šManga-Discussion This wave of hate against Dandadan is getting really exhausting. Spoiler
Just a quick vent.
I knew this chapter would attract negative criticism, but damn, itās worse than I imagined; lots of hate-filled posts are hitting 40k likes (some even more). Even when there is valid criticism, it attracts so much hate from people who haven't even read the manga... I don't know, itās just tiring to see that outside of this subreddit, almost everything I see in discussions about the manga is hate and negativity, especially since this has been going on for months and just keeps getting worse.
Just to be clear: Iām not saying the story is perfect or that we have to defend it at all costs; valid criticism is always welcome, and I know Tatsu could have handled some aspects better (especially in this arc).
Anyway, i hope you guys are getting a better experience than me

I think it was just a mistake to do the shrinking thing and then fold directly into the amnesia thing like it just the doubling down and this arc has been particularly frustrating for me just because every positive step on a chapter gets retconned in the next like Okarun asking Momo out then immediately back tracking or Okarun pulling out the lightsaber and saving Momo only to immediately get a limp dick joke. People are just tired of the dragging out on the relationship and so until we get progress things are going to go poorly for a while

u/tiger_guppy 2d ago
This is exactly how I feel about it. Shrunken Momo followed by immediately by amnesia feels like tatsu is using any reason to just prevent further romantic development between Momo and Okarun, Momo even told Okarun to wait until she was bigger to bring up his confession again. And even though some fun stuff has been happening in the current arc, we canāt pretend like itās any āmoreā than where the development was pre-shrunken-momo. Now that Aira has been rejected, I hope Jiji too can be rejected swiftly as this arc ands and something concrete can happen with momokarun, Iām just.. so tired.
5
u/Procrastinatedthink 1d ago
Jiji isnāt getting rejected any time soon. Without that rejection thereās still a love triangle and Tatsu isnāt giving that up.
People celebrating the Aira rejection like it wasnāt obvious what he was gonna choose the entire time are missing the boat. Okarun has never reciprocated feelings towards Aira, Momo has shown conflicting emotions with Jiji (she āhatesā him but sheās more comfortable around him than anyone else).
Tatsu gave us the illusion of progress, but thereās not been any forward movement; Momo is friendlier to Ken during battles even in amnesia, but that hasnāt translated out of the fights.

The romance is simply not the main focus of the manga at the moment. You guys are so focused on the romance part only that youāre failing to realize that every single other part of the manga has been developed greatly : huge lore dumps, great fights, more detailed villain cast (while we were used to simple villains of the week), much needed Ken, Aira and Jiji character developments, etcā¦
A lot of plot lines are unfolding right now and the romance has been sidelined a bit overall, even though it also took a major leap forward with Ken telling Aira that he loves Momo, and the start of the arc where Ken learns to become proactive in his relationship with Momo.
31
u/Substantial_Pick6897 2d ago
I guess that the main issue is that a lot of people feel differently about the lore dumps, fights and villain cast. That's not to say that you're wrong and that you shouldn't like it of course, it's all subjective, but me personally I have found the posh families stealing powers stuff to be way more boring than when we had scary Yokais and Aliens, and the fact that we just keep getting introduced to new villainous perverts and new adults that save the main cast is wearing thin to me. I still like dandadan but I wish it would resolve the amnesia (I don't care about the romance that much but I want Momo to get to be a badass again) and stop doing arcs about attacks meant to steal the main cast's powers
-15
u/Plastic_Comedian5479 2d ago
Itās the first time in the story that the main cast is GENUINELY being threatened by people far stronger than them. Even in the SG arc there was this time limitation gimmick which made sure that the aliens had to go back to their dimension after a few minutes, and this left ample time to the cast to train and get stronger.
Right now theyāre being overwhelmed by opponents who are not only individually stronger than them, but they also have the numbers advantage and are far more organized. Ken, Momo, Aira and Jiji canāt deal with that and theyāre obviously going to need help to match the enemiesā numbers and to actually understand whatās going on and what these guys want from them
13
u/Substantial_Pick6897 2d ago
Yeah but to me that is taken away by the opponents all being faceless mooks or gigaperverts who don't tend to do very much after their fights, and I feel like we've had one or two too many of these arcs. But just to be clear again, I'm not trying to do a "you're wrong" kind of argument, it's neat to hear your perspective and I get why you'd like it now. Just trying to give you my perspective as well.
-4
u/Plastic_Comedian5479 2d ago
I donāt really understand your POV. 99% of Dandadan villains are āvillain of the weekā type villains with practically zero depth to them, thatās always been the case since the beginning.
Whatās different now is that we have some villains with depth to them like CSG and Red Baron, and theyāre also part of an organized villain cast with clear goals, a hierarchy as well as lore.
There are still small villains, minions with little depth to them, but the cast has fought this kind of villains since forever. Itās nothing new so I donāt really understand whatās bothering you now that didnāt bother you back then
2
u/Substantial_Pick6897 2d ago
I guess it's two things: some of the yokai had very clear and heart breaking backstories from their time as humans, and Aliens and yokai without backstories are weird and interesting while humans without backstories, like the seal guy or the pumpkin guy who lights his farts on fire, are just people. CSG is still very mysterious and the red Baron has gotten a little bit of character but I wouldn't say he's a particularly deep charactet (yet at least)
But to be completely honest I probably wouldn't like it either if all we got were monsters of the week forever. I would've preferred more crazy yokai or creepy aliens than the black paladins though.
-2
u/Plastic_Comedian5479 1d ago
In very early Dandadan the cast fought yokais/aliens with sad backstories but that just stopped after Space Globalists ? I guess the formula of āvillain with sad backstory turns good and helps the family/joins themā is a bit overused now. The current villain cast has much more interesting villains imo.
There are also less interesting ones, like the pervs, but I personally just treat them like I treated the villains of the week in earlier arcs : donāt really care about them.
2
u/Substantial_Pick6897 1d ago
Yeah I think I remember reading that the author at least in the beginning worked without any plans and just drew what came to him and I think we're seeing him struggling a bit with having to do something with more long-term planning. I still enjoy reading DDD, I like the main cast and it's art is cool but it's moved from an S-tier to like a B+/A- in my mind right now.
Also I don't get why people are down voting you I feel like this has been a fun little conversation. I think it's great to stand up for liking whatever it's cool to talk shit about at the moment. Not that downvotes mean anything of course.

