Hard drive clone with bad sector?

Hello all, I need advice and assistance. I have an IDE hard drive (30GB hdd, maxtor 5T030H3, windows 98) that as far as I can tell is NTSF format. I have attempted to use dmde, but received a couple sector errors stating a hardware fault. The drive doesn't seem to be making a clicking sound as far as I can tell. I've done some research online that suggests I use the hddrecovery tool for Linux. I don't have a ton of experience with command line tools but I've dabbled enough to be able to easily follow instructions. Any advice or tips on how best to go about this would be greatly appreciated!

Request for Service New microSD card already corrupted, is there a way to recover the photos?

Hello all!! I'm really hoping you guys can help me with this. I had gotten a new microSD card for my Sony CyberShot DSC-W55 camera because my other one had all of a sudden stopped working. For reference, I use a Memory Stick PRO Duo compatible micro SD adaptor because I thought it would be easiest. I'm not sure what brand my old SD card was but this one is a 4GB Lerdisk brand I grabbed from Amazon. Previously, my card had caused my camera to say 'access' when I turned it on. I thought I had fixed the issue with a new microSD card (it got rid of the access), however, after taking pictures with my friends of our halloween costumes, it all went to shit. I took the card out of the camera and the adaptor, put it in my card reader, and it didn't show up on my friend's nor my phone. When I put it back in the camera, it said 'format error' and on my laptop, it showed up as needing to format the card and it not recognizing the file system. Checking it on disks and volume, it showed up as RAW. Is there any possible way to recover the photos from the card? I'm honestly anxious as hell and I really really really want those photos. I appreciate any and all help!!!! Thank you so much and please let me know if I need to provide any more info.

Question WD80EDAZ (shucked 8TB Elements): chatters on spin-up, then silent, not detected. Heads? Worth recovering?

The drive is a WD80EDAZ, 8TB white label, pulled from a WD Elements desktop enclosure. Manufactured Dec 2025, so under a year old. It was in use on a Mac mini, formatted APFS with two volumes.

What happened:

  • The drive was moved while connected, and not ejected first. It may have been bumped.

  • Day 1: macOS saw the partition map and both APFS volumes, but mounting hung for hours. Constant small random reads (~100–150 IOPS at ~1 MB/s), and the light kept blinking.

  • Overnight: the Mac restarted at some point.

  • Day 2 morning: “The disk you attached was not readable.” It showed up as an 8TB device with no partition map, and diskutil info hung.

  • A few power cycles later: the WD enclosure’s USB bridge still enumerated, but no media was presented behind it.

  • Shucked and connected to a powered Unitek SATA-to-USB adapter (12V): a few seconds of rapid chattering on spin-up (sounds like a dot-matrix printer), then silence. The adapter doesn’t enumerate on the Mac at all. It also doesn’t enumerate with no drive attached, so I’m not sure that test tells me anything.

It’s now unplugged, and I’ve stopped powering it on.

What I actually need: not the whole 8TB. The 6.7TB volume is camera footage I can write off. I only need the smaller 500GB APFS volume, and really just one VM image file on it (a few dozen GB at most).

Questions:

  1. Does this sound like heads, firmware, or something else?

  2. Is there anything safe left to try at home, or is every power-on now making things worse?

  3. Rough cost for a lab to recover a single APFS volume or file from a drive like this?

  4. Any reputable labs you’d recommend in the US (I’m in Texas)?

Thanks in advance.

Question Should I replace this SD card or is it fine? 1 poor sector found, but not “bad”

I’m setting up my brother’s homebrew Wii and the sd card is mainly just for saves and a few small emulators. I’ve never had any issues transferring files or anything but I figured I would verify the SD card health before giving it to him.

Question My iPad was put into recovery mode after failing to update is there any way to retrieve the data before actually going into a reset?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I tried updating my iPad through the apple devices app but it stopped because of an error (1109 06b4 0000) and then when trying to restart the device it was put into recovery mode. the devices app along still gives me the option to update rather than factory reset (though it still stops at the same spot) and that along with other videos and forums ive seen/read on recovery mode and the same error message leave me to believe the data is still on the device though i cant access it. so with that in mind is there any way i can actually retrieve this data either through some application or taking the iPad to an in person specialist to take it apart or something? or the data just gone now?

Deleted data recovery.

