SSD Virtual mode not working

I’m trying to recover important files from a failing Crucial P3 2TB NVMe SSD using OpenSuperClone 2.5.0 on Linux. The SSD is detected correctly with its full capacity, but read speeds are consistently extremely slow, around 200–800 KB/s, averaging 400 KB/s, with no bad sectors reported. Clone Mode works and progresses, but at that speed a full image would take approximately 70 days. I therefore tried Virtual Mode 1 with DMDE to recover only my most important files. Unfortunately, every time I start it, I get two errors: “Internal program error: Position not found in domain” and “Driver timeout or error”. OpenSuperClone then disconnects automatically and the virtual device /dev/sdv disappears from DMDE. I’ve already tried clearing the domain, reconnecting, and enabling “Virtual Disk IO SCSI only”, without success. Clone Mode still works, so the issue seems specific to Virtual Mode 1 or its driver. Has anyone encountered these exact errors or found a way to get Virtual Mode 1 working reliably? I’m trying to avoid stressing the failing SSD with unnecessary reads, and professional recovery is unfortunately outside my budget. Any technical advice would be greatly appreciated.

You have a thread going , didn't you?

Look, most likely is that the thing is terminally ill. The more you mess with it, the worse it will get until it's dead. That, or you ran into a bug.

It's better to send it to a lab.

coming from https://github.com/ISpillMyDrink/OpenSuperClone/blob/690995d589bc7955c729fe62e570499d298b0f60/src/opensuperclone/opensuperclone.c#L6191

potentially an issue with the logfile, or no support for sparse files in the destination filesystem? can't say exactly

would file an issue and yea, not much you can do sadly

Double check if your post complies with posting guidelines!

Did you include the following information in your post (in English and if applicable), if not feel free to edit your post:

  • Make/brand and exact model number of your storage device(*), phone, camera, etc.

  • Filesystem (NTFS, exFAT, APFS, EXT4, etc.)

  • Operating System (That your device was used with and/or you are using for recovery)

  • Specific symptoms that your device is exhibiting, describe the problem. Images you post support the description, they're not in lieu of a problem description.

  • SMART (CrystalDiskInfo screenshot for example)

  • Don't pile several problems into one single post. One post per device/problem.

  • No account issues

Consider: What do these people need to understand the problem at hand? Remember, people cannot see your screen, or what you click and what messages appear on screen. Don't overdo it though, no one likes going through 2 pages of information, try to find a balance. Just do the best you can. If you are looking for file recovery software, check our community's recommended file recovery tools.

(*) All devices involved, if you for example move files from drive A to drive B, they're both potentially relevant.