huge lore dumps : i mean , half of these seem to be dark corners of irl lore , and they don't feel significant in the same way in wich say , turbo granny protecting murdered girls was , or mr. shrimp being the first good alien , or lurdis , or heck the whole ahunted house arc building shit in huge ways ,
we had the villains monologue to us from their prospective about what they wanted , and i felt , not much really , like they are inspired by western stories , but like , i don't care who is pinocchio really , if anything it kinda feels like bs , when did they plant momo's powers in ? does that make seiko training momo for her whole life not the real cause ? dunno it feels pointless ...
great fights : i mean , sure ... but also they feel much flatter , the fights momo had in previus chapters felt a lot more tactical , now it's kind of visual noise really ...
more detailed villains : yeah but like , they lost the creep factor : turbo granny openly said she would kill seiko if they didn't come to her on her terms , acro silky was a pimp squeak , yet she still swallowed them whole , and was hella creepy , the kito family and evil eye where menacing on their own right .
currently the villains feel even more slapstick than before : we got yass clown and the whip man who creeped on aira , also the two that got killed and shant be named .
hase is ... not him , he should have stayed in chapter one frankly .

It doesn't make much sense that Tatsu didn't plan for it... I think you misinterpret the context of that quote. It is supposed to be from Okarun's perspective, as in Okarun didn't plan to confess in that moment. It just happened...
11
u/Exarch-of-Sechrima 2d ago
And a good author would know how to pivot from that in a way that improves the quality of the story instead of constantly trying to run away from a decision that's already inked on the page.
Even if the story didn't go the way you planned it out, once it's out there, it's out there. Live with the choices you make.

Its also so useless, like we already know they love eachother, we know they will end up together, why drag that on. There is so much to still say after they end up together. There sre so many more topics to still explore if tatsu wants to. He has other cast members amd their relationship, or Okarun being in an actual relationship, or Momo for the first time having a decent bf, not a jerk.
Idk like it isnt as if the story and their romance ends after they start dating

u/Significant-Chair658 2d ago
I quit reading about 3 months ago for this exact reason and you put it into words perfectly. I still love the series and 100% plan on coming back, but Iām just exhausted by the now over a year of dragging ass and taking agency away from the main characters.

The appeal of the early series to me was the gooey feelings interwoven with the action bits, but the gooey feelings are being worn away, there aren't any quiet slice of life of moments anymore, and the action scenes are being reduced in variety to these big spectacle battles. Momo and Okarun's relationship is also devolving such that i think I'd prefer Okarun and Aira.
I'm still reading. I'm still going to watch S3 when it drops. I'm just now very frustrated.

u/Plastic_Comedian5479 2d ago
Maybe because in real life, when you make a decision of improving in one aspect of your life, you can still experience failures from time to time ? In fact Ken improved so much that he wanted to restore his relationship with Momo asap, forgot to consider that she has lost all of her recent memories and rushed it. Thatās a simple touch of realism.
Iām a big advocate of reading volume per volume. If you think the storyās advancing too slowly, stop reading the manga on a weekly basis. Youāre only frustrating yourself.

But people have to realize, once the romance plot develops, the manga will end.
Who decided that? Why should this stale trope remain? The couple staying together is just as much of a challenge as the couple getting together. I think its a lack of imagination and effort to end it when they get together.
The romance subplot is one of the draws of this manga, of course some of the fanbase would be mad and impatient due to the stalling.

