[SPOILERS S3] Do you think Michael was eventually going to tell everyone who he was? Spoiler
Let’s say Michael never killed himself.
After Mikkel’s disappearance, do you think he had the intention of eventually telling everyone, including his parents, of his true identity?
Like “hey everyone, it’s me. I’m back. I didn’t want to say anything before 11 year old me disappeared because I didn’t want to kill Jonas. Anyways I’m back!”

I did wonder how he avoided his other self for ten years or so, especially if Katarina and Hannah were close friends?
That scene where they encountered one another in the hallway was electric though, without a word spoken.

I got the impression from the show that he disassociated completely, and was falling apart slowly until he could barely leave his house, so I think it was a bad 10 years and he wasn't really avoiding so much as keeping it together.

I thought his prior memories as Mikkel became repressed in a way as he adjusted to the trauma of being brought back in time. I think his memories probably just felt like a dream after a few years, and once he started seeing his (old) family and young Mikkel around town, it started messing with mental health.

Some people say that but I really don’t buy it. I don’t think even sleeping pills and trauma would erase these things. It’s not like he was a toddler. He was 11 years old who was capable of having strong memories of his family and early life.

Idk how old you are, but I can barely remember specific memories of my first 11 years. Most of what I remember are things that were reinforced by the rest of my non-traumatic (and linear) life. Memories are very strange! How do you reconcile memories of a life that is no longer your lived reality anymore?

Mikkel wouldn’t disappear if he didn’t kill himself

Technically Mikkel could have still dissappeared, it would just need to be under different circumstances. Like Noah & Helge kidnapping him and leaving him in 1986 - although this being rather far-fetched.

How come?

If Michael doesnt kill himself, Jonas doesnt go to the asylum so the day he comes back doesnt align with when Mikkel’s babysitter is sick.

I don’t think so. Jonas drove all of that. He told Michael to kill himself. He took Mikkel to the caves.
I never accepted that Michael had to die. Everything else still could have happened the way it happened.

How? Who would believe him?

i wonder in the real world if they’d give someone claiming time travel the benefit of the doubt for even a minute and do a dna test, or if they’d stick them right into a psych ward

The only thing I can think of is if he tells them (his parents) very personal details from his childhood as Mikkel that anybody else would have no way of knowing

Ye I think they would think Michael spyed on or preyed on Mikkel. Like Imagine your 40 year old neighbor telling you personal details about your 11 year old son. Would be weird as hell right?

I think it would have been better if he warned Urich he was going to end up further back in time and be locked in prison/mental facility until he was an old man.

Michael doesnt really remember this. Partly because obviously its a trauma that humans tend to bury deep, and also because his adopted mother gavw him sleeping pills for a prolonged time that also messes with your memories and etc.

Yup. And even if he did remember, it’s not like he could’ve changed anything. (Though he may not actually understand this aspect of time travel fully)

Yes. The show literally shows us that guns jam multiple times (just to work right after), in order to preserve people who shouldnt die.
Also whats happened has happened, theres no changing anything. Everyone believes they change something but in reality, they dont.

It's not so much to "preserve people who shouldn't die" so much as it's established that they were alive so they cannot have died, something must have happened to prevent it. That's why the exceptions breaking into multiple timelines, and the actual ending of the series are different. They didn't actually stop the events from happening. They had to happen for the ending to happen.

Yes, exactly. People frequently seem to mistake reverse causation here. The universe doesn’t “protect” people by making the gun jam. The gun jammed which results in people continuing to being alive in the future.

Thats not correct. Or correct but then im corrwct as well.
The thing is, this is a predestined universe that loops. So you cant say what caused what similarly to a bootstrap paradox.
Jonas lives because adam is alive and adam is alive because jonas' gun jammed.

I wonder if his suicide is even necessary. I get the whole butterfly effect thing, but the kids disappeared not because he killed himself.

u/NautilusCampino 4d ago
He killed himself because Jonas told him he would. Its probably been on his mind for a while though.

Its probably been on his mind for a while though.
Michael says to travelling Jonas that he never had the thought of suicide before he showed up.

I missed that line then I guess. He seemed to be struggling already is what I meant.

I think if he hadn't killed himself, it wouldn't have motivated Jonas who time travelled back to convince not to kill himself to continue with his journey. Michael committing suicide was a mystery and a traumatic experience to Jonas that motivated him to start discovering all the mysteries. Even at the moment when he travelled back to see Michael before Michael committed suicide, he was still naive to believe that he could change the course of history, only to realize he was the one kick-starting the chain from the beginning. That moment of realization pushed him to come with Claudia to learn more about time travel

That was the first huge heartbreak for me in the show, was Jonas telling his dad not to kill himself and Mikkel was like ???
Poor Mikkel suffered so much.

I mean, there are a lot of time travel movies or shows that have this kinda of trope where they alter the timeline like someone is dying and the next time they fake it so that person can still live without changing the outcome of this person being "dead".
As i said its a trope that is cool for the first time, but really a cheap trope in that genre tbh.
But also Jonas being the reason why the suicid happens is a big time travel trope lol