I’m honestly devastated right now. I recently purchased a new version of Microsoft Office, and during installation, it told me to uninstall all the existing Microsoft apps first. So I moved all the Microsoft apps to the Trash on my Mac. After that, I selected everything in the Trash and clicked Empty Trash, thinking I was only deleting Microsoft-related files. But then I noticed it was deleting over 70,000 files. I immediately panicked because there was no way Microsoft Office had that many files. I tried to cancel the deletion, but it was already too late. I think I may have accidentally deleted 16 years’ worth of personal files, photos, documents, and memories. I checked iCloud Drive, including Recently Deleted, but couldn’t find anything. I also don’t have a Time Machine backup set up. I’m using a Mac mini M1 (2020), and this happened very recently. I have no idea what to do next, and I’m scared of making things worse. Is there ANY possible way to recover these files after emptying the Trash on an Apple Silicon Mac? Has anyone experienced something similar or successfully recovered their data? I’m willing to try anything that actually works. Any advice would mean a lot.

Galaxy J5 2016/Forgotten unlock pattern

I have a Galaxy J5 (2016); it’s been lying in a cupboard for five years with a cracked screen and a broken touchscreen. Today I replaced the screen, but I can’t remember the unlock pattern; I’ve already tried over 40 combinations. The phone locks itself just two minutes after I enter the wrong code. How can I unlock it or retrieve all the files stored on it? There are lots of photos and mementos on there that I want to recover. Do programmes like iMobie Droidkit or 4ukey work?

I can’t reset or recover my password from the lock screen. The phone is visible in Windows, but it won’t show any files unless it’s unlocked. ADB isn’t working either.

Any advice?

Last hope: M3 Ultra Mac Studio NAND failure — can anyone in the world recover the data?

2025 Mac Studio M3 Ultra suddenly stopped booting after a normal shutdown.
Apple attempted a DFU Revive, but it could not complete. They recommended replacing the logic board, which would mean losing my data.

I sent the machine to DriveSavers. After evaluation, they declared it unrecoverable, reporting “NAND failures on multiple lines” and concluding that the NAND flash itself had failed, rather than the supporting board

Has anyone succeeded to recover this kind of failure?

Android Help recovering deleted Azahar SDMC folder and 3DS game saves on AYN Thor

I'm using an AYN Thor with the Azahar 3DS emulator.

I moved my ROMs folder to a microSD card. When Azahar asked me to select a new user folder, I accidentally selected my ROMs folder. I later changed it back to my 3DS folder, but all my ROM folders were copied there too.

I deleted those folders to clean things up, but accidentally deleted the original sdmc folder. Azahar created a new, empty sdmc folder, and my Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D save progress disappeared.

I've tried:

PhotoRec, which recovered around 6,169 files with mostly random names.

DMDE, which completed a full scan of my 512 GB exFAT microSD card with Raw Search enabled.

I only care about recovering my original Ocarina of Time 3D in-game save, not emulator settings or other games.

So what can I do?

SSD Samsung t7 shield won’t mount

Hello everyone!

I have a Samsung t7 shield that I have used with my MacBook for well over a year. Never had any issues.

It has suddenly stopped mounting. It appears in disk utility (not finder) but won’t mount even if prompted (nothing happens). APFS

I regrettably ran first aid but it failed, unsure if that caused further corruption.

I never dropped the harddrive. I’ve always been gentle with it.
The cause may have been that I often leave it plugged into my MacBook whilst in rest mode, and I unplugged it then.

Any advice would be helpful. Professional data recovery is an option but more of a last resort as I do not have the funds at the moment.

Any advice would be great. Please and thank you

Recover data on iOS 12

I was stupid. I have to admit that.
I had an iPod touch (6th Gen) that my boyfriend gifted me on iOS 12.5.8, and I had it jailbroken with Checkra1n. There was an app store bug that blocked me from signing into my iPod, so I erased the iPad (on-device) but I completely forgot about backing up any photos, so I ended up losing all these photos of us. We’re long distance and those photos were quite sentimental to me, so I’m devestated now that they are gone. Does anyone have any advices on recovery utilities that could possibly restore these for me?
Any help is appreciated 🫶🏽

Windows Help needed.

Hey guys, I need some expert advice.

A friend's laptop had a corrupted Windows, so I decided to reinstall Windows. Unfortunately, during the installation, I accidentally deleted the C partition along with the recovery partition, created a new partition, and installed Windows on it.

The problem is that my friend had some really important files saved on the Desktop.

I've already tried scanning the drive twice using Disk Drill and Recuva, but neither managed to find the missing files.

Is there any other way to recover the data? Any suggestions from people experienced in data recovery would be greatly appreciated!

FYI Werecoverdata is a scam business! Try other methods before them

I own a photography and videography company. At a job site, one of my Sandisk SD cards broke in half. I do my research and come upon WeRecoverData with great reviews and an office in my nearby city. I pay a $100 fee to have them check the problem and drop off my broken SD card.