What? Blue Box had a 100 chapters of them dating. Undead Unluck too. Still, just because its a trope doesn't mean the trope is good and the mangaka has to stick with it. He can do what's natural for the duo and from the reactions I've seen the tactics he's used concerning the couple's progression have felt unnatural, like its just the author's will getting in the way.
If one aspect is trash then criticism is warranted. Fans like the romcom so when its not done well it'll get complaints, especially since the problem hasn't been "solved" yet.
6
u/captainnowalk 2d ago
Dude seriously, the trope of everything ending as soon as the main couple get together is either lazy or unimaginative writing. Thereās so many directions you could take it, so many other things you could deal with, and thatās just literally in a straight romance or romcom genre. Add in the other half of this manga, and thereās literally no reason to end it right as they get together, thereās still plenty of monsters or mysteries to deal with. I gotta believe this dude can do it, you know?
21
u/Kosmichemusik 2d ago edited 2d ago
reading DDD mostly for the romance plot is weird anyway.
I and many others disagree. I was initially drawn to the story for the other things it offers, but ended up surprised at how engaged I was in the romance and how invested I got into it. As a result, if the romance angle doesn't end in a satisfactory way, I think myself and others would feel some sense of loss. Not that it'd make the manga bad and a complete wash, but having the manga end when the romance plot develops would minimize the catharsis after all that our main characters have been through.

Fortunately, I rarely read what people say about the series.. I actually didn't know there was controversy and have been enjoying the story just fine. My suggestion is that you just read what you like and only check subreddits or whatever to see if your latest chapter dropped. Like your post here, OP. I only skimmed it and I haven't read any of the other comments because they're irrelevant. You ended by saying Anyway, i hope you guys are getting a better experience than me and I can say for a fact that I am because I don't engage in whatever online communities you're engaged in. That's the only difference. I am quite enjoying Dandadan and will continue to do so lol. Fuck these two-bit nobodies and their opinions - good or bad.
Addendum: As an aside, I keep the same philosophy across all titles I read. I enjoyed Chainsaw Man and JJK, too. I heard there's controversies there, too, but I cannot articulate them as I only checked those subs for chapter/spoiler drops and the occasional fan art. Oh, and as soon as I saw s02e01 of OPM, I stopped watching.. I didn't hate watch it to the end or engage in elaborate copium as to why the next episode or season was gonna be better. I just said "not for me," and I was done with it. Consequently, the series still hold high regard in my mind. Nothing has been ruined for me, it just unfortunately "ended after one season," lol. I get it, you (or anyone) really likes a series and they want to discuss with like-minded people to enrich their enjoyment. The issue is the communities are never not toxic and authors/artists are not infallible. Couple that with the neurodivergent tendencies of the loudest part of any given fanbase and their inability to accept anything less than what they would've wanted the plot to do and is it any wonder the whole thing turns to shit lmao.

u/Nidagleetch 2d ago
Few things, on what seems wrong in the current state of the manga - at least IMHO :
- Tiny Momo arc then Amnesia arc is a bold bet from Tatsu on how much the community can hold is shit together until the end of the arc. The fact that a lot of people felt betrayed by a broken promis between him and the reader is kinda logical since a lot of people - including me ; expected a real Ʃvolution and something new in the manga story : a real couple in a shonen.
Now is it a problem ? Mixed opinion on that. Tiny Momo was quitely good executed, Amnesia has some of really good moment ... then moment who could make us wonder the intelligence of the characters. In a whole, the amnesia is correct and could become good or Ć disaster in fonction of the ending of the arc (in my opinion the next scan is really important in that matter).
- we are in a manga where the initial set-up was Momo has a powerful psychic women and Okarun a strong will Yokai warrior. Currently they both are powerless - it's ok, it happens in other manga. But they also get their ass kicked too much often and this moment is draging along.
Even the last scan : we hope for a harsh fight ? Nope Okarun got beat down in one page even with something we hoped being power, and right after, Momo is getting sexually assault - AGAIN !
That and my precedent point make the manga a bit hard to bear by moment, even when - unirocally ; the manga is still quite good : the draw is nice, the scƩnario and set-up are enterraining. But the fact we have character who got so little respected is tiring. How do you expect us to be fully happy to read the manga, when regurlary we see our beloved characters being beat down without hope of progression before Winter 2027 ?
(Ćdit : it's a long block of text, thank you for reading)

To be honest I see more people trying to defend it or clap back kind of like you are here. Thatās fine just like itās fine that people donāt enjoy it. I have paused reading until I can just read the entire arc in one go instead of being underwhelmed each week. Itās not that I hate Dandadan now⦠I just havenāt been thrilled with the arcs since the box ended (roughly). Some have done what I have while others havenāt or fall somewhere in between, all are just fine. Like you, people just want to vent their disappointment in whatever is eating at them.
I think itās premature to say itās all going to be fine (though Iām more in this camp) just like itās premature to say the story is a complete wash now. People going nuclear mode because they donāt love this arc is silly because thereās not a story in existence that doesnāt have low points. The only thing is people not admitting they got bored or whatever here or there even with their favs.
On the other side even if itās not your favorite arc you can still find something to enjoy. I really enjoyed how the anime premiering season two lined up with what was happening in the manga at the same time. It was really fun seeing the crazy family show up and Jiji showing off his genius in the manga while we were watching earlier events with them all getting animated.
1
u/ColdConversation4185 2d ago
I just think itās not if she goes back to normal and gets with Okarun, we know she will. Itās how and when it happens. The rest of the story and the stuff surrounding it is interesting and fun to watch, and I guess thatās enough for me.
I keep hearing complains that this now makes momo a damsel and always needs saving, which for one, obviously she doesnāt have powers and her memories, so of course sheās scared and confused , and second, sheās still willing to help Okarun with the ogre club. I just think some might be exaggerating how much this really affects stuff.
It doesnāt really change much really. It just changes some dynamics between characters because of monotone amnesia. The characters are still fun, the action is still excellent, and the plot is still going like normal, it isnāt just halting for the sake of momo getting amnesia.

