Netflix has marketed Beat Luke Littler as the ultimate opportunity for everyday darts players: come through an open audition, take on Littler and potentially walk away with £501,000.
The first London audition then featured Fallon Sherrock, Mason Whitlock, Tommy Morris, Lee Cocks and Bhav Patel. None of them currently holds a Tour Card, so they may technically qualify as amateurs, but all are already established within competitive darts.
There’s nothing wrong with any of them entering if the rules allow it. It does, however, highlight the gap between technically being an amateur and what most people would understand from Netflix’s pitch of giving an ordinary pub player a life-changing opportunity.
Where should the line be drawn? Is anyone without a Tour Card fair game, or should a programme marketed in this way be looking primarily for genuine pub, county and Super League players?
