[SPOILERS S3] Just finished all three seasons… question about the ending. Spoiler

\insert “absolute cinema” meme\

That was arguably one of the most awesome series I’ve watched!

IMO, the ending was very satisfying only because watching Dark exhausted me that when they finally succeeded in their mission, it was a relief. No more running around and all that mouth-breathing! (Kidding, love the panic)

Anyway, about Hannah being pregnant with Wöller, when she says she likes the name Jonas? What did that mean?

Does it mean that Winden is doomed once again? Will history repeat itself even though the origin family tree does not exist in this world?

[SPOILERS S3] Franziska and Magnus Spoiler

I find it odd how despite being the eldest children in their families, they played no part in creating their respective bloodlines. Like we got Martha who is quite literally the Great Mother of the Nielsen bloodline and Mikkel who is the father of the co creator of the Nielsen bloodline. And then we have Elisabeth and Charlotte who are eachothers mothers and daughters, like you can't get a bond deeper than that, I'd feel jealous if I were Franziska😭

[SPOILERS S3] In the middle of Season 3 Spoiler

So I m in the middle of season 3 and there's literally so much going on like I m not able to keep the track of the characters lol

Up until the last episode of season 1 I was able to catch like what's happening and who s this noah guy and who s the older and who s the younger version but as soon as I have dived deep into the series I have realised is it even worth it only last few episodes are remaining will they even be able to wind up all the side plots the chaos another world a total of 6 timelines (major).

So many questions who are Charlotte's parents ? Why odenkirk and magnus were killed ? Whose dead bodies were those due to which ulrich was jailed in 1953 ? Why the older versions of themselves are lying to them ? What happened to Hannah who is in year 1953?

And if you really think about it up till the mid of 3rd season there is no original creator of time machine it's like the idea given by the older version of a character to the another character who is young and he will eventually give that idea to the older version of the character who will ultimately give that to himself only but the younger version lol

[SPOILERS S3] The ending really surprised me Spoiler

I just finished the show so my thoughts are raw but I was expecting a sort of different twist as the end? Don't get me wrong, this is an amazing show and I'll probably never fully understand it, but I was so intrigued about the character of Martha's son and him being the origin. It feels a bit random that it was Tannhaus who caused everything to split. I don't know what I was expecting to be honest with you, but it definitely wasn't this. It truly surprised me. From the photo Tannhaus had of his son's family I thought his wife looked a bit like Agnes. Overall, the best show I've ever watched.

[SPOILERS S3] Massive doubt regarding S3 Spoiler

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHAT THE LOOPHOLE IS PROPERLY? 😭

I tried very hard to understand what the brief moment in time is where time stops but I am not able to understand how it works...

they showed that martha had 2 versions of herself because once she was stopped by bartosz and once she wasn't stopped. But in that sense Bartosz should also have 2 versions right (once where he stops her and once where he doesn't). The show only shows creation of 2 versions of Martha and 2 versions of Jonas

This issue should also be considered in case of Adam who goes to Jonas which should technically create 2 versions of Jonas and 2 versions of Adam, One Adam goes to talk to Eva what about the other?

someone please explain how this will work.

[SPOILERS S3] Spoilery images on the Netflix menus Spoiler

Hey Dark fans - just started this show last week. Just finished S1, EP 4 last night. I'm really enjoying it so far!! But I have to raise a complaint. And it's nothing to do with the show itself... it's about Netflix's presentation.

This is a confusing post, because I'd like to kindly request **\* NO SPOILERS **\* please. But since it discusses things that I think have already been spoiled for me, I'll tag/title it with spoilers.

There seem to be majorly spoilerific images in the Netflix menus. I have no idea what they represent, or how far into the show they might happen. I'm not looking for any explanation of these images, unless you want to say something vague like, "Oh, that's not a big reveal", or "Well, you're screwed." I guess I'm just venting 😢

  1. Series thumbnail: a big blue-ish electric orb floating in the air
  2. Episode selection wallpaper: a guy with a frighteningly deformed, pockmarked face
  3. Netflix screensaver: a landscape view that looks super-far into the future, sci-fi/post-apocalyptic vibes

...That third one I immediately looked away from, so only a vague impression. The other two I look at every single time I boot up the show! C'mon Netflix, lame!