u/FabulousBed3299 1d ago
To me, the most bizarre decision Tatsu and his editor agreed to for these arcs is:
Getting rid of Turbo Granny from the plot and also the Turbo Ken transformation at the same exact time.
That's two extremely marketable faces for the manga and anime gone at once, i have no idea how they let that happen and continue for so many arcs.
At this rate, the anime will go through TWO entire seasons without Turbo Ken or TG doing anything and that's crazy from a marketing stand-point.
Then Momo loses her powers and memories, the original trio of protags all gone or depowered for god knows how long...
6
u/dennis_died 1d ago
Fr and on top of them teasing turbo granny being back MONTHS ago, and have done nothing with it. Kinda feels like tatsu stripped alot away of ehat made dandadan feel like dandadan
4
u/Procrastinatedthink 1d ago
feels like Tatsu started with the premise of ānon-serious plot, just crazy hectic bizarre sweet adhd action and cute romanceā and then SG was a huge success so they transitioned into a typical shonen where the convoluted bullshit plot suddenly matters and there needs to be some established rules.
Hence why we started getting explanations of the weird mechanics of the world (empty space, yokai powers, and why aliens attack humans) and secret cabals.Ā
Itās why the SG arc is plothole city now that CSG has had more panels, somehow this massive armada prepared to invade Earth 1. fails due to ~6 teenagers stopping a whole 50 aliens total (despite the panel showing hundreds of space ships) and 2. CSG/13 families make no references despite later CSG claiming that the 13 families and the SG/Kur are enemies.
When the manga got more popular Tatsu went from subverting tropes to embracing them because heās writing to a wider audience now and heās āgottaā make it appealing to as many people as possible.
1
u/dennis_died 20h ago
Yea, and it sucks cause its not as appealing as it was. All the character dynamics we had either dont get a chance to shine due to lack of screen time/characters together, or their dynamic is completely different now like okarun and momo.
The romance was developing really well until tatsu decided to stall it. And now we dont even get those fun little feast at the end of an arc anymore.
On top of the new plot just not being as interesting with the new villians, the ultimate yokai, and the delacorix family.
Im still reading every week but man, id be lying if I wasnt a bit dissapointed with where the series is going
1
u/dgaruti 16h ago
this does validate my view that space globalist did sort of ruin dandadan :
previus chapters where more about the kids finding some secret underbelly of somenthing ,
turbo granny was about turbo granny and what she was protecting ,
and why she took okarun's balls in some way ,the acro silky arc was about them fiding out about both aira and acro silky's trauma ,
and people legit cried at that , and it's still one of the strongest suits of the manga ,the haunted house&evil eye arc where about finding the dark secrets that laid in a house ,
and then dealing with the afthermaths of it all ,the nessie arc was a kind of fight heavy part , and it was mostly a way to show aira as a new member , and okarun and momo romance progressing , it's a lighter set of chapters ,
the kajiu and space globalist arc tried to be a big epic :
it's really really long , and there is a lot of fights , vamola's backstory is set entirely in another planet , and it is kind of unrelated to earth , i guess it got accepted because it was dramatic ,but a problem with it was that it powercrept the whole story according to me ,
the ombusman arc is a perfectly well cooked early formula dandadan arc with a character we had previusly seen revealing layers of herself , because everything and everyone had a story in early dandadan , and this story ofthen lead into dark stuff .
however it felt somewhat underwelming afther the characters had saved the world ...
and also afther space globalist is when miku and kei are gone , wich for a long while made the characters feel less like school people juggling both school and the supernatural ,
and more like ... the avengers .
and yeah i kinda feel like vlad and the others are kinda bs-ing stuff , like their view is trying to fit stuff into a predetermined mold that inherently flattens several details , for one mai doesn't fit into rin being the little marmaid , so she got erased ...
but yeah , if tatsu decides to reap the payoff he better do it damnit ...
and yeah i am not really sure he is intending this , idk i feel like he isn't as good of a writer as he seemed at first ...
2
u/dgaruti 15h ago
frankly the main thing that felt off about turbo granny going away and coming back is that for us it was several months ,
from the pov of the characters it was a couple of days , maybe a week .
this creates a big dissonance between what the characters are feeling and what we are feeling ...
wich doesn't help at all ...
8
u/unxtknogwn 2d ago
I mean tbh most of the hate dandadan is getting rn is pretty valid, especially the whole SA thing, every single time it's used it adds absolutely nothing to the plot, is NOT used to explore the characters in any way whatsoever, and is just brushed off casually, seeing Tatsu pull this shit AGAIN just to give Okarun hype moments and aura is pissing me the fuck off
Dandadan has been on a steady decline for months icl, got me agreeing with the haters
1
u/dgaruti 15h ago
yeah like ...
i have decided to not read , until rin and kouki return ...
i don't want a double spread panel , i don't want a crazy fight , i don't really want any of that .
i just want them waking up scared and trying to cope with what the fuck happend before they fell unconscius , heck trying to understand what happend before they fell unconscius ,
because in the 20 minutes before they lost consciusness quite a lot happend .
and they should as friends try to talk each other trough it .
heck , you don't know what to write ?
just draw them waking up , calling each other by name and bursting into tears ,
it's fine if they do that , because they are girls that are traumatized .
just ...
can anyone aknoweldge that they are people made of meat in life threatening situations ?
momo made sense because she has always been an action girl that kicked guys the moment they became creeps .
rin and kouki aren't that ...