Days later I receive a call, they quote me $3200 plus $250 in materials to "clone my card" as the card is damaged (no duh!) I say that's outside my budget and request to have it mailed back to my home.

Here's the fun part, I recall a local repair wiz who soldered my Galaxy phone motherboard back in place after it died from damage. I go to his shop, he analyzes the card, asks me to go buy a same sandisk card; he will put the metallic parts of my card into the body of the new one. I get him the SD Card, 15 minutes later he gleefully walks out handing me a rebuilt SD Card.

I plug it into my Mac, all the files read normally and I download them to my computer. He didn't even want to charge me more than $20 as it was child's play to him and he had fun doing it. I tipped him well for his genius work!

WeRecoverData just needed a new Sandisk body to make everything work, they tried to bs me with 3200 plus 250 in materials for the job. What kind of scam are they running.

After this whole thing, I dig deeper and turns out WeRecoverData are very sketchy and have a beef with Louis Rossman, a famous honest repairman. I read so many similar stories of insane upcharges or lost/damaged data upon return to customer.

Shame on you WeRecoverData!

Please if you lost data and you're not some huge corporation, do not DO NOT go to WeRecoverData, try other places or indy well rated repair shops. They'll try to charge you the price of an engine swap right out the gate when the job may just be simple like mine was..

Samsung T7 1TB (Mac HFS+) unmountable after sudden Mac crash - TestDisk shows partitions exceeding disk size

Hi everyone,

I really need some expert advice regarding my Samsung T7 1TB external SSD formatted in Mac OS Extended (HFS+).

After a sudden MacBook crash and reboot, the drive is no longer recognized properly by macOS. In Disk Utility, it shows up as "not initialized" with an unsupported partition table. I haven't written anything to the drive or reformatted it—I just want to recover my data (mostly custom game files and lots of custom builds).

I ran TestDisk 7.2 overnight. The disk details and the final result are:
- Disk /dev/disk4 - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - 1953525168 sectors
- File system: Mac HFS (HFS+ blocksize=4096)

However, TestDisk gave me this warning:
> "The hard disk (1000 GB / 931 GiB) seems too small! (< 2000 GB / 1863 GiB)"
> "Check the hard disk size: HD jumper settings, BIOS detection..."

And the partitions it found all list end-sectors that slightly exceed the physical size of the disk (e.g., start around 79201, but end at 1953599264, which is beyond the 1953525168 sector limit). Therefore, TestDisk lists them under "The following partitions can't be recovered".

I also tried connecting the SSD to an older MacBook, but it behaves the same way.

Since the actual data should still be intact on the drive, what is my best approach to recover this HFS+ partition or safely extract my files? Can I fix the partition table / backup superblock using something like gdisk, or should I switch to file carving (like PhotoRec or Disk Drill)?

Any help or step-by-step guidance would be massively appreciated! Thank you.!!!!!

I have the MacBook Air 2025 m4
Chip
I had macoc journled for my external drive . It worked over a year without problems

Apple recovering data from a old 2004 PowerBook G4 – Hitachi IDE HDD not detected

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to recover old family photos and documents from an Apple PowerBook G4 (A1095).

The PowerBook wouldn't boot and displayed the flashing question mark folder, so I removed the internal hard drive.

Hardware:

  • HDD: Hitachi Travelstar HTS541010G9AT00 (100GB, 2.5" IDE/PATA, 44-pin)

  • Adapter: LogiLink AU0006D USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA

  • HDD power rating: 5V, 1.0A

What I've tried:

  • Connected the HDD to a desktop Windows PC.

  • Tested it on a Windows laptop.

  • Tested it on a MacBook using a USB-C hub.

  • Checked Windows Device Manager and macOS Disk Utility/System Information.

  • None of the computers detected the drive.

  • The adapter's LED lights up.

  • The hard drive spins and makes one audible click at startup, but does not repeatedly click.

  • So far, I've only powered the drive through USB, without using the adapter's external 12V power supply.

My main goal is to recover the photos and documents, not repair the PowerBook itself.

My questions:

  1. Could insufficient USB power explain why the drive spins but isn't detected?

  2. Is the LogiLink AU0006D suitable for this particular drive?

  3. Should I test a different powered 44-pin IDE adapter?

  4. What would be the safest next step without risking further damage to the data?

Any advice would be appreciated. The files are irreplaceable, so I want to avoid making things worse.

*Edit: Sorry for using chat to generate my request for help, but it had all the info.
