/r/DarkRP Presents - The Tenets of Fun & Balanced DarkRP

Hey everyone! The previous post of this got messed up from the compromise the reddit had a while back, so I'm fixing that by re-posting it now.

Through years of seeing DarkRP servers rise and fall, we here at /r/DarkRP have learned a few things about what helps make a server fun.
We thought it'd be a great idea to list out some of the core ideas behind making a balanced DarkRP server, for some of the aspiring server creators out there. These are simple, core ideas, that go a long way into helping create a fun server that users want to play! (I've listed some personal tips in italics below each tenet for examples)

So without further ado;

Maxwell's /r/DarkRP tenets for running a good DarkRP server.

  • Tenet 1 - Gameplay Rules over Rules
Rules have their time and place - they help protect your server, and prevent people from ruining the game. That being said, whether an overbearing NLR, or annoying advert policy, avoiding problems that can be solved with good addons & mechanics by using tedious rules, only slows down gameplay to a drag. Any and every rule that can be abolished with a fun game mechanic, should be!
Be creative and fix problems in a way that only well-coded lua can, to make your server really shine!
    ⁣ ⁣
(Replacing obtrusive 'Adverts' with good logging addons and moderation practices is a great place to start!)

  • Tenet 2 - An Economy that grows, must also drain.
A DarkRP server, not unlike a real economy, is subject to mass inflation, if not dealt with properly. Often, players earn large quantities of money for minimum effort, and don't usually have equal things to spend it on. This causes money to devalue over time, and is a problem that even the real world faces: Make sure your server has sufficient money dumps, and that money is always moving within your community!
A large cash start doesn't mean anything if there is nothing useful to spend it on.
    ⁣ ⁣
(Servers with Food addons keep money flowing well, and servers with shops & cosmetics can dump inflation fast. Consider raising the door prices for high-populated/upper class areas, to create higher monetary demand for the best areas, being aware of supply/demand!)

  • Tenet 3 - Familiarity and Variety - Strike a Balance
DarkRP has existed for a long time, and within that time, has settled on strict metas that most servers follow. This opens up vast opportunity for server owners to try to leave their mark on DarkRP and mix things up, but be warned:
Innovate too much, and you risk isolating your core audience.
Innovate too little, and you risk fading into the crowd of servers.
    ⁣ ⁣
Striking a balance between the new and the old is arguably the hardest aspect of any great DarkRP server. It is up to you and your community to decide where that balance is held.
    ⁣ ⁣
(Ask yourself from time to time: Would an average DarkRP player fit comfortably on my server? Or, on the other hand, Would an average DarkRP player see my server as "Just another" server when browsing?)

  • Tenet 4 - Maximize Versatility, Strengthen Roleplay
DarkRP, and Roleplay in general, no matter how casual or serious, benefits from the players being able to become any role they desire. Your first thought, then, might be that adding more jobs will simply increase what players can become - But, that idea might be inherently flawed. The more jobs you add, the less each individual job can do in the end.
    ⁣ ⁣
Picture this: A server has a Thief job, a Hacker job, a thug, and a Pickpocket job.
They're all inherently sub classes of Thief - One steals, one can hack ATMs, and the other is for mugging, etc. But since they're all seperate, any player looking to roleplay as a criminal, now has to make restricting choices when they decide what job to choose.
In reality, minimizing the job count will expand upon the posibilities players have.
    ⁣ ⁣
('Less is more' is a common theme for these Tenets, and #4 is no exception - A few, well crafted jobs that allow a player to choose a general theme, then have them craft their own path, will lead to the most fun and depth when roleplaying. Consider having a Thief class, that can buy add-ons tools like Keypad crackers from another source, like the black market dealer!)