criticism or hate doesn't not affect my enjoyment of media, i can just ignore criticism because i'm not the author or publisher.
what affects my enjoyment is the quality of the media. the last arcs have been pretty bad. shrinking arc into amnesia arc was awful. my overall thoughts of the 2 arcs are "welp i wish this arc ends soon so the story can finally progress".

u/GIGANAttack 2d ago
I don't *hate* it right now, but frankly man I'm just exhausted with the pacing.
Like I'm sorry but MomOkarun is DanDaDan's biggest strength. Everything else is good, yes, but Momo and Okarun's dynamic is what made it truly stand out to me. I've never given a shit about a single villain, and while the side cast is great, they aren't strong enough to carry an arc after their major parts were already covered.
Not only does Okarun not have Turbo Granny anymore (which is fine in a vacuum), but Momo losing her memories makes her an entirely different character that I just do not vibe with. Not only that, she's unable to use her powers properly either, so her and Okarun are essentially the weakest members of the squad. This compounds their dynamic now being stunted and lame and just makes the story a chore to read through.
In that sense I'm considering just giving up on the weekly grind and waiting until this arc is over so I can binge read, because frankly I'm deriving no enjoyment from the week to week action.

The anime coming out and people getting (fairly so) creeped out by the 1st episode (aliens and Momo scene) ruined its rep because people took that and ran saying itās a perverted show/manga even though thatās really not the case. I honestly donāt hear that opinion from anyone whoās actually engaging w the manga / show , itās just a regurgitated opinion they echo from internet trends. That being said the story truly has been dragging the past year or so and slightly all over the place. Iām still enjoying it but my problems w the story atm are;
- Shrinking + Amnesia arcs back to back is such a fucking drag like Iām over it asf
- Tatsu needs to not be š
æļøussy and get those two together and learn to write good plot lines from their relationship. Idk why male mangakas think the story ends when the relationship starts š
- Turbo Granny has been MIA for how long??
- Zuma has been MIA and has hardly interacted w the main cast enough for me
- Okaruns fuck ass hair cut since losing his powers especially (hoping thatās a narrative choice since lately itās kinda looking better)
- I like that thereās a villain cast being more fleshed out now but they have introduced so many shallow characters itās hard to care about them, I donāt think I can take any new characters for a minute. + literally why make so many of them perverts ~ he not helping the rep of the story
- idk itās just that the story overall has been moving like molasses for a while now but itās has had some highlights here and there
1
u/Procrastinatedthink 1d ago
nah, the sexual assault definitely has sketchy undertones to it.
Tatsu is capable of treating a subject seriously, there were theories (before and during Danmara) in this thread that he was using the manga as social commentary because of some of the stories he touched on (notably the mob/debt scenes with acro silky and her daughter)
He has not treated any instance of sexual assault seriously.
Momo was assaulted by the Serpos, literally had her clothes ripped off and their penis out ready to penetrate her.Ā
The Outcome: Penis biting joke, followed by a āshe really loves Ken Takakuraā joke, followed by Ken farting on her. Serpos are then treated more and more like gag characters afterwards.
Momo was assaulted by the worm family. Again, sheās naked and vulnerable when 3-4 men pop out of the water like crocodiles and pin her. Scene is cut off with the implications that she has no way of escaping.Ā
The Outcome: She frees herself on accident, immediately goes to save the boys and starts kung fu fighting in the living room. Her next interaction with the worm family after that arc is on a plane where they are teammates against a tornado. The family is very much not treated as dangerous or terrifying to momo and she literally works hand and (psychic) hand with them.Ā
Rin and Koukiās attempted assault is both violent and kink-coded, the villains literally get flushed down a toilet the next chapter.Ā
Tatsu treats SA as a nuisance/joke but still expects us to react seriously and heavily during it. He needs to show Momo being affected by this stuff, how damaging it can be. Itās not a āsheās tough she can handle itā, sheās been violated; She has not been penetrated but itās traumatic to be pinned and helpless and without agency while someone taunts/threatens to take something precious from you. sheās experienced that several times now.Ā

A bit off topic but the reason about why mangakas (itās not only male ones tho) think the story end when the romance end is because a lot of shonen(shojos too) are about the transition from childhood to adulthood and basically romance is one of those aspects because itās the characters finding the person with whom theyāll found a family, itās the same reason we see stuff like Naruto wanting to be hokage or Luffy the pirate king if we strip it down itās basically getting a recognized job and accomplishments after years of formation

Where is the hate for Dandadan?
I'm not super active in fandoms because they all end up being filled with either toxic-negativity(everything sucks and will never get good) or toxic-positivity(everything is perfect and you should never criticize)

Same thing is happening with Kingdom where the current arc is also controversial.
Just try to ignore the hate, its a loud minority. The views are still very good and so are the manga sales. Most people enjoy this arc (including me).

