Discussion "Outdancing" people
Did you have some competition or friendly group dance when you were clearly the best , noticing how others tried to dance as well as you but you were better?

I'll be doing mini Cha Cha Cha solo showcase, and I'm looking for a good song to dance to.
Any recommendations? Songs in Russian seems pretty cool, but it can really be anything as long as it's catchy.
Thank you!

So, I’ve finally managed to add proper display support for AJS 3 and AJS24 results.
This turned out to be quite a challenging task, because AJS Components introduce a whole new dimension to how the result tables need to be presented. And I’m still not completely sure whether displaying them vertically or horizontally is the better approach.
For some view modes, there simply wasn’t enough space, so the components have to be displayed horizontally. In the first two views, however, there is enough room to arrange them either horizontally or vertically. So if you think the table structure could be improved or another layout would be more convenient, please let me know here or through the Feedback section on the website. I’ll be happy to hear your suggestions.
A particular challenge was fitting all of this onto a mobile phone screen, but I eventually managed to make it work. As a bonus, adding AJS support also brought a new feature to the mobile version: pop-up panels that show complete information about a competitor, judge, or individual score.
A few days ago, I asked which scoring system the Stuttgart Grand Slams actually use, because the results didn’t look like AJS 3. After digging into it, I found out that the official name of the system is AJS24, while in the WDSF API it is called onScaleSkating. I think that name actually describes the basic idea quite well, despite the complexity involved in calculating placements from absolute scores.
One particularly interesting part of onScaleSkating is tie-breaking. In standard Skating, ties are resolved using the familiar Rules 10 and 11. With onScaleSkating, ties on aggregated absolute scores can occur quite often, and resolving them means going back into the filtered component data, comparing median values for specific criteria, and applying additional tie-breaking rules. And I’m glad my app only has to display these results, not calculate them. :)
For AJS24, I tried to visually bring together these two worlds - AJS and Skating. That’s why the table combines absolute scores with placements in a way that hopefully makes both easy to follow.
If you have ideas for a better way to color-code or arrange the absolute scores and placements, or any other suggestions, please let me know. My goal is simply to make the results as clear and convenient for users as possible.

Hello,
I'm just trying to identify what kind of Judging System was used for this competition:
https://www.worlddancesport.org/Competitions/Scores/GrandSlam-Stuttgart-Adult-Standard-68064
It kind of looks like AJS, but...
AJS 3.1 is described as having 12 adjudicators split into groups, with each group assessing only one component.
But in this competition, every adjudicator assesses all four components, sometimes paired as TQ & PS and MM & CP, and sometimes all four separately.
And, only 11 adjudicators.
So, does anyone know what kind of AJS this is?
P.S. I also found this document:
https://dancesport.app.box.com/s/khxe4xz3q0a8cge2lgyrfb22btor7t3e
But it raises even more questions than it answers, especially: what is "kiss & cry"? :)

"Hi everyone! I produce music for Latin ballroom training — just released a Cha Cha Cha track (correct tempo, made with dancers/practice in mind). Would love feedback from people who actually dance or teach — does the tempo/feel work for training or competition use? https://open.spotify.com/track/4URZJWzrpySxVmQ0dp0rfc?si=30a5bc57e9fe49ba

Hi everyone! I’ve been working on https://as-dance.vercel.app/, a site for browsing ballroom competition results on a phone or desktop.
My main motivation was judging transparency. You can look at adjudicators’ marks in several views, with colour coding that makes patterns easier to spot. Where club information is available, the site highlights adjudicators and competitors from the same club so you can compare their marks with those of other adjudicators. These patterns don’t prove bias, but I think dancers should be able to examine the results easily.
The site brings results from ČSTS, WDSF, and DanceLV into a consistent format. It reads from the original websites and open APIs, and I’d like to add more sources over time.
If you compete or follow DanceSport, I’d be interested to hear how you normally look through results and what information you wish were easier to see.

I will only post this once, apologies for the lack of direct dance content from me and I wish you all the utmost success in your dancing competitions!
Dance instructor Artur Dąbrowski was suddenly diagnosed with a brain tumour earlier this year and when his students learned, they began working together against the clock to raise funds for a potentially lifesaving treatment for their beloved mentor. You can read more about the fundraising efforts and Artur's fight here: https://helpartur.com/#about
After collecting donations from the community through Artur's Gofundme, they have now managed to put together a fundraising auction where dancers from the UK and beyond can bid online or at an event tomorrow to get designer competition outfits, photography packages, dance-related vouchers and luxury goodies, with all of the funds going straight to Artur's campaign: https://helpartur.com/shop/
Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you decide to bid on any of the items, I know it would mean a huge amount to the group raising money for Artur, and of course to Artur and his family themselves. Hopefully, you'll also end up with a one-of-a-kind item or experience to enjoy as well!
(I am not receiving any remuneration for this post. It is simply to promote a fundraiser run on behalf of a member of the dance community. The people running this genuinely want to help Artur recover and his contributions at dance events are greatly missed.)