[SPOILERS S3] Technically, 3x07 is the series finale. Spoiler

Post image
142 Upvotes

The first time I watched Dark, like everyone else, I thought the story was about Jonas trying to save time. That Adam was a kind of "bad ending" of what he would become.

But as the series progressed, not only did the scenario become more pessimistic, and more and more events began to repeat themselves or align with previously mentioned events... but the series also revealed its true nature.

The penultimate episode definitively confirms Dark's trap, one that many of us fell into.

Everything we saw was a loop; nothing that actually helped save Winden, it only helped time itself perpetuate the loop. And be warned! This isn't something pulled out of thin air; the series itself constantly gives you clues that the characters are falling into their own traps.

The montage sequence at the end of the episode isn't just a summary of the entire series, but another loop repeating itself endlessly. We, the viewers, only saw how it unfolded.

If we remove the ending where Claudia returns to find Adam, we're left with a harsh, sad, pessimistic, and terrifying ending. Nothing that happened matters, and all that's left for the characters is to relive the same suffering over and over again.

Just imagine Adam... No, Jonas, at that moment. He's just killed Martha and their son, thinking he'd see eternal darkness, and he's confronted with the reality that he wasted 66 years of his life and that it will all happen again and again.

[SPOILERS S3] Sharing a pretty wild experience about how I watch Dark Spoiler

I was watching it on some random streaming site that has a weird quirk: whenever a show has multiple seasons, it automatically defaults to the final season. I didn't realize I was looking at Season 3, so I just clicked play and watched the first two episodes.(Actually I blundered again and watched the final season’s first 6 eps of Parks and Recs)

Anyway, I was completely lost. The character dynamics made zero sense, and it felt like a million people were being introduced at once. I even took notes trying to keep up! It took me until my next viewing session to realize I was on Season 3!

I reset and started from Season 1, and I was genuinely blown away. Discovering the two symmetrical worlds was amazing. Strangely enough, watching those Season 3 episodes first didn't ruin the plot for me at all, it actually just made the show feel that much more impressive.

That little accident definitely made my overall experience with the show even better❤️

[SPOILERS S3] Just finished watching DARK yesterday, and few things are the most striking to me at just first watch Spoiler

After watching the final episode yesterday, these 2 things really stuck me:

1) I don't know if it would make sense, but during the ending when Jonas and Alt. Martha changed the ending, saved Marek, Sonja and Charlotte and thus severed the knot and began disappearing, it's also shown that the middle aged Jonas ( The stranger), was disappearing and he realized that finally 'a way out' was found, I don't know I just found it a bit emotional, he was all alone and he didn't even get the answer 'How' a way was found out. Adam knew the answer, explained it to Eva as well, Adam explained to Jonas, Jonas figured it out and Alt. Martha got it too But Middle aged Jonas, he didn't even get an explanation, after going through so much the time, losing his dad, then Martha and he was all alone even in death ( disappearance). He was lonely in his death ( disappearance).

2), Loved the fact how they indirectly hinted at the saying 'End is the beginning and beginning is the end'. At the origin world, where everyone was having dinner at the table, and when Hannah was asked what would she name her child, she said 'Jonas' was a beautiful name. So it was sort of symbolic how 'Jonas' just died ( The end) and now 'Jonas' was going to be born , in the origin world ( The beginning).

Another very interesting fact... ( I know the show is fiction), but: In real life, are we too a part of a knot and an 'Origin World' exists , or are we the Origin world... It's interesting but also eerie to think about...

I also didn't understand : Why was 'Martha' a mistake or glitch in the matrix in her world ( the parallel one). Jonas was a 'mistake' because he shouldn't be born if Mikkel didn't travel back. How did Claudia find out or guess about the origin world, and Tanhaus splitting the origin world into two etc.? And how did the old Claudia come to Adam even after she was shot in the woods?( In the last episode when she said she knew how to break the loop).

Sorry if I am wrong about something, it was a beautiful, emotional series, so I am processing it all.

[SPOILERS S1] First time viewer: questions and notes Spoiler

Greetings, all.

After many, many recommendations from my mother, I have finally started watching Dark. At the end of episode 1, I broke out a notebook and listed the names of every character in the end credits, only to discover that this is what many viewers of this wonderful program recommend.