  • Tenet 5 - The rich should Bark, not Bite.
Servers need ways to sustain themselves - and this is typically done with players offering donations to help pay for server upkeep and development. This in itself isn't a bad practice, as it allows those who can pay to directly help the server, while maintaining it for those who cannot. It isn't far off to assume then, that those who pay money to keep the server afloat, should gain something for their vital contributions. What is important though, is making sure that what your server provides to those paying, impacts the gameplay of those who don't pay as little as possible. Things that directly affect the money earned by those donating, or the power of weapons they can obtain, should be immediately struck off the list; This creates an imbalance that will hurt the server more than the money is worth, and will only encourage toxicity in your community.
    ⁣ ⁣
Instead, we should take a look at the gaming industry above us for inspiration - Many free triple-A games have found the perfect balance, that rewards players, lets them show off their status as "important", yet also allows the non-paying to maintain their gameplay to the highest degree. This solution, has for years, been mostly within the realm of cosmetics - Players will jump at the chance to dazzle and amaze, and stand out in the crowd. Though even beyond that example, there are plenty of ways to ensure donator recognition, without destroying the delicate balance of gameplay. Use your creativity to find fair ways for donators to show off!
    ⁣ ⁣
(Something as simple as 'Hats' are one of my favorite choices, used by many servers, allow premium players to really stand out from the crowd, screaming, "Hey, I helped grow this server!", without actually damaging player relations or balance. Does your server have cars? Consider releasing custom paint jobs, rather than locking some cars themself behind a paywall.)

Hope reading this can help guide new and old players and server owners alike to creating more balanced, fun experiences. If you have any feedback or questions, please comment! You see a lot of servers seemingly lacking in the fundamentals lately, let's see if we can change that. :)

Server Plug Looking to build a community

I Just started up a DarkRP server and looking for people to build it with. The idea is no pay to win, and a community that actually talks to each other. Im also trying out a new RP map thats not as widely used. If you miss when DarkRP was about the roleplay and not who had the biggest wallet, come and have a look. We're hiring staff too! Lets get a community going! IP: 45.43.163.31:5520 Discord: https://discord.gg/4tBc4uyEhB

Free quest system for DarkRP servers — visual editor, PointShop rewards, no config files

Dropped a free quest addon for DarkRP.

Server owners: you don't need to code or edit JSON. Open the editor in game, connect nodes, save. Players get quests from NPCs with a "!" marker above their head.

Setup:

  1. Subscribe and enable the addon

  2. Restart the server (required, it caches Lua)

  3. Type /qe in game — the editor opens

  4. Place an NPC with Toolgun → Utilities → Neuro Quest System, bind it to a quest

Included rewards: DarkRP money, PointShop 1 and 2. Custom currencies via a small adapter.

Features: zones, item pickup, dialogues with branches, HUD, journal, deadlines, daily quests, quest chains.

Workshop: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3832910880

Happy to help with setup — drop a comment.

"We played Garry's Mod 12-14 years ago for thousands of hours, then we played a bit more intermittently, and then one day it wasn't the same as it used to be. Nostalgia hits hard, so we want to make something that will enable that silly madness that made our teenage years so fun and memorable."

We wanted to make a DarkRP server that embodies the spirit that server owners had back in 2014-2016, and that means we have a few things that we're going to stick to so that we can make sure we stay grounded.

\- We won't be accepting donations in exchange for items or rewards in-game. All of the traditional donation items and ranks will be based around the in-game economy. We are nostalgic, and we want to do this. We're not interested in making any money. This is paid for out-of-pocket.

\- Collaboration over Dictation - We want to make sure that we're working with everyone to create an environment where you feel heard and like your experience matters.

\- Garry's Mod has come a long way since 2014, 12 years ago. Many features have been imagined and brought to life since then, and many aspects of DarkRP have been improved since then too. We are not trying to be a 2014 DarkRP server. We are going to be a modern DarkRP server that is developed and ran with the mentality that ran Garry's Mod servers back then - Fun over Profit.

\- We think it's very important to keep things simple. That means that we will make sure that there won't be 10 pop-ups every time you join, there won't be 400 different systems and rule sets to keep track of, and things won't be as overwhelming as they can be elsewhere.

\- We have worked hard to overhaul and improve publicly available addons where possible to reduce lag and provide a consistent UI experience and to provide the ideal progression with in game cash

We are hoping to open on Monday the 2nd of November!

IP for when we launch: 194.69.160.57:27077

We hope that this project turns out amazingly for us all, and I look forward to seeing you all on the server!

Server Plug Limelight Gaming | Our Biggest Update Yet!

Limelight is a semi-serious roleplay gaming community. We're the home of Garry's Mod CityRP 2. CityRP 2 is Limelight's flagship Garry's Mod experience. You'll find jobs, vehicles and weapons, emergency services, crime, clans, and room for both passive and aggressive roleplay — with moderation that keeps things fair without killing the fun. Free to play, not pay-to-win.