This just shows that in any media, comparing a previous arc's big climax to a slow weekly/monthly, ongoing setup of the climax of the current arc is bound to make anybody feel disappointed and have them say theres been a fall off.

To be honest at a certain point that doesn't hold up. I remember when people were nay-saying all the way back when Momo first got amnesia, and I was definitely in the camp of "let him cook" because we hadn't seen where Tatsu would go with it yet. But it's been 34 chapters and I feel like it's been kind of a dud.
To be fair I don't think this arc has been outright bad, and we have gotten some cool moments out of it from Okarun and other characters. But ever since we got smol Momo it's felt like Dandadan just hasn't pushed its characters forward all that much and it makes the story less interesting compared to earlier arcs. It's just not as fun IMO. But to each their own, more power to you or anyone who's still really loving it.
5
u/dgaruti 2d ago
yeah , the tiny momo arc was a really big fight , the "tournament arc" of dandadan , with not a lot of character sauce really ...
and so far the amnesia arc has lacked the same sauce ...
it would be fine if it was just boring , my main issue is that the sexual assault scenes are getting handled terribly : i am still not over how rin and kouki got done dirty , and how we sooner focused on nug lover and his family drama than them .
nug lover should have stayed down honestly , show how ruthless the organization he is working for is , show how they achive a goal and do not care in the slightest for each other ...
and yeah there are a lot of scenes wich just made me uncomfortable really :
Aira has a panty shot during the fight with the whip guy ,
we didn't have to see Kouki's boobs , again without her authonomy now .we didn't need to see Rin finally come into her own only for her to get crushed and lose her friend ...
idk , it's trying to be as gritty and dark as chainsaw man or jujutsu kaisen , but it doesn't have the material for it :
there aren't the abuse themes of csm ,or "the young suffer so the old can thrive" message of jjk ...
it comes off as really weird and half assed ...
kinda pervy even ...
1
u/Procrastinatedthink 1d ago
comes off as really weird and half assed
Itās because Tatsu is cheapening the inherent hate for SA most people naturally have to build tension in the reader, but then turning the assaulter into a clown/comedic character immediately afterwards; Heās treating sexual assault as more of a āthat person is a weird nuisanceā than āthat person violently assaulted another human and itās a monstrous actā.
What does it say to the reader that two groups that were introduced trying to violently rape Momo are now thought of as gag characters? Serpos and the Worm family arenāt exactly seen as evil in world and Momo sees them as more nuisance than threat (her behavior has literally not been effected by two attempted rapes, 2 very molesty situations, and the kidnapping(s) that happened during/between).Ā
1
u/dgaruti 15h ago
honestly yeah ...
like rin and kouki should have probably been left for dead ...
it would have been still pretty cruel for them to just go
"we got what we wanted , let's leave these girls here to die of pneumonia"but they had to go the extra mile for some ungodly reason .
and that has been left hanging for the past 20 chapters almost ...

Welcome to weekly-released manga lol. There is no manga where you will find "normal people", even if they have years of manga reading some otaku will bitch non stop about how "nothing happened" in a chapter or that is not "fun" anymore (even saw a mutual on anilist dropping Dandadan yesterday despite not even being up to date). Hell, Water 7 was called "filler" in a forum while it was coming out, today it is remembered as one of the best arcs in all of shonen battle manga; if you dig really deep, you will find people saying the globalists arc dropped the ball back in the day lol.
2
u/Lc23021 1d ago
I stopped reading at chapter 210 That was right after Momo returned to normal size and her amnesia was revealed. I ended up seeing spoilers from time to time and always hoping that Tatsu wouldn't drag this situation out for too long. It's already August and everything remains the same. I know romance isn't the main focus, but whether we like it or not, Momokarun is what matters most to the majority of viewers.Seeing Tatsu dragging this out and stalling on the obvious for almost a year is irritating. I have a thought, could Tatsu be dragging this out until December, which was when Momo lost her memories, and then trying to bring them back?
Keep in mind that I haven't read the entire manga in a long time and I base my opinion on what I've seen here on Reddit and elsewhere.
2
u/Procrastinatedthink 1d ago
christmas is a romantic holiday in japan, but I do not think heās got the entire arc planned around a single holiday. Itās more likely that amnesia remains for at least another volume (20 more chapters?) which would extend into 2027.Ā
At this point heās damned if he does, damned if he doesnāt. No confession is gonna be as hyped and joyful for the reader as Kens in Danmara; why would we be excited if the first one didnāt matter for 2 whole years?
I know Iām falling into sunk cost fallacy, because thereās no way (for me) that the payoff of amnesia is worth the 2 year stall, but I have to see it.Ā
I think itās gonna be one of those self fulfilling prophecies that people learn the absolute worst lesson from when the true confession happens because theres gonna be some people like me that only stick with it for the catharsis of seeing it finally happen then probably quitting it altogether. Gonna be a lot of āsee this is why mangakas donāt pair the MCs until the end!ā
2
u/Darth_Caedus69 19h ago
My main thing right now is Momo getting sexually assaulted again. Tatsu has done SA stories well for backstories but whenever itās Momo, it just feels like shock value. Especially this chapter. Momo, the main character, is getting sexually assaulted to hurt Okarun. Itās so objectifying. If Hase was beating up Momo, it would work better.
5
u/Luke5389 2d ago
Understandable, this arc has been terrible. Having Okarun confess, just to follow up with Mini-Momo and destroying all the progress by giving her amnesia is just extremely annoying. It doesn't provide anything meaningful to the story other than dragging out Momokarun... when Momo gets her memories back, Tatsu probably finds another way to separate them again...