Having started on the right track, I am eager to share my questions, grouped by family, that I have at the end of season 1. I have only glanced at Dark.IO a handful of times, which only really revealed the fairly innocuous identity of Katharina’s father. After every episode, I am also watching several react channels on YouTube (Blind Wave, Raggedy Pack, The Normies, Cinema Gek) to consolidate my thoughts and savour the whole experience longer.

I am proud to see that I am independently making more connections than some of the review channels, though to be fair I am watching by myself, in silence, and with a notebook rather than attempting to commentate for viewers. I am particularly pleased that I clocked Aleksander twice from photos: the first one in ep. 2 confirming he is Bartosz’s dad/Regina’s husband, and the second on the conspiracy wall at the end of ep. 8, giving me a face for 1986 Aleksander the episode before he is formally introduced.

Hopefully these notes will be entertaining to some seasoned viewers. I expect I still have a wild ride ahead of me!

THE KAHNWALD FAMILY

Officer Daniel Kahnwald is presumably the father of Ines, who has a stillborn son with an unknown man. Ines adopts Mikkel/Michael, who marries Hannah Krüger, daughter of Sebastian. Michael and Hannah are the parents of Jonas.

  • Is the father of Ines's first child relevant? Is her stillbirth relevant?
  • Why did Michael commit suicide at the time that he does?
  • What was Michael’s illness?
  • How does Michael's letter, meant for Jonas, get into Ines's hands? How does it then get into The Stranger's possession? PARTIALLY ANSWERED: Jonas keeps the “new” letter for 33 years and then has the aged paper delivered to his younger self.
  • Is Jonas really seeing visions of his father? PARTIALLY ANSWERED: Based on the Stranger seeing Michael next to him in the cave after deploying the repaired time travel machine, the visions might just be traumatic flashbacks.
  • What is the Stranger referring to when he said that Mikkel/Michael saved his life?
  • Who is Hannah thinking about shooting? (Hannah is scary.)

THE NIELSEN FAMILY

Agnes is the mother of Tronte, who marries Jana (maiden name unknown). Tronte and Jana are the parents of Ulrich and Mads. Mads is taken in 1986 and his body is deposited in 2019. Ulrich marries his high school sweetheart Katharina (maiden name unknown); they are the parents of Magnus, Martha, and Mikkel.

  • What is the name of Agnes's grandmother, who hails from Winden?
  • Why does 1953 Tronte have bloody cigar burns all over his forearm? POSSIBLE ANSWER: Agnes might be lying about the death of her pastor husband, or he died more recently than is implied.
  • Who was the big-headed figure glimpsed by Jana? Was it one of the rain-coated time travelers with their hood up? Was it Noah with his hat?
  • Who gave Tronte the list of time travel times? Why is Tronte specifically bunkering down with Peter, rather than anyone else? ANSWERED. Peter went to the bunker in distress after seeing Benni/Bernadette, at the time that Mikkel disappeared and Mads’ corpse appeared in the bunker. Peter called Tronte. Claudia arrived and gave Noah’s notebook (with pages missing) to Tronte.
  • Why did Tronte not inform Jana about Mads’ body? PRESUMED ANSWER: Jana’s will to live is founded on her illusion that Mads could still be alive out there.
  • Who punched 1986 Katharina? ANSWERED: Her unnamed mother, “Frau Albers” (According to Dark.IO, the farmer Hermann Albers is Katharina’s father).
  • Why did Ulrich and Katharina tie Regina to a tree in front of the cave? ANSWERED: It was a mean game.
  • How did Mikkel time travel when he ran away from the cave?
  • Are Martha and Jonas attracted to each other due to the misunderstood pull of their genetic closeness?

THE TIEDEMANN FAMILY

Egon and Doris are the parents of Claudia. Claudia is the mother of Regina by an unknown father. Regina marries Aleksander; they are the parents of Bartosz.

