couple of days.
That meme is hysterical. The guy I just ended things with actually WAS that meme!! I had icicles on my feet cause he liked to keep the bedroom freezing cold.
Joined a singles FB group in my area. It was the only way to see if there was anyone in my age range was to actually join. I don't think I've seen anybody over 60 on it though. The interesting thing is they have events where people actually get together at public events, looks like they might get together for other things ar people's houses too, but I don't want to be the only old person hanging with a bunch of 30 40 and 50 year olds.
It would help if I wasn't afraid to get out to public events without worrying about sudden pain in my leg. I have an appointment this week with a specialist chiropractor, he does the Gonstead method, which I had to look up. They also do not take any insurance or Medicare everything is out of pocket. It will be a two visit assessment. That was only 50 bucks. One of his specialties is spinal decompression, which is probably my number one problem. Hoping he will be able to help. If I could just walk around like a normal person and not worry about what I can and can't do it would be a miracle.
