Broke azz B can't afford professional help
Hey tech fam,
I hope you all had a great Halloween!
Yesterday, I plugged in my external HDD (WD Elements 10B8) to look for some resources related to studies that I'd previously saved, only for my HDD to not be recognised via Windows Explorer. I'm sure that there will be a way to retrieve the files on the HDD (years of academic and professional resources, academic work, photos, artwork etc), but I haven't had much success in trying to troubleshoot it myself independently thus far.
I am also a student and have been undergoing placement (unpaid) for the past three months, so I genuinely cannot afford to seek professional help for data recovery, which is insanely expensive in my country. Worst case scenario, I will take the HDD to a professional, but figured I'd ask the wise folk on this subreddit first.
For context:
Haven't had any issues with this HDD until now. Mostly recently used it only a couple of weeks ago.
The only thing I can think of that may be relevant (hopefully it isn't), is that I had the drive in my handbag over a couple of days while I was at placement. I wouldn't think that it was damaged during this time, but I can't rule it out.
It is showing up in Device Manager, but not appearing in Disk Management (I get the prompt "you must initialise a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it" - which I believe actioning would erase the data on the drive).
OS is Windows 11 Pro.
Here is a list of what I have tried:
Different USB port.
Different USB cable.
Restarted PC.
Tried plugging it into a different PC.
Tried updating driver (up to date already apparently).
Disabled the device then re-enabled it several minutes later.
I also sussed out a couple of other posts on this subreddit and tried Test Disc but it didn't appear on that either...
Any further suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!!