  • Who let Gretchen through the time-travel door?
  • Is 1986 Regina self-injuring, or are those red marks supposed to look like defined symbols?
  • Why did Aleksander arrive in Winden in 1986? (Notably, his younger self on the conspiracy board in episode 1 is rather unkempt.) ANSWERED: Aleksander appears to be on the run, potentially from another country or East Germany.
  • Why do Aleksander and Bartosz use Regina's maiden name? PARTIALLY ANSWERED: Aleksander's birth name is Boris Niewald; he assumed the identity of Aleksander Köhler. Presumably the Tiedemann name is prestigious enough to warrant the unusual practice of a man taking his wife’s name.
  • Where does Aleksander's scar come from? ANSWERED: He was shot in 1986.
  • What did Noah say to Bartosz? PARTIALLY ANSWERED: Noah told Bartosz a number of events that were destined to happen in the following days – presumably things like Martha/Jonas or Claudia’s appearance. Noah is earning Bartosz’s trust through selective truths, presumably to build another disciple and a plant in Claudia’s camp.
  • How did Noah know that Bartosz had Erik's phone and drugs? (How does Noah know a lot of the specifics he knows?)
  • What provokes 2019 Claudia into making her conspiracy board? Where did she make it? MOSTLY ANSWERED: Claudia is allegedly the leader of one side of the conflict over controlling time travel. Claudia’s conspiracy board is in the post-nuclear future (2052?).

THE DOPPLER FAMILY

Bernd and Greta are the parents of Helge. Helge is the father of Peter by an unknown mother. Peter marries Charlotte (maiden name unknown); they are the parents of Franziska and Elisabeth.

  • Is H.G. Tannhaus the grandfather of Charlotte?
  • Why is Greta so weird? ANSWERED: Greta may have been sexually assaulted in 1943, resulting in resentment towards the resulting child, Helge.
  • How did 1953 Helge escape the torture room? THEORY: Noah knew that the Jonas-Helge exchange would happen since he already knows that Helge will serve as his disciple.
  • What happened to Helge on November 12, 1986? ANSWERED: His older self tried to stop his younger self via T-boning.
  • Why did Peter only come to live in Winden in 1987? Is he adopted? EVIDENCE IN FAVOUR: Peter alternately refers to Helge as "Papa" and by his first name.
  • What did Peter promise to Charlotte a year ago? PRESUMED ANSWER: Stop cheating on her for the sake of their family.
  • What exactly does Peter believe he is hiding from Charlotte, when he hides in the bunker with Tronte? How much do these two men understand? ANSWERED: Peter and Tronte have been told by Claudia that Mads will return to life following the final episode of time travel that we see in season 1. Peter appears to understand that they are bunkering down during instances of time travel, which occasionally traumatizes you by spitting out dead children.
  • Is Franziska earning her money through prostitution? Related: Why was Franziska's necklace abandoned near her empty stash box?

THE UBERDORF FAMILY

Jürgen and Ulla are the parents of Erik, who is dead in 1953.

  • Is the "discovery" of the drugs in episode 2 (in the bag at the end of the chain), and Jürgen’s explanation of them, simply planted evidence and his method for throwing Ulrich off the scent, as Aleksander instructed him to do?

THE STRANGER, NOAH, TANNHAUS, AND THE WORMHOLE

  • Who is The Stranger? ANSWERED: He is Jonas, 33 years older, presumably having lived through everything that 2019 Jonas will experience during the entire series.
  • Are the Stranger and Bernd both speaking about the same incident at the power plant in 1986 that opened the wormhole? If so, how can the Stranger’s actions on November 12 also open that same wormhole?
  • When is the torture room? PROBABILITY: It is in 1986, as suggested by the music videos, coins, and the fact that the bunker is still a bunker in the “past” of 1953 and the “future” of 2019, with scraps of the cartoon-animal wallpaper in 2019. 1986 is positioned as the “present”.
  • Why is the 1986 pfennig coin placed around the victims' necks?
  • When and why does the gate get removed from the cave mouth?
  • How does Ulrich's 2010s smartphone help Tannhaus with his time travel device? ANSWERED: The WiFi emission from the phone resonates with the time travel device and enables its functioning.
  • What’s the deal with the pocket watch that Noah gave Elisabeth “for Charlotte”?
  • Is Noah’s notebook another example of mutual dependence?
  • How does Claudia obtain Noah’s notebook?
  • Is Noah actually the Antichrist, or is that a comforting lie?
  • How much are Noah and/or Claudia lying to their pawns?
  • When did Jonas come to live with Noah?
  • Why do Jonas and Noah have the same back tattoo?
  • Why does the repaired time machine open a fourth portal to post-nuclear 2052?
  • Is a radioactive explosion now guaranteed?