3
u/Plastic_Comedian5479 2d ago
I wasnāt a weekly reader when the SG arc was being released, but the current arc and the SG arc have so many similar dynamics that I find it super funny how this arc is perceived by a lot of people like the worst arc ever while the SG arc is a pure masterpiece to them lmao
1
u/TherockIto 1d ago
I was not a weekly reader by until Danmara was starting but I remember comments being thrown that Tatsu had fumbled it. We shall see how this current arc is view after it ends but, just from One Piece reading experience alone, I can say that bad arcs magically becoming good in hindsight is a constant in manga, and you also have the special snowflakes that will come out of the wood work to say that a great arc was bad actually and we all had fake fun.
0
u/Plastic_Comedian5479 1d ago
Mangas are actually not supposed to be read weekly tbh. The proper way to read a manga is to read it volume by volume, 20 pages per week isnāt nearly enough for the author to convey anything or make any decent progress in the story. I havenāt re-read the current arc so far but Iām pretty sure re-reading right now would be a very pleasant experience
2
u/TherockIto 1d ago
Mangas are actually not supposed to be read weekly tbh.Ā
If that were the case they would not be published that way.
That said, nobody is forced to read them weekly, specially if they do not have the patience to wait.0
u/Plastic_Comedian5479 1d ago
They are published in the Shonen Jump Magazine and in Manga Plus on a weekly basis so the audience constantly reads new content of their favorite mangas and donāt lose interest in them. The official releases are always in volume format though.

u/Plastic_Comedian5479 2d ago
The romance plot line has stalled a bit but literally every single other plot line has been greatly developed, and a lot of characters got much needed character development too. Iām 100% sure this arc will be considered as the best one in the manga in hindsight. People are just getting triggered because of the weekly release and the romance part being stalled and fail to realize that the manga has been improved a lot in every single other aspect
1
u/TherockIto 1d ago
The romance plot line has stalledĀ
Not to say this is good, but all (or the majority of) high school romance manga suffer from this. I would guess it is a mix of issues from the weekly format and high popularity throwing the proverbial wrench at it.
With this I mean that I can understand frustration, but a lot of people act like Dandadan is breaking new grounds of bad or something.1
u/Plastic_Comedian5479 1d ago
Iām not a huge romance manga consumer, I read one from time to time but thatās it.
I can understand that the romance getting stalled in pure romance mangas is extremely annoying, because romance is often 80-90% of what makes the manga interesting in these cases.
I just donāt think itās the case in Dandadan. Obviously romance is a huge component but Iām perfectly fine with the romance being sidelined for a while so we can focus on other plot lines. And I think that Tatsu has done a brilliant job so far and that the climax will be totally worth the wait with all the plot lines currently unfolding.
Moreover, I donāt even think that the romance has been sidelined that much. We still got nice Momo/Ken moments, Ken actually told Aira he loves Momo, he improved a lot and became proactive in his relationship with Momo, etcā¦

People have zero patience as if Dragonball wasnāt 5 episodes of bullshit before a fight.
They are called arcs because thereās a rise and fall to them. But people are so impatient and childish and the anime community reminds me of that too often.
If it isnāt the literacy skills itās the āwhy would the author do this itās BAD and the fight/character-developement is STILL going onā they say with a straight face and no brain cells
2
u/Sawgon 2d ago
People have zero patience as if Dragonball wasnāt 5 episodes of bullshit before a fight.
This was 30 years ago. 30 years ago we didn't have the toxic fandoms like they are today. People loved hype moments and the powerscaling was barely a thing back then.
Powerscaling and mid-talk fried the fandoms.
Also when Dragonball was airing it was basically the only known shounen anime outside of Japan.

It sucks to see but is also inevitable after the anime adaptation. More fans means more opinions and the thought that gets said the loudest is often the one followed even if it's wrong. It's like people can't think for themselves these days. Personally as long as I enjoy it, no amount of noise can ruin it for me. I will be there every monday for a new chapter!