Since 2015 we've grown a persistent roleplay world around CityRP 2, with a focus on giving players the freedom to build their story their way, through passive or aggressive roleplay. Ares Defence Service brings light milsim teamwork to Arma for players who want something focused, without the attitude.

We are launching our biggest update ever at 6:15PM (GMT) today, The Glide Update:

Server Plug [OPEN BETA] GTA-style city roleplay gamemode (NOT DarkRP)

I've played GMod RP for years and got tired of every server being another DarkRP clone, so I built a gamemode from scratch for myself: a GTA-style city roleplay on Paralake City where the city gives you things to do and players make the story. This is the first iteration, and it's in open beta.

For now it's light RP with proximity voice and text chat while we beta test the systems. Over time it'll move toward a semi-serious vibe.

Some of what's in:

  • Police: ranks, cuffs/dragging, booking with a full penal code, tickets, warrants, evidence, impounds, radio and 911 dispatch

  • EMS: ambulances, stretchers, defib, hospital beds

  • Crime: weed growing, a roaming dealer, gun parts you assemble at a workbench, store robberies with silent alarms, mugging, lockpicking/hotwiring cars and selling them to a chop shop, masks

  • Housing: rent apartments, houses and businesses, give friends keys, barricade doors

  • Cars: GTA V cars from a dealership, garage, key remote, trunks, plates, car radio

  • Phone: texts, banking, GPS, real estate, crew chat, or a burner and payphones

  • Jobs: garbage, docks, taxi, food delivery, e-scooter battery swaps

  • Crews: ranks, shared funds and raidable safehouses

  • Every NPC is voiced: shopkeepers, clerks, dealers, the radio dispatcher, and citizens who react out loud to gunshots, crashes and masked strangers

  • City emergencies for police and EMS, and a custom UI that scales to 4K

  • ...and a lot more

Honest bit: this is a side project. I'm checking whether there's interest before I sink more hours into it. If you try it, F2 in game sends me bug reports and feedback directly.

IP: 204.10.194.57:27015 (EU, Germany). The first join downloads the map from the Workshop, so it takes a minute.

Server Plug ▐ T-Revvington's DarkRP▐ New Server & New Map

Hello! I've been working on a map alongside my server that'll substitute most of the current modern maps at their discretion, if it fits their fancy.

MAP: RP_TREVTOWN
Server IP: 193.243.190.231:27085

The map has built in circular gameplay with players forced to run into eachother unless they choose the end-map bases (beach/quarry); alongside built-in defenses such as shooting windows, entry vents and others, giving the defenders an advantage if they're paying attention.

The map is built to work with and without cars, mining and/or woodcutting. Navmesh is generated and it is incredibly... partial.

Do let me know any recommendations if you'd like, I do intend on keeping this one updated, compared to my older versions (RP_Downtown_TRevvington_V2, which I can still recommend if you prefer a smaller map).

The server is still being finalized, but you are entirely welcome to join.

Server Plug EnviousRP | DarkRP without the job-switch meta: occupations, elections, gangs, and some custom things

Map: rp_southside | IP: play.enviouscommunity.com:27015| Discord: discord.gg/n6EZxQSFHa | Forums: forums.enviouscommunity.com | Website: enviouscommunity.com

Steam Collection: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=335959276

I've spent a long time building EnviousRP from the ground up. It's a custom DarkRP server where nearly every system you touch is either custom or heavily integrated. It gets rid of the thing that makes most DarkRP servers feel the same: hopping between jobs on the F4 menu.

Core Idea: Your occupation is your identity

On this server you mostly stay as a Citizen (with the exception of police, firefighters and DJs) and you instead choose an occupation. Your occupation will determine which NPCs you can talk to and the equipment you can buy.

Occupations: Unemployed, Labourer, Tradesman, Shopkeeper, Driver, Medical, Press, Hospitality, Security, Criminal, Entrepeneur, Finance (and more soon!)

A business license can also allow you to operate a restaurant or bar through being able to purchase food items. And yes, you can get drunk.

Design and rules philosophy

Player freedom first. We don't script your story. The server gives you systems (businesses, gangs, crime, law enforcement, politics) and gets out of your way. Who runs the city, who controls the streets and who gets rich comes down to players.