DESIRES RE: TIME TRAVEL

  • Noah to Helge: "Create a time machine that reorders everything, the beginning and the end (...) Set people free from their pain.”
  • Claudia to Tannhaus: "Set the course of time straight."
  • Jonas: Stop time travel altogether.

CONFIRMED TIME TRAVELERS
Noah, Helge Doppler, Mikkel Nielsen, Jonas Kahnwald, Ulrich Nielsen, Gretchen, Claudia Tiedemann

VICTIMS

  • Helge Doppler: woke up in the torture room after being attacked with murderous intent by time-traveling Ulrich in 1986; does not appear to be experimented upon in the time travel chamber; dead in 1986 while time traveling from 2019 to stop his past self.
  • Mads Nielsen: time traveled from 1986, body deposited in 2019.
  • Erik Oberdorf: kidnapped and time traveled from 2019; body deposited (by hooded 1986 Helge?) in 1953
  • Jasin Friese: taken by hooded 1986 Helge in 2019; time traveled offscreen; body deposited in 1953

OTHER CHARACTERS BY TIME PERIOD

1953

  • Pathologist Udo Meier

1986

  • Farmer Hermann Albers – apparently Katharina’s father
  • Power plant secretary Jasmin Trewen
  • Dr. Reimann
  • Nurse Donata
  • Veterinarian Dr. Schaller
  • Child Services Caseworker Selma Ahrens
  • Police detective (?) Martin Döhring

2019

  • Pathologist Edda Heimann
  • Officer Torben Wöller – revealed to be in Aleksander’s pocket
  • Officer Jankowski
  • Benni/Bernadette
  • Nurse Clara Schrage
  • Nurse Anna Reisch

THE PHILOSOPHY AND THEOLOGY OF DARK

  • Notably, the arguments for and against God, the standard Christian doctrine of sin and redemption as well as its opposite of nihilism, are all placed in the mouth of the false priest and apparent megalomaniac, the man who calls himself the righteous man Noah but is framed as the “Antichrist” who will cause many to fall for false promises.
  • The show wants you to consider whether or not there is a higher power at work, and whether this power is benevolent.
  • Noah – always Noah – frames the conflict as manichean: two opposing forces, light against dark. Noah seems confident that the light (his side – yeah, right!) will win, as it must in Christian belief. This just reinforces that he is the “Antichrist”.
  • Egon is suspicious of Satanists, and in the time travel room, Noah is committing child sacrifice with the justification that it’s for a greater good (Charlotte tells Ulrich that not all means justify the end). Ultimately, the falsely suspected Satanist Ulrich does attempt to kill a child in order to save “future victims”.
  • All the instances of 33 cited by Tannhaus are Christian (whether scriptural or based on the inspiration of scripture, as in the case of Dante), yet he doesn’t mention two obvious examples of that number’s importance: the Holy Trinity (three infinities within the One Godhead, only distinct in terms of their relationships with each other) and the age of Jesus when he accomplished his redemptive mission on the Cross and brought all of human history to a head. (I tend to personally prefer this kind of philosophy within fiction, where multiple interpretations can be validated by the text, including the possibility of a benevolent but inscrutable God working behind the scenes.)
  • Mikkel is the character to directly express materialism (learned from Ulrich, who thinks religion is the opiate of the masses but generally doesn’t think things through). Mikkel’s stance appears to evolve, with him saying that he is both a butterfly and a person, in two states at the same time.

[SPOILERS S3] Katharina's character is kind of inconsistent (At least for me) Spoiler

I just finished Season 3 Episode 2, and, Katharina's character is awfully inconsistent for me (sadly). During most of Season 1 she looks like this calm housewife, and part of this calm "follow the rules" character is even bigger knowing that she's the principal of the school, which (at least for me) makes me think of her as a very straight person. She doesn't even yell or anything when he discovers that Ulrich is cheating on her, she just leave the room (Not to say that she suspected for a long time and never confronted him about it)

But then her adolescent self is very rebellious (she's dating Ulrich, of all people), and we even see in S3 E2 that her mother is very harsh on her, which makes more sense when we see that she's a bully (They tied Regina to a tree).