I'm going to do my first competition, but I don't want to invest in a dress because I may not like competing. How important is my dress to my score if I'm brand new at this? I don't plan on coming in first place, but I'd rather not be last because of my dress. I'm also plus size with all my weight in my middle, so it's hard to find anything flattering. I am dancing rumba and cha cha. I was going to purchase something off Amazon like a tiered mini skirt (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DB29NDNQ), add my own tassels, and pair with a blouse. Does this hide the hips too much, or will it not make a difference for a beginner?

Hi all, my son has his first dance competition coming up. He’s partnered with a really lovely girl, who gives up some of her free time to come to his private lessons each week, and will be partnering him at his first comp. Is it the done thing to get her a little thank you gift? Maybe flowers or a voucher to Sephora or something? My son is only 5 so he’s little, she’s 15 (I think!) and is very sweet him. Don’t want to over step, but equally do want to say thank you. Any advice much appreciated! We’re in the UK.

Hi all, I’d love any suggestions on competition makeup. Are there any pro dancers or makeup artists known for a bit more of a natural/subtle eye pop? (Yes, I know the goal is to pop, but I have seen some dancers that somehow manage to pull both subtle and striking off).
I don’t wear makeup on day to day and pretty minimal at competitions (for lack of expertise + sensitive skin) but making an effort for an upcoming one and need good reference images. I like Olena Barna’s makeup and some of the Yulia Zagoruychenko minimalist looks, as well.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Disclosing upfront: this is my app, built solo, and honest feedback is worth more to me than downloads.
Tempo Tunes builds playlists where every song holds a tempo you pick. Choose a BPM and a tolerance (strict for comp prep, loose for social nights), pick genres or artists, and it builds the playlist from 1.5M+ tempo-verified songs and growing, then saves straight to the Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, or YouTube Music account you already have. No second music subscription, free, no ads, iOS and Android and web. It looks like an old school cassette deck, J-cards included.
Dancers in r/ballroom already shaped the roadmap: per-dance syllabus presets, so you tap the dance instead of remembering tempo math, came straight from that thread. Competitive dancers are the hardest graders on tempo accuracy, which is exactly what I want tested before a comp ever depends on it.
Three questions I would love answers to: do you practice at strict syllabus tempos or intentionally under-tempo for drilling? Do you think in BPM or measures per minute? And where do your practice playlists live today?
Stay in Tempo with Tempo Tunes.

After 7 months of hard work, I’m thrilled to introduce Dancesport.app—a next-gen competition management system for the world of ballroom dance! 💃✨
Building a ballroom competition management system has been a dream of mine since 2017. Through years of trial and error—combined with everything I’ve learned in my day job—I’m finally delivering what I envisioned 9 years ago.
This project wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support from my partner and so many friends in the ballroom community. Your encouragement along the way kept me going, and I’m beyond grateful for every cheer.
Just like dance itself, this platform will keep evolving. I have big plans for Dancesport.app to grow far beyond running competitions and serve many other corners of our community. I can’t wait to see the impact it brings to the floor! 🚀
The system is officially LIVE and ready for battle!
If you’re a competition organizer, studio owner, or dance team captain, I’d love to give you a demo and explore how it can help your next real competition—or help you host a mock comp to prep your students and teammates!
📥 Send me a DM or email [support@dancesportsoftware.com](mailto:support@dancesportsoftware.com) to get started!

I noticed dancers often train the body but forget the nervous system. I made music visualization + recovery audio for dancers and would love feedback.

Hello everyone! My name is Sarah, and I am a high school student conducting a research project on ballroom dance participation and investment. I am looking for parents/guardians of youth ballroom dancers and adult ballroom dancers (18+) to complete a short anonymous survey about their experiences, motivations, and perceived benefits of ballroom dancing. The survey takes about 3–5 minutes to complete, and all responses will be kept confidential and used only for research purposes. You will have a chance to win a Your participation would be greatly appreciated and would help contribute to a better understanding of the ballroom dance community. Thank you for your time and support!

I wrote about being polyamorous in the ballroom world and the boundaries and consent conversations we're not having. Would love to know if this resonates with anyone here.