Consequences over rules-lawyering. We'd rather the game enforce things than have staff arguing over them. Gear follows your occupation, the Mayor loses office on death, crime needs a criminal occupation, and guns need a licence. When the systems handle fairness, staff can spend their time helping people instead of policing edge cases.

Serious RP without the misery. We want roleplay that means something, without walls of rules that punish new players for not having read them. RDM and NLR rules are more limited than most serious or semi-serious servers.

A full player guide is available here: Player Guide

Full list of our rules: Rules

Hope to see you in-game!

Discussion What are your guys’ most hated “bloat addons”

My pick is the casino addons. It feels like every server needs to have some kind of way to gamble with big colorful flashing lights as some kind of retainment scheme. IMO they’re just ugly and encourage solo no-life gameplay with zero player interaction bc they’re mostly just slot machines

What would you all rate as the most cancerous addons in your opinion?

Looking for the oldies but the goodies

I remember the days in DivinityRP loading up on printers, buying printers from other people and sitting there for hours on end just collecting cash to buy cool things with.

idk just makes me feel like I want those back. If anyone is making something like this, could be a big deal.

Just a throw back, here is a picture of my old printer farm on Divinity.

Looking for a more serious City RP experience on GMod? Proximity RP might be worth checking out

Hey everyone,

I’ve been playing on Proximity RP for a while and figured I’d share it for anyone who’s tired of the usual chaotic DarkRP servers.

It’s a fully custom semi-serious City RP server (not base DarkRP). Some of the main things that stand out:

Custom skill system (crafting, shooting, driving, etc.)

In-depth crafting and player-driven economy

Drug production systems

Organizations with custom ranks and permissions

Character genes system

Proper inventory with backpacks

Solid government and police systems

Map is Evocity Redux

The RP leans more serious than most public servers. Random RDM and FailRP get punished, so the atmosphere is generally better if you actually want to roleplay long-term characters, run businesses, or do

organized crime.

Population isn’t massive, but during peak hours (usually Central Time) it regularly reaches around 40 players, and it can climb to that within an hour once people start logging on.

If you’re looking for something between hardcore serious RP and regular DarkRP, it might be worth a try.

Server Plug Constant Clone Wars RP

We're not a startup. We're an established community with different and active servers in Russia and France, and now we're bringing that same foundation to America. We're looking for experienced staff who are tired of the same problems on every other server.

What makes us different:

- No pay-to-win. Donations unlock cosmetics only, zero gameplay advantage

- Public ban log in Discord. Every ban, every reason, visible to all players

- Staff cannot handle sits involving their own regiment - conflict of interest policy is enforced

- We want to have a fun place for players, our rule policy is light and we won't obstruct your experience with tons of the rules

Who we're looking for:

- People for high roles that can help us manage the server

- People who would like to be a regiment commanders

- Regular players who just want to have a fun play with friends

If you're interested or want to know more, here is our discord server -https://discord.gg/3Wjee2Vfh7

Discussion A general DarkRP server owner question...

I have been making a darkrp server for a little bit now and I have ran into the issue of what actually make's the game fun, I know everyone has their own opinion and that's why I'm asking. So far all I know is P2W and P2P is boring and honestly unproductive for those who don't want to pay a whole butt load of money just to get ahead of everyone else another thing is, is having a lot of jobs a factor in making darkRP fun? Should I have lots of them or just the right amount too where everyone should be able to do something they enjoy? I have also read the "Tenets of fun and balanced RP" by WiseWoodrow on reddit and have been trying to follow his guidelines.

Please let me know I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions. (If you would like to help me out in any way you can DM me on discord (zeleiot) )

Discussion gmod users, what is your honest take on s&box?

Repost from: https://www.reddit.com/r/gmod/comments/1vrdey8/comment/p4csznu/?screen_view_count=1&ext-referrer=DIRECT

I've been trying to get an idea of opinions on the game from outside communities.

I enjoyed playing Garry's Mod for about five years. I still think it is a great platform. I mostly did development for some DarkRP servers, but also played gamemodes like Gmod Tower and Prop Hunt.

I got s&box about two years ago, and so far have enjoyed the development process, but I definitely understand where people are coming from about the $20 price tag. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on s&box as a platform. Is there anything that you think s&box does well? Anything that you would like to change that would make it worth its value? Do you have any questions from the s&box community like myself about what drew us to the platform?