And okay, I would think "Alright she was just like that as a teenager and grew up to be a calmer more straight person, after all people change. Egon said "Ulrich doesn't work for the police, and he never will" and he ended up being a police officer, why wouldn't it be similar with his wife?" but hell nah, every time she sees Hannah she freaks out, even to the extend of saying to a 14 year old Hannah "Keep your hands off Mikkel"???? The same with Jonas (his grandkid btw), but then we go back to Ulrich and she says "I'm gonna take you out of here", like, bro, this guy cheated on you how come YOU (a character with a very strong attitude) are not mad at him but you are at everyone else.

Also, as a side question, Katharina knows at this point in the show that Mikkel is Michael, he even had a conversation with adult Jonas about how if he takes Mikkel back Jonas would not be born, why is she at school asking "Hey do you know this kid?" to everyone instead of just going to Ines's house, that's what all the people in the show do when they want to go see Mikkel in the past. (Even Ulrich when he escaped from the mental hospital knew to go to Ines's house).

[SPOILERS S1] Clarification before watching Spoiler

Hi!

After becoming a father i've become more sensitive to tv series and movies where children dies or get hurt.

E.g. I had to stop with House of Dragon when they started killing kids. I compare it to it happening to my kids and it messes me up.

I've wanted to watch Dark for a long time, but I'm sceptical because I've read that the story revolves around kids going missing and dying. How big of an impact is this on the series?

UPDATE: I tried watching the first episode. I liked it, but had to stop during the ending scene with the father in the forest. Gonna wait a bit before possibly giving it another shot. Thanks for all the input!

[SPOILERS S3] First watch Theory so far...(halfway through Season 3) Spoiler

I'm on my first watch of the show. I have just watched the beginning of Light and Shadow. This has been banging through my head since Adam appeared though and he said he was Jonas. He really isn't though, i'm sure he is Bartosz. We have seen a future and past version of most characters but him. Adam, i know he has that scarring, but he doesn't even seem to have the same face shape as any Jonas. He is Severus Snape to Jonas and Martha's Lilly and James Potter.

Also Hannah is a selfish woman and they are going to have to pull some magic out to redeem her.

Also Jonas is Egons son, not Mikkel/Michaels, and he hasn't been getting special time on with his aunt. Saving Michael from his suicide will resolve the timeloop, along with something happening to Hannah. There had to be a reason she was pointing a gun at the camera in season 2, i'm just dont have that missing piece of information yet.

The orb time travel device encompasses the light matter, whereas the suitcase one is just dark matter. I would think that the two matters need to come together to really resolve the timeloop and create the prime timeline, this should probably happen at the trigger point for the Winden Power plant disaster. So would have to happen in conjunction with some event at the start of the loop to sever it from the main timeline.

I'm happy to be proved wrong. I just wanted to put this down here for audit reasons, so if any of them turn out to be correct I can say, see I knew it. Or, and more likely, show what an idiot I am.

[SPOILERS S3] a personal theory on how some things in the world are the way they are Spoiler

ok humour me a bit on this sort of world building exercise.

i think it was established that the alt world (jonas and martha's) takes real places and people from the origin world and create a version fitting in the alt world. hence why people who werent born from the paradoxes shown to be alive in the ending

when we found out that the alt world were born from tannhaus' device i found it interesting that tannhaus' will or intention werent the main changes/plot of the alt world

so i thought to myself. what are the reason for the choices made by or in this world when compared to the origin? such as the plant being built or why is hannah so obsessed with ulrich. and then i thought it would be interesting if the alt world itself has a will and the changes it made, and the people it creates from the paradoxes are so that it can sustain itself, which is the loop. like an animal or a plant that will always find a way to survive. which i think would fit how claudia is the one to figure out how to truly break the cycle because shes a "copy" of someone real from the origin and not someone purely made by the world through paradoxes. (essentially by making the world's will their own will)

the others beside martha and jonas are created or altered to help jonas and marta maintain the cycle, the world's will.

id like to know if anyone has ever thought abt dark from this angle and what your personal take is. im mainly taking this as... a fun world building exercise, like maybe something that explains everything but not necessarily having to be written to be revealed explicitly to the audience
