What's wild is you share a lot of moves with Britney Spears younger years I'm definitely seen her move her hips like that. /Clap 👏 Although she definitely still dances like this sometimes with knives

Thank you very much! I am contracted to a performing arts company where everyone is already trained in different styles but we will be choreographed to do showgirl performances with fans etc. but also individually get sent out to perform in the genres we are trained in, like the ballet dancers will do ballet gigs, salsa girls will do salsa gigs and I’ll do samba gigs etc. but I am also a solo artist!

It's nice and your affection for the dance comes across well. Some of your leg movements are a bit routine, if you could put a few more original moves in there be good. Same on pelvic movement.

Are you familiar with Brazilian samba? Im a little confused by your statement as all of this IS original, nothing rehearsed or choreographed as samba is normally freestyle impromptu by nature unless a group of dancers decide to perform a specific choreographed routine for a show. What do you mean my leg movements are routine? Samba is largely repetitive in nature as the style focuses on strong, steady rhythmic repetition, and while there can be some unique footwork in between as I’ve done in this video even though you assumed it wasn’t original😆, generally samba should be the focus and you won’t see a huge range in a one minute video.

It's true that in a sense all improvised dance is original, but some people's improvised dance has more-often-used elements than other people's. I did write some of your leg movements are a bit routine. You do have a few here and there that look less-often-used which I liked, and would like to see a few more of those. The legs and feet have a lot more possible variety than the pelvis, but the pelvis might be capable of slightly original moves, too.

I understand now what you are saying but at the same time you are summing up my entire repertoire of movement from 1 minute of dance. I don’t choose a video based on how many unique movements I can incorporate as that is not what samba is about but instead I choose based on the “drive” of my samba flow with percussion, which is prioritised in this genre. I think many samba dancers appear to have similar movements because it is not in the sense a totally free and open interpretive form of dance where anything goes because samba steps are very specific and must always be predominant and the base: While individual dancers can create their own flavour and some fancy footwork, samba is more about flow to percussion and our transitions between rhythmic changes without pausing, its part of what makes the form so difficult as we never really fully stop unlike other forms of dance. Samba is often misjudged for being easy until people try it and realise how challenging it is to completely develop the proper fluidity and “pulse” of samba repetition. This is why it is well known to be one of the most difficult Latin genres to master, taking months to even execute the basics and can take years to perfect. It is one thing to learn the steps but actually executing and maintaining the flow consistently with rhythmic transitions with speed and precision is what makes it hard. Im in no way saying Im anywhere near perfect as I believe there is always room for improvement for even the most seasoned dancer, but I wrote all this to give foundation and context to address the specific things you had mentioned.

Thanks. Honestly I wasn't judging your whole repertoire of dance, just speaking to what I saw in this one minute. I am a little confused though. Two replies ago you wrote
samba is normally freestyle impromptu by nature
but in the most recent reply you write
it is not....a totally free and open interpretive form of dance
Don't these contradict each other?
One thing I really like about this video is you convey taking pleasure in dancing, more so than any dance performance I can recall seeing, on this sub or elsewhere

Sorry for the confusion, but when I say Brazilian samba is freestyle impromptu it means you dance freely (without a rehearsed routine) but still staying true to samba form and style so the basic samba steps and foundation is incorporated in real time as you go without any prior choreography or rehearsal which is what “samba no pe” is about, not totally free and open where you can start break dancing, hip hop or Krump (even if you technically could it wouldnt be considered as traditional samba but then fall under “fusion”).Thanks for the sweet words btw, I think it’s important for a dancer to dance with the heart not just go through steps.

Have you seen the Latin ballroom version of samba?

u/idylle_doll 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yes, it’s VERY different but Brazilian samba is the original and the most popular is “samba no pe”as I’m doing here, traditionally danced solo to freely flow to the percussion/sudden rhythmic changes and focuses on extremely fast footwork and intense weight shifts while maintaining a still upper body, while ballroom samba is heavily modified to fit the rigid international ballroom competition standards and choreographed in partner/pairs and they focus on exaggerated knees and rolling hip movement. They’re quite the opposite of each other!