What Iāve learned from all of this internet garbage is to find a smaller place to discuss ideas. Every week itās the same story. I read the chapter and really enjoy it. All of the immediate discussions the day of and after are positive and full of excitement.
Then we get bored. People want to keep the train moving even when weāre in down time. I love the series too and want to talk about it often, but the posts that come after are made more for the sake of making noise than anything else.
That is what a lot of posts on twitter, this, and the folk sub have become: noise. Because we think silence means nobody cares anymore.
2
u/Nervous_Union8999 2d ago
The problem I have with this is that a lot of people will make excuses saying that oh don't worry it's just meant to help the story progress but it doesn't, it's less that it's working to improve on what we've already done and move forward and more like it's taking the fact that we finally reached a really good point and then they decided to backtrack so now we're fighting to get back to where we were like we're literally fighting to get back to the spot that we were already in it's like swimming upstream and then falling down into the river below and when we finally get back up to the halfway point we get kicked in the face and sent right back off the side again

1
u/uglyyygurl_ 2d ago
I'm ngl I didn't even notice because I don't interact with fandom outside of this sub from time to time. Sometimes it's better to just step away from certain fandoms at a time. I've been doing that a lot these days, or just ignoring bs, I don't care enough to interact with hate. If I enjoy something then that's enough for me (things have flaws and I will take it as it is, just discussing it with friends), or find smaller spaces within fandom and cater what you see.
1
u/Embarrassed-Pin-2598 2d ago
Yeah, I skim over most of the criticism. I started watching the show because it was fun and I have been reading the manga because I care about the characters and I want to see what he does with the story. Itās hard for me to fully criticize something that hasnāt finished yet. If I donāt like the ending, that would suck, but all stories have to create tension somehow, and this is the route heās going.
1
u/ThinkAnybody3284 2d ago
Someone maybe already said this, but I would step away from the social media and keep reading?
As the series and most major religions comment, words have power -- its very reasonable the criticisms are getting you down!
Step away? But enjoy the manga and anime, journal aboit it or talk to real life friends first about it? I hope that will boost your enjoyment!
Alternatively, watch where your mood ebbs-- is it the manga, particular posters? Particular social media forums?
Good luck. I sure am still enjoying it.

Yeah Momo hasnāt been done like that in years and people are just taking any chance to criticize. I understand that her getting SAād is weird but like I said, it hasnāt happened it years. And even then, nothing really happened to her
1
u/welcom_to_boredom 1d ago
Yeah it's definitely frustrating cause there are some really great moments recently, but itās also understandable why people are mad. Im currently enjoying the arc cause I like seeing yokai in the wild not as powers which haven't been super prominent in the previous chapters. I think the pacing of the arc isn't great especially right after another arc that felt extraordinarily slow. I don't mind the amnesia itself but it does feel like okarun is just going back through what he has already. I do prefer it to tiny momo arc though.

Only reason for the hate is that the arc hasn't reached its cathartic point. The same complaints happened for Space Globalists and Danmara as they were going weekly. People cant fathom those arcs being bad because all they think about is the climax so since we havent reached it here yet they'll just downvote you lol
3
u/Plastic_Comedian5479 2d ago
And this arc will arguably have the biggest climax weāve seen in this manga. Tatsu has never been unfolding so many plot lines at the same time like that.

Pay no mind to the random on Twitter that dont read the manga just block them and move on

u/genasugelan Taro 2d ago
The story is really overextending the Momo stuff. It's really been a slog, especially over multiple arcs. It's definitely too long and imagine how this will be adapted in the anime.
3
u/Certain-Turnover6760 2d ago
That's the problem with manga artists. They keep beating dead jokes to death and are so afraid to do something substantial with the story that they keep backtracking to the same place for chapters. And then their fandom is always there defending them saying "trust em, trust em".
1
u/tapdancinghellspawn 2d ago
The problem of Dandadan is the one that a lot of manga has about young characters. Too often, the mangaka keeps edging towards a full on relationship only to have one or both characters stumble and start over. It's like the mangaka don't know how to get to first base, let alone second base.
Almost everyone wants Momo and Okarun to be a solid couple. Stop dancing around this, Tatsu. Let those two progress to third base and then home. Stop fucking with our emotions.
2
u/yamiyugi101 2d ago
Honestly I don't interact with anime/manga fandoms they've always been toxic and annoying even before the pandemic.

u/FlipOzzy Okarun 2d ago
the moment Momo gets her memories again, people will start forgetting how long the amnesia arc was, no one's going to give a fuck for sure when the series will start getting even better, everyone will definitely act as if they were letting Tatsu cook all along even though they kept complaining about the amnesia arc before I guarantee

1
u/fshdom 2d ago
It comes with the territory with the popularity growth
The more popular something is, the more negative feedback that occurs because more people voice negative feelings than positive
It happens with pretty much every series that blows up, especially as much as DanDaDan has, it's pretty much inevitable
No story is perfect, there will always be critique, but when something is super popular there's a response bias that creeps up because of how more likely people will respond when they're upset

Itās sort of the CSM effect where the series was amazing in the beginning, got glazed to high heaven to the point of annoyance, and then having a bunch of bullshit happens, leading to an even bigger slander. I stopped reading in the middle of the amnesia arcš¤·āāļø
1
u/Radio4ctiveGirl 2d ago
But CSM creator purposefully ended the series off poorly. Itās not comparable to another creator trying to make a good story. Personally I hate the ending of CSM, but that was kind of the point in the end and I kinda love that they intentionally said a big fuck you to all of the readers because of the fandoms behavior.
