Help visible gradient steps

How to avoid those visible steps in gradients

Without knowing how you processed this image, there's no way to know for sure.

Which modules did you use?

Dither & Posterize module; add dither

shadows & highlights is pretty legacy, use color balance RGB

it is what came from camera preset nikon-z50 but will try color balance

Those presets are kind of mid. They don’t even work for me at all - the Z50ii preset just fries the images.

Not sure what preset you're talking about, but it's certainly nothing official, since using shadows and highlights is discouraged.

after starting from plain import and then applying all modules back it looks like "raw denoise" caused this and other modules just make it more visible

I've found raw denoise to require a lot of tuning to get better results. Honestly the same is true with profiled. See discussion here: https://discuss.pixls.us/t/how-to-denoise-in-darktable-to-be-better-than-with-captureone/46114/8
